Siddaramaiah orders probe into tiger deaths, 2 detained
Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the death of a tigress and her four cubs in Chamarajanagar district's Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. Two individuals have been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah said necessary orders had already been issued and promised strict action based on the outcome of the inquiry. "The investigation is underway. Once the report is submitted, we will take appropriate action," the Chief Minister assured.
The deaths, believed to be a case of poisoning, came to light yesterday after forest officials found the carcasses in the Meenyam forest area under the Hoogyam range of the sanctuary.
Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre termed the deaths "deeply saddening," and said the government was taking the matter seriously. "A team led by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) has been constituted and directed to submit a report within three days," he informed.
Preliminary findings suggest the tigress had killed a cow left to graze in the forest and dragged it into the woods. She and her cubs reportedly fed on the carcass over the next few days, which officials suspect was laced with poison by local villagers. "The post-mortem has been completed, and viscera samples have been sent to the laboratory for confirmation," Khandre said.
The minister further stated that the tiger conservation effort is a joint responsibility of both the Centre and the state. "The Central government must release funds for the Tiger Project as per expectations. This is not a political issue — we must work in coordination to protect our wildlife," he said, adding that he had discussed the issue in detail with CM Siddaramaiah.
A joint forest-police team has launched a search for the owner of the cow believed to have triggered the chain of events. "We are treating this incident with utmost seriousness. There will be complete transparency in the investigation," Khandre said.
Initial reports mentioned the deaths of the tigress and three cubs, but authorities later confirmed that all four cubs had perished along with their mother, all victims of suspected poisoning. UNI BDN SSP

Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah tells senior police officers that he was informed of only one death when 11 had occurred
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Friday claimed that the police informed him about only one stampede death on the evening of June 4, although 11 people had lost their lives in the crush that occurred when fans of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cricket team gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium to celebrate the franchise's victory in the Indian Premier League. 'The deaths occurred from 3.50 pm on the day of the stampede. However, the correct information was not given. Isn't this wrong? Even when I asked at 5.45 pm, they informed me that there was only one death. By then, 11 deaths had already occurred,' Siddaramaiah said at an annual meeting of senior police officers in Bengaluru. The Karnataka CM made the statement by way of a justification for the suspension of five police officers – including the former Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, and two IPS officers of the rank of inspector general of police and superintendent of police. 'If the senior officers had given us the correct information immediately, the stadium program could have been cancelled,' Siddaramaiah said while referring to the events held on June 4 to felicitate the RCB team – first at the Vidhana Soudha and later at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. 'I have been an MLA since 1983 and a CM on two occasions. I have never seen such a stampede in Bengaluru before. Why is there an intelligence department? They did not provide proper and comprehensive information. As a result, 11 people died,' he said. The stadium stampede also resulted in the transfer of the state intelligence chief. 'I am also saddened that senior officials had to be suspended. But is it not true that there was a mistake?' the Karnataka chief minister said in a poser to the senior police officials. The investigation into the stampede deaths has revealed that the first death was recorded at 3.45 pm. The probe has also revealed that 10 more deaths were recorded at three hospitals in central Bengaluru from 4.15 pm to 5.15 pm, even as the felicitation and celebration of the RCB cricket team were on at the two separate events. The Opposition parties in Karnataka have accused the Congress government of going on with the victory celebrations despite deaths of fans being registered at hospitals ahead of the first event and through the course of the first and second events. The government order suspending the five police officers had stated that the 'situation was not discussed with the higher-ups for taking necessary guidance and advice in the matter. As a result, the situation went out of control and brought a lot of misery, loss of precious life, and embarrassment to the government.' At the meeting with senior police officers on Friday, the Karnataka CM also called for better quality investigations of cases in the state by the police. 'The failure to file chargesheets in criminal cases effectively and on time is also a major failure. Such a thing cannot be tolerated,' he said. On the issue of communal polarisation in the coastal districts of Karnataka being used as a political strategy by different radical groups, the Karnataka CM called for the police to take action against those who make hate speeches. 'If you do not take action, then we should take action against you,' he said.

HC orders framing of charges against advocate and ex-BJP minister in contempt case
Shimla, June 27 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh High Court has rejected the apology tendered by counsel Dhairya Sushant and his father, former BJP minister Rajan Sushant, for allegedly making scandalous allegations against sitting judges on social media. The court has directed that charges be framed against both on July 16 in a suo motu contempt petition. The division bench of Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and Justice Sushil Kukreja ruled yesterday that the apology submitted by the respondents lacked sincerity, repentance, or remorse, and appeared to be a tactical move to escape legal consequences. The case arose from a video posted by Dhairya Sushant on Facebook earlier this year, in which he accused a sitting High Court judge of favoritism and being part of a nexus involving drug dealers, lawyers, and judicial officers. In the video, he claimed that justice was being delivered on the basis of face value and that the court had failed to act against criminals despite strong evidence. The court found that both the advocate and his father, Rajan Sushant, had prima facie committed criminal contempt by tarnishing the image of the judiciary and undermining public confidence in the justice system. Rejecting their last-minute apology submitted through counsel, the bench observed: 'We are convinced that it is a device adopted by the respondents to escape the rigours of the law… There has been no genuine remorse or repentance.' The High Court said that the apology was nothing more than a 'paper apology' and said it could not be accepted without compromising the dignity of the judiciary. The matter will now be taken up on July 16 for framing of charges. UNI ML PRS
