Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana has been suspended four games and fined for his altercation with a fan during an 8-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on June 19.
The altercation between Santana and the fan came in the seventh inning of the Pirates' game at Comerica Park and included Santana jumping into the air to take a swing at the fan, who was sitting behind the Pirates' bullpen.

"Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana has received a four-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his aggressive conduct toward a fan near the bullpen during the second game of Thursday's doubleheader at Detroit's Comerica Park," Michael Hill, MLB's Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations, said in a statement.
The statement said Santana has elected to appeal the suspension and fine, meaning he remains eligible to pitch for the Pirates until the appeal process comes to a close.

When asked after the game about the situation and what escalated it, Santana told reporters via an interpreter that he didn't want to "get into" the details of what caused it but said the fan "crossed the line" a few times throughout the night. The fan was removed from the game by Tigers' security, while Santana had to be walked back by a member of the Pirates' bullpen staff.

"Like I said, you guys know me and you know my temper. I'm a calm person and they crossed the line a few times. I would like to leave it at that," Santana said on June 19 through Pirates interpreter Stephen Morales.
Santana entered the game in the ninth inning with the game tied 4-4 but was only able to pitch to one hitter before the game was sent into its second rain delay of the evening. In that at-bat, Santana got Tigers right fielder Zach McKinstry to fly out to center.
The 6-foot-2 right-hander holds a 1.72 ERA in 31⅓ innings of work this season across 32 appearances.
The Pirates started their three-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers 15½ games back of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Bayern Munich advances in the Club World Cup with 2-1 win over Boca Juniors

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Michael Olise fired Bayern Munich into the knockout stages of the Club World Cup, scoring in the 84th minute for a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors on Friday night. German champion Bayern made it two wins in Group C and advanced to the round of 16 with a game to spare. Olise secured the victory at Hard Rock Stadium after Miguel Merentiel had put Boca in position for a draw with a brilliant solo goal in the 66th. Bayern, which tops the group, took the lead on Harry Kane's clinical finish in the 18th and went on to miss of a slew of chances before Merentiel's equalizer. South American teams had been unbeaten in their first nine games of this expanded Club World Cup. Bayern looked like it would be held until Olise's cool finish. Collecting Kane's layoff inside the box, the forward curled a powerful first-time effort low into the bottom corner. Bayern has the luxury of resting players for its final group game against second-place Benfica on Tuesday, which could be bad news for Boca. Argentine giant Boca, which plays Auckland City, needs Bayern to beat Benfica to have any chance of advancing to the next round. 'We knew it wasn't going to be easy, we knew we were coming into a hostile environment, hot weather, it was tough. It's a massive tournament. We are playing against the best teams in the world. We just have to compete to our highest level and we should be able to beat most teams.' — Kane. 'We have to find a way (to advance). A draw would've been great but it's up to us to compete and do our best and I would not be surprised if that happened.' — Boca Juniors coach Miguel Angel Russo. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Rays cruise past Tigers 14-8 as Díaz hits 2 homers and Thaiss drives in 4 runs

TAMPA, Fla. -- Yandy Díaz was 3 for 5 with two homers, Matt Thaiss drove in four runs and every Rays starter had at least one hit in Tampa Bay's 14-8 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. The 14 runs given up was a season high for Detroit, which entered with the best record in the majors. Díaz hit his 19th career leadoff homer, launching a 3-2 fastball over the right-center fence. In the fifth, his solo shot extended the Rays' lead to 9-3 and gave him multiple homers in a game for the first time since May 11, 2019. Curtis Mead was 2 for 2 with three walks, three runs and an RBI. Díaz, Taylor Walls and Kameron Misner each drove in two for Tampa Bay, which is 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Yankees in the American League East. Rays starter Shane Baz (7-3) won his fourth consecutive decision, striking out six and giving up four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Tigers left fielder Riley Greene was 3 for 3 with two homers and four RBIs. It was his sixth multihomer game and third this season. He now has 29 RBIs over his last 29 games dating to May 20. Colt Keith also homered for Detroit, which has lost four of its last six. Tampa Bay chased Tigers starter Jack Flaherty (5-8) in the bottom of the third after a bases-loaded double by Walls. Flaherty has surrendered 15 combined runs over his past two starts, raising his season ERA from 3.41 to 4.83. The Rays scored four runs in the bottom of the first, their most in the opening frame since they had four in a 5-4 home win over the Angels on April 9. Tigers RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 3.97 ERA) gets the start against Tampa Bay RHP Ryan Pepiot (4-6, 3.11).
