Italian orienteering athlete dies after collapsing at World Games in China

Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis has died after collapsing at the World Games in China.
Debertolis, 29, was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious during the men's middle-distance competition in Chengdu last Friday.
"Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away on 12 August 2025," a joint statement from the International World Games Association, the local organising committee (LOC) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) said.
The Italian was one of 12 athletes listed as "Did Not Finish" in the official results.
Orienteering is an outdoor navigation sport where participants use a map and compass to find their way across unfamiliar terrain while racing against the clock. The sport can be highly technical and physically demanding at the elite level.
"The World Games Family, the LOC and the IOF are struck by this tragedy and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the athlete and the whole Orienteering Community,' the statement adds.
The statement did not clarify the cause of death and provided no details as to why Debertolis had collapsed. The IOF said Debertolis had competed in several world championships and world cup events.
"Mattia was not only an elite athlete, but also a highly skilled civil engineer, with studies in progress for a PhD at the university in Stockholm, where he lived and was part of the orienteering club IFK Lidingo,' the federation added in a statement.
The central Chinese city of Chengdu is hosting the 12th edition of the multi-sport World Games, an event featuring fringe sports and disciplines not contested at the Olympics.

Nationals DFA 1B Nathaniel Lowe, activate OF Dylan Crews from IL

August 14 - The Washington Nationals designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment on Thursday in the midst of his disappointing season. The move was made as Washington activated outfielder Dylan Crews (left oblique strain) from the 60-day injured list. Crews is batting second and playing right field in Thursday night's home game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Lowe was batting just .216 but was second on the Nationals with 68 RBIs and tied for second with 16 homers. He has struck out 130 times. Lowe was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the offseason for left-hander Robert Garcia. The 30-year-old Lowe spent four seasons (2021-24) with the Rangers and was a key player on their 2023 World Series championship team. He was a Silver Slugger winner in 2022 when he established career bests of 27 homers and a .302 batting average. Lowe also played two seasons (2019-20) for the Tampa Bay Rays. He has a .263 average with 105 homers and 397 RBIs in 805 career games. Crews is batting .196 with seven homers, 15 RBIs and 11 steals in 45 games. He last played for the Nationals on May 20. Crews, 23, was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft. He is batting .206 with 10 homers, 23 RBIs and 23 steals in 76 major league games. --Field Level Media

Louis Rees-Zammit declares return to rugby with maverick English side Bristol as 'the obvious choice'

Louis Rees-Zammit declared Bristol 'the obvious choice' and said the ambitious Bears were perfect for him on and off the field as he confirmed his rugby return. After 18 months in the NFL with Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, Rees-Zammit is now back in the sport in which he made his name. On Thursday night, Bristol confirmed the signing of the Wales wing – one forecast by Daily Mail Sport on Wednesday – ahead of the new Prem Rugby season. The 24-year-old has signed a one-year contract at Ashton Gate with immediate effect and is then set to join rugby's rebel league R360 for its slated start date of September 2026. 'Bristol was the obvious choice for me,' Rees-Zammit said. 'The style of rugby the team play – all about entertaining the fans and growing the game – perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field. 'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments, and help people fall in the love with the game. 'I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. 'I'm looking forward to working with my team-mates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears.' Prior to his shock USA switch in January last year, Rees-Zammit had played all his club rugby with Bristol's West Country rivals Gloucester. Although he hasn't played the 15-man game professionally for 18 months, his arrival is a significant one for the ambitious Bears who have a track record of innovation. Their signing of Rees-Zammit fits both parties to a tee. The player can make the short commute from his home city of Cardiff and bed back into rugby with a team that will suit his style of play down to the ground. From Bristol's perspective, they get a fine player hungry to prove his worth after a short sabbatical. Rees-Zammit will also add to Bristol's commercial appeal, particularly for their game with Harlequins which will take place in Cardiff later this upcoming season. 'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments, and help people fall in the love with the game,' he said Rees-Zammit is no vanity deal, however. He is a proven try machine with 14 in 32 Tests for Wales and 42 in 77 games for Gloucester. Rees-Zammit's Bristol move will also help him to be in top form for his slated Wales return which will come in their November Tests. Bristol director of rugby Lam said: 'Louis is a world-class player and we're thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season. 'Although we have a small squad, we've been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the Prem and in Europe. 'Louis offers exactly that to our dynamic back three, with his ability and desire to play both full-back and wing for the Bears. 'He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club.'

Bristol sign Wales' Rees-Zammit on rugby union return

Bristol Bears have signed Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit for the 2025-26 Prem Rugby season as he returns to the sport following 18 months in the 24-year-old left rugby union in January 2024 to pursue a career in American football and was on the training squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not play in a regular-season capped 32 times by Wales, spent six years at Bristol's local rivals Gloucester before being released from his contract to join the NFL's International Player Pathway.
