Liquid star Eamon Downes has died: Tributes pour in as rave pioneer behind club anthem Sweet Harmony loses five year cancer battle

Daily Mail6 days ago
Rave pioneer Eamon Downes has died following a five year battle with cancer, his family confirmed on Tuesday.
The talented producer, who was also known as Ame, enjoyed enormous success as one half of pioneering dance act Liquid in the early 1990s.
Signed to XL Recordings - the label responsible for launching The Prodigy - Downes and band-mate Shane Heneghan, best known as DJ Model, scored one of the biggest hits of the era with Sweet Harmony.
Originally released independently in 1991, the iconic track sampled heavily from the CeCe Rogers' 1987 single Someday - notably its euphoric piano motif.
Confirming his death on social media, fellow DJ Billy Daniel Bunter wrote: 'It's with heartbreaking sadness that I'm letting the world know we've lost Eamon Downes, devoted husband to Stella, proud dad to Bea, and one of my closest friends ever. This one really hurts.
'I still remember him playing me 'Sweet Harmony' down the phone before it got cut. When XL signed it, he was buzzing. Sending dubplates by bike to Pete Tong and then straight to me at Labrynth, he loved that side of things.'

Woman left mortified as she's forced to get off Alton Towers rollercoaster after failing to get the safety bar over her 'big bust'

A woman has claimed that she was unable to ride on a popular rollercoaster at Alton Towers because she is 'big busted'. UK-based Nya visited the theme park in Staffordshire earlier this month but said the seat sizes quickly 'humbled' her. Taking to TikTok, she explained that the first ride she queued up for was Nemesis, a rollercoaster that travels at high speeds. However, when she got to her seat, after queuing for over an hour, she found that the bar wouldn't go over her breasts. She said, 'Guys, the embarrassment that I've just felt sitting on Nemesis and not being able to get on because I'm big. 'If you want to go on Nemesis and you've got breasts, if you're big busted, don't even think about it. 'I sat in, but it would not go over my boobs, like he was pushing, he was pushing, I said, 'It's not going to go over my t***'. So, the first ride, I didn't go on, and I waited. 'I was in that queue for an hour and half, can you imagine, but anyway,' she concluded. MailOnline has contacted Alton Towers for comment. Nya isn't the only one, and others took to the comment section to share similar experiences. One wrote, 'I've lost 12 stone and still refuse to go on the specific fair ride that this happened to me on.' A second added, 'They need to put a test seat at the front before people get in the queue, to avoid waiting in the line unknowingly of what the situation might be. 'I remember something similar happened to my friend when we went on a college trip too.' 'I went Alton Towers last year after years and knew there would be rides I wouldn't get on, [I] was gutted but it is what it is,' said another. A fourth added, 'Oh girlie, nothing humbles you more than the staff at Alton towers! They did the same to me!' It comes after a woman revealed her outrage at being told to 'cover up' after she visited her local Wetherspoons pub in gym wear. Georgia Toomey went to meet her boyfriend at The Tollemache Inn in Grantham, Lincolnshire, after finishing a workout at the gym. However, the 23-year-old said she was 'looked up and down' by a female staff member and told to zip up her top to conceal her blue sports bra because it was 'a family friendly pub.' The cleaner said she and her partner then went to the beer garden planning to order from the app - but left after they claimed the same worker kept coming outside to look at them. Georgia, who was wearing Gymshark cycling shorts and a matching sports bra, which cost £38 each, said, 'We walked in and I was wearing a gym set, I thought, 'We're only going to Spoons, I don't have to change'.' 'But this woman looked me up and down and said I had to zip my top up. She said it was a family-friendly pub. 'I think it's ridiculous. It's only sports wear and you shouldn't feel like you can't wear it. 'I can wear it in the gym, so why can't I wear it in Wetherspoons? She just wanted me to do it up, which I think is stupid. 'If it was somewhere in London, I would get it - but it's not, it's Spoons in Grantham,' she added. Viewers took to the comment section to share their thoughts on Nya's experience - and revealed that she wasn't alone 'You should be able to wear what you want and shouldn't be sexualised in gym wear. 'I would get it if it was a lacy bra or something, but it's not. She looked me up and down like a piece of dirt. It makes me feel like I should be covering up, but I shouldn't be. 'It's not like I'm big-chested, either - I was showing a bit of cleavage, but that's it. I'm sure girls have worn much more revealing stuff in there. She added: 'It's other people's problem if they are getting affected by a bit of cleavage.' After being told to cover up, Georgia said she and her boyfriend went out to the beer garden, where nobody else was sitting. However, they eventually opted to leave the pub after growing frustrated when, they say, the staff member kept coming out to 'check she was covered up.' Georgia complained to the pub but said they 'lied' by telling her she had been 'refused service and asked to leave', which she claimed did not happen. She added, 'We were sat outside and were going to order on the app, but the woman from the bar, who was about 40 or 50, kept coming outside and looking. 'It made me feel really embarrassed and insecure. We didn't feel comfortable, so we left. But the woman wrote and said she threw us out and wasn't going to serve us, which never happened. 'When I looked online it said you're allowed sports wear.' Georgia took to social media to share her experience and said a man replied saying he and his friends had been in the same pub topless with no issues before. In an email reply to her, the pub chain said, 'Most of our pubs are family environments, so we ask our customers to dress appropriately and in a way which would not cause offence. 'All customers must be fully clothed throughout their visit. The company does not permit the removal of shirts or footwear. 'In addition, some pubs operate specific dress codes at all or certain times. I appreciate that you were not satisfied by the way in which the incident was handled. 'Having discussed your feedback with the pub's manager, I understand that you were refused service and were asked to leave.' However in a statement, the pub backtracked and agreed that Georgia had not been asked to leave and she was 'very welcome to return'. Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said, 'It's always a matter of fine judgement for pub managers where sportswear is concerned. 'In this case, the customer was asked if she would mind zipping up her gym top, to which she kindly agreed. She was not asked to leave and is very welcome to return to the pub in the future.'

Tessa Thompson snuggles up to new boyfriend Brandon Green as they hold hands on romantic holiday in Portofino

Tessa Thompson and her new boyfriend Brandon Green looked smitten as they enjoyed a stroll on their romantic holiday in Portofino, Italy. The Creed actress, 41, looked chic in a cream sundress as she held hands with The Alchemy of Money CEO, 31. The Thor: Ragnarok star added elegant black shades to accessorise and wore chic red open-toe heels for her outing. The couple - who enjoyed a double date with LeBron James and wife Savannah in St Tropez last week - couldn't keep their hands off one another as they cherished every bit of the dolce vita. Soaking up the sun in the Italian Riviera coastline, Tessa looked on cloud nine beaming next to her partner, who previously dated Harry Potter star Emma Watson. Tessa and the son of controversial tycoon Sir Philip Green were first linked in March 2024 and have been spotted together countless times since, with reports suggesting that they are officially an item. While Tessa famously keeps tight-lipped on her romantic endeavours, she has been linked to Brandon for more than a year. They were first spotted looking cosy at a Lakers game in March 2024 as they appeared happy in each other's company while sitting courtside. Between watching baskets, Tessa and Brandon seemed to have eyes for each other as they beamed at one another. Since then, they have been seen together on a number of occasions, most recently at BST Hyde Park to watch Stevie Wonder. Over the years, Tessa - who identifies as bisexual - has been linked to several high-profile people, including Janelle Monae. In 2015, she was believed to have started dating Janelle after starring as a backup dancer in their Yoga video, according to PopSugar. The pair were also seen together at the 2015 MOCA gala, and three years later Tessa was featured in Janelle's music video for Dirty Computer. Meanwhile, Brandon has previously dated a number of models. He was once caught patting Kate Moss' bottom on holiday in St Barts. However, it looked like he was set to settle down with outspoken actress and activist Emma, when they started dating in 2021. The couple dated for 18 months until it seems that Emma had some kind of an epiphany connected to her 'Saturn return' and decided that she wanted out of the relationship. A Saturn return refers to time when the planet Saturn goes back to the position it was in at the moment you were born. Astrologers say it signifies the end of one life-cycle and the beginning of the next, and it happens at around the ages of 29, 58 and 84, bringing with it 'monumental shifts' in lifestyle.

Vogue Williams flaunts her toned physique in a skimpy bikini as she joins her ripped husband Spencer Matthews on holiday in Spain

Vogue Williams flaunted her toned physique in a skimpy bikini as she joined her husband Spencer Matthews on holiday in Spain on Monday. The Irish presenter, 39, slipped into the green two-piece as she took a dip in the Mediterranean sea. She accessorised her beach ensemble as she kept a low profile with a pair of cream Celine sunglasses and a cream cap. To finish her look, Vogue wore a chunky gold necklace, gold earrings, a myriad of silver bracelets and matching silver rings. Meanwhile, Spencer showcased his washboard abs as he splashed in the sea wearing a pair of blue shorts. The former Made in Chelsea star and his model-turned-presenter wife looked happier than ever as they were spotted swimming in the sea. The Irish presenter, 39, slipped into the green two-piece as she took a dip in the Mediterranean sea As they made their way back from the beach, Vogue was seen picking up a shell buried in the sand. The holiday comes after Vogue revealed in May that she often feels 'mum guilt' when she is away from her children working. Speaking on The Life of Bryony podcast, she said that like many mums, she has put pressure on herself to 'do and be everything'. 'I suffer from mum guilt all the time', Vogue admitted. 'I feel guilty when I am working, and I feel guilty when I am with my kids. I worry when I spend more time with one of them and not the others. 'I spend a lot of time with Theodore and Gigi because I take them places – so I have to create time to spend with Otto on his own. 'I think as women we put so much pressure on ourselves to be able to do and be everything. Going out there and working should be great for your children to see. 'Whether you're a working mum or staying at home, I think you're always going to feel some level of guilt. Speculating about why Vogue was putting so much pressure on herself as a parent, host Bryony Gordon, 45, admitted that her attitude may reflect the beliefs of a generation. She said: 'Women of our generation were brought up with that notion – that you can have it all. 'Even the question itself – you see these high-profile women always get asked that question. No one is asking that question of men. 'I don't want to have it all – I don't need to be everything to everyone.' 'Everyone just has to accept that sometimes, laundry is a nightmare, and we might forget to reply to an email or several.'
