Around 2 a.m., police were sent to the area of Blues Alley and 12th Street for a person lying down on the roadway.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the person had been shot at least once. According to police, the victim died at the scene.
The victim has not yet been identified, but police said he was a man.
Sacramento police said they don't have any information about the shooter.

Police told members of the media gathered outside the home late Monday night that the murder suspect appeared to have been known to the couple — though authorities have not described the nature of their relationship. 'The message here is that it appears to be a targeted attack,' local homicide detective Dean Thomas said, according to The Age. 'Our suspect is known to the address.' The news outlets reported that a range of graffiti was found sprayed on the outside walls of the home, some of which were captured by overhead news cameras. 'Karma is not a menu' read one message. 'Meat is murder,' read another. Another spray painted message said, 'Enough is Enough,' while another reportedly read ''betrayal, unpredictable, inevitable,' according to 'Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation,' a police spokesperson told the outlet. Georgopoulos' aunt Petty Dilveridis was reportedly spotted at the crime scene distraught and trying to get past police tape into her niece's home, according to the outlets. She was later seen crying and sitting on a curb outside. Dilveridis told The Herald Sun that Athena was excited about being pregnant and never thought she'd become a mother due to her age. Man ran down road 'covered in blood and screaming for help'
A man was seen running down a quiet residential road covered in blood and screaming for help, a neighbour said. Merseyside Police officers were called to Sandbrook Way in Ainsdale following reports of a man suffering a small puncture wound to his shoulder at 1.35am on Tuesday, August 12. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Following inquiries, a 41-year-old man of no fixed abode and a 54-year-old woman from Ainsdale have both been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent. The man was also arrested for criminal damage. They both remain in custody. When the ECHO arrived at the scene on Tuesday afternoon, three houses remained cordoned off, one on Pinfold Lane where the incident is believed to have taken place close to Sandbrook Way, one on Bowness Avenue and another on Windermere Crescent. Blood remained on the property on Bowness Avenue. One neighbour, who was awake at the time of the incident and lives on Bowness Avenue, told the ECHO: "I was awake and it was dead quiet then I just heard a load of noise coming from the end of the road. "I looked out the window and saw a man topless and covered in blood screaming for help. He saw the window was open and knocked on the door before going next door and going to the house across the road." She said the incident took place around 1.30am before emergency services descended on the quiet estate. Another neighbour said: "He woke us up and then next thing we knew police were on the street. They have been here all day and had the dogs out earlier." One other man said: "At around 2am we saw there was a lot of police activity. The police just descended on the road and there was an ambulance at the scene too. "The police are still here now. There was blood on a property on Pinfold Lane." Man thrown from vehicle in crash involving commuter train in Metro Vancouver
The West Coast Express commuter rail service in Metro Vancouver was disrupted when a train collided with a pickup truck in Port Moody, B.C.
