10-year old rape victim dies in India due to alleged hospital delay

Express Tribune2 days ago

The death of a 10-year-old rape victim in Bihar has triggered national outrage in India, with allegations of medical negligence intensifying political and public scrutiny ahead of upcoming state elections.
The girl, from the marginalised Dalit community, died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning.
Her uncle alleged she was forced to wait inside an ambulance for nearly four hours on Saturday before being admitted—claims denied by hospital authorities.
Officials at PMCH, Bihar's oldest government medical institution, described the allegations as 'baseless,' stating the child was brought in on an Advanced Life Support ambulance and appropriately referred between departments due to the nature of her injuries.
The girl had initially been taken to a local hospital after being found with knife wounds near her aunt's home in Muzaffarpur, where she was allegedly raped on 26 May by a local man, now under arrest.
She was later referred to Patna for reconstructive surgery on her windpipe.
A viral video showing Congress leaders confronting hospital staff over the girl's admission fuelled public anger. Rahul Gandhi labelled the incident 'extremely shameful' and called for accountability.

The National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women have both sought reports on the hospital's role.
Hospital officials said the girl was initially placed in the paediatrics department but transferred to gynaecology due to a lack of intensive care facilities in ENT, where her injuries would have been treated.
Opposition parties, including Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), have condemned the incident and staged multiple protests.
The episode has once again brought Bihar's fragile healthcare infrastructure under scrutiny. In May, an incident involving a rat biting a patient in another Patna hospital also drew widespread criticism and led to an investigation.
Under Indian law, rape victims cannot be named.

RAW funding ‘Fitna-e-Hindustan' to destabilise Pakistan: CM Balochistan

Listen to article Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfaraz Bugti has stated that India's intelligence agency, Reasearch and Analysis Wing (RAW), is sponsoring the terrorist group 'Fitna-e-Hindustan' to destabilise Pakistan. Addressing a key press conference in the provincial capital alongside Provincial Minister for Planning and Development Zahoor Ahmed Buledi and Chief Secretary Balochistan, the Chief Minister said that India's intelligence agency RAW is actively supporting terrorist groups to destabilise peace in Pakistan, especially in Balochistan. He added that the group was 'purely terrorist' and has no connection to the Baloch people or the province of Balochistan. During the press conference, misleading reports by Indian media were also shown, including false claims about Karachi Port amid recent tensions between Pakistan and India. Audio recordings of Fitna-tul-Hindustan operatives Shanbay and Rehman Gul were also played for journalists, in which they could be heard exchanging information with their RAW handlers. 'These terrorists are not representatives of the Baloch people; they are merely tools of RAW.' 'India cannot tolerate Pakistan's growing economy and aims to harm us through proxy warfare,' he said. The CM dismissed reports of enforced disappearances as propaganda, citing higher numbers of voluntary disappearances recorded by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). He stressed that the Baloch nation has its own proud traditions and does not endorse such cowardly acts. 'They are not killing Punjabis—they are killing Pakistanis,' he added. He stated there is no need for a major military operation in Balochistan, as the state's policy relies on political dialogue and effective strategy. 'Political negotiations are ongoing, but those who raise arms against the state will face action.' The Chief Minister concluded by saying that the state will thwart every attack by Fitna-tul-Hindustan and will not allow any conspiracy against Pakistan's peace and development to succeed.

Bangladesh says India pushes back 1,200 people

PHOTO:REUTERS Bangladesh said on Wednesday that neighbouring India has pushed more than 1,270 people across its border in the past month, mainly Bangladeshis, but also Indian citizens and Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh, largely encircled by land by India, has seen relations with New Delhi turn icy since a mass uprising toppled Dhaka's previous government last year. "Between May 7 and June 3, Indian authorities pushed in 1,272 individuals, including a few Indian citizens and Rohingya, through 19 bordering districts", Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials said. "Only yesterday, they pushed 50 individuals." India's Hindu nationalist government has often described undocumented immigrants as "Muslim infiltrators", accusing them of posing a security threat. India has not commented on the recent returns across their shared border. Bangladeshi Jahidul Molla, 21, said he was among those sent back, saying he had been living in India's western state of Gujarat since he was 14.

11 killed at IPL champs' celebrations

At least 11 people died on Wednesday in a crowd surge outside a cricket stadium in the Indian city of Bengaluru where fans were celebrating Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League (IPL) title win, authorities said. Thousands of people, some waving the home team's red flag, lined streets around the Chinnaswamy Stadium as the team arrived in a bus in the evening, TV channels showed, with some climbing trees and the stadium wall for a better view. As the celebration proceeded, some people outside without passes tried to push through gates and there was further trouble between the perimeter and main arena, police said. Images from the scene showed people climbing over others. At least 11 people were killed and 47 were injured in the incident, Karnataka state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters. "At a time of celebration, this unfortunate event should not have happened. We are saddened by this. The fans that showed up were beyond our expectations," he said.
