BBC star banned from camping at Glastonbury after 'trashing' campervan
BBC radio DJ Jo Whiley is no longer allowed to hire a campervan during Glastonbury after one got "trashed" in a previous year at the festival. The 59-year-old broadcaster spilled the details about when she stayed in a Winnebago motorhome on-site.
Jo, who hosts coverage of the event for the BBC, says she had ended up recording interviews from the hired campervan. She shared that stars such as Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, The Klaxons, and Amy Winehouse attempted to stay dry in the van when the British weather took over the festival.
The aftermath saw the Winnebago in a state of disarray, leading to Jo being prohibited from hiring a motor home for future festivals, she told The Times. Nowadays, she opts for a hotel stay close to the festival grounds, alongside fellow BBC personalities.
But her lush Glasto hotel days are a stark contrast to her teenage years when she experienced her tent sliding towards the Pyramid Stage due to heavy rain.
Reflecting on those early days, she shared: "I remember our tent, which was right in front of the Pyramid Stage, sliding down a hill towards the stage. We left at five o'clock the following morning, after cooking bacon sandwiches on the platform of the train station.
"Accommodation has improved since then. We did the Winnebago thing and it got trashed and then we weren't allowed to have another one.
"We did shows from there, so we had the Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Klaxons, Mika and Amy Winehouse - they kept coming into the Winnebago to do interviews because it was the only dry place.
"I remember interviewing Amy Winehouse and Blake [Fielder-Civil] from basically my bedroom, with my kids there, too. I can't remember exactly who was responsible for the trashing, but I'm sure the Klaxons played a fairly large part."
Jo now reveals she has maintained the same quarters at the hotel for the last decade and expresses how it "feels like home" whenever she makes her way to Glastonbury, reported Bristol Live.
Those at this year's festival are being spared from replicating Jo's waterlogged Glasto experience, as scorching temperatures have been recorded.
Despite some drops in temperature leading to showers recently, Worthy Farm basked in highs of 27C on Saturday, nudging towards the sweltering 32.2C peak from 2017.
This edition of the festival has already featured an array of world-famous performers, including Charli XCX, The 1975 and Neil Young.
Olivia Rodrigo will headline the Pyramid Stage tonight, June 29, after Rod Stewart takes the legendary teat-time slot.
Viewers can catch live broadcast festivities from Worthy Farm through the BBC, with Jo hosting alongside Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne, Jack Saunders, Huw Stephens, and Jamz Supernova.
As presenter, Jo has grown quite fond of Glastonbury Festival, to the extent that she hosted her very own "GlastonWhiley" during its hiatus year.

Jermaine Jenas made a rare public appearance following his axe by BBC bosses last year as he attended the glitzy GRM gala on Tuesday. The event, which is hosted by the magazine of the same name and celebrates black British culture and UK-based rap and grime artists, took place at London's Hurlingham Club. As Jermaine slowly begins to relaunch his career with a string of podcast appearances, the presenter was joined by boxer Derek Chisora at the event. The pair beamed as they posed for snaps together, joining stars including Alesha Dixon and Ella Eyre at the event. Jermaine - who was capped 21 times by his country between 2003 and 2009 - was dismissed by BBC bosses in August 2024 over allegations of workplace misconduct after sending explicit texts to two female employees. While at the time Jermaine said he and wife Ellie Penfold, who married in 2011, hoped to work through their marital troubles, the couple eventually split in March this year. The presenter later admitted the break-up wasn't his call as he grovelled for forgiveness before accepting his fate. The ex-footballer is now trying to rebuild his career with a series of podcast appearances and continues to open up on the scandal that ended a promising partnership between himself and the BBC, which cost him his £190,000 salary. He also revealed he has opened up his own production company - which has helped open new doors for his career, addressing the fact that he wasn't allowed to do certain things while employed by the BBC in what has become his previous life. But Jenas has now admitted how much he really lost through the episode, and revealed the promise he made to himself when the decision was made to let him go. Speaking to Reece Mennie on his podcast, he said: 'Having worked in the media for the last ten years, and having been through what I've been through for the last year, been a really difficult moment for myself and my family what happened which I have always held up my hand and taken full responsibility for, that's very important to do. 'You go through a lot of different emotions of anger and blame, but eventually you realise: "Take responsibility, Jermaine, and you'll be able to move forward." 'Because of their ability to take away my life, in terms of every deal I had, the jobs that I had at that particular time, I said that is never happening to me again, so I've recently set up my own production company. 'My agency that I had at the time weren't that supportive of it. 'This is not their fault, but when you're in this kind of media bubble where you work for the BBC, there are so many walls in terms of what they want you to do and what you're not allowed to do. 'Betting companies want to work with me because I'm in football; BBC hate that because of the issues to do with gambling in general, so they block all of that. 'So there were a lot of blocks on one side and football was bringing me some stuff, but the reality is that it ALL got wiped out. It all got taken away.' Penfold was left 'raging' and kicked the former Tottenham Hotspur star out of their bedroom at their £1million family home when it was revealed he had sent explicit messages to two members of staff at the BBC. Jenas confessed to lying to Penfold, who describes herself as a 'wife and mother' in her Instagram bio, during a family holiday to Spain when he sneaked off to talk to his bosses about the messages. The former England star admitted sending the texts but insists he has done nothing illegal. He denied ever sending indecent images or videos and said the messages were between consenting adults, one of whom 'made it clear she was interested'. However Jenas said he is 'ashamed' and 'deeply sorry' as he apologised for his conduct. He revealed he was fired in an excruciating video call - while he was on a family holiday in Marbella, Spain, with his wife and their three children. Jenas slammed this as 'grim', having to 'sit there and listen to what you've said' as four people on the Zoom call read out his inappropriate text messages. He said he went on to lie to his wife after being informed of the allegations to 'find a way out of this mess'. Ellie broke her silence on events at the launch of her new personal care brand Preppy in November. She said: 'My only focus has been on our children and building my brand Preppy. Now I just want to move forward. 'Naturally this has been hard for me but my only concern has been our children and that will not change.' The news of Jenas's sacking came moments before he went live on air on talkSPORT radio. He returned to punditry work last month, saying on talkSPORT his conduct was 'wildly inappropriate'. If it was up to me - and I think a lot of men are like this - I'd probably be prepared to be unhappy for the rest of my life if [it meant] I had my kids in it. 'It's a man thing. If I wake up with my kids everyday, I'm quite happy to sacrifice the happiness. The reality is, we were both in a position where we like: "Are we really happy"? 'From her side of things, she's probably ran the course much more than me. But I was much more happy to go: "I'll be unhappy if I can stay in this house with you and these kids". But it wasn't to be for her and we went our separate ways. 'She has understood the scenario that we've been in as a family. Kids first is our motto. We have to be the best parents we can possibly be. So I've been spending so much time at home. 'Not loads has changed really, it's just mine and her relationship has gone into more of a friendship than a relationship. 'I do believe there is going to come a moment where I'm sat in my apartment one day and be like: "This is mad. I had my whole family around me every single day. [Now] I'm not hearing that pitter patter of feet." 'That's going to be the tough side of it. But that's part of dealing with the situation. The reality is, me and my wife didn't split up because I sent some text messages to some people at work. 'We had issues for a period of time and it all comes to a head. Eventually, you make a decision to say, as adults: "We will be better parents for our children if we remain friends". We had 16 amazing years together. She's a great woman.'

The pair took over the internet becoming 'couple goals' for the British public as they showed off their glamorous life as well as their happy family with their daughter Bambi. Although, they haven't had an easy ride, as the couple split in 2024 following rumours and speculation. It was later revealed in Molly's Amazon Prime documentary Behind It All, that their relationship took a turn following Tommy's alcohol reliance. The pair reunited during the second release of Molly's documentary, and have kept their relationship rather private since. Now, Tommy has released his own documentary with BBC Three which he has said shows the 'raw and real side of the 'worst year of his life'. In the six part documentary the boxer is said to "open up about his life, legacy and battle to prove his worth - inside the ring and out of it." He told the BBC his reason for creating the documentary. He said: "I was really going through a tough time, and I just thought if there's any time to document this, it would be now. I want people not just to see all the great stuff that they see like winning fights on TV or living the life on Instagram. "I want people to see me going through a difficult time as well. Because that's real life. I wanted the documentary to be raw and real, and that's exactly what you've got." Article continues below Tommy described 2024 as the worst year of his life, having needed hand surgery as well as his extremely public break up. He explained: "2024 was awful. I started last January with a hand surgery and since then it just from went from bad to worse. I had my problems with alcohol, I was absent from the ring, I had problems in my private life and just lost touch with myself. "2025 is completely different. Already this year we've managed to make an amazing documentary. I've had my comeback fight. I'm back in the ring and back being active. My private life has never been better. And yeah, everything is just a complete opposite of 2024." The boxer believes that his initial injury is what started his difficult year, and is what was the root of the majority of his problems "both inside and outside the ring". He continued: "But I've come so far and I've done a full turn. I've gone from having nothing in my life, to living in a house alone, going through the toughest time of my life, to now having everything back and feeling myself again. I'm back in the gym and back training. I'm back in shape. My family's there and I've come full circle. I couldn't be any happier. "In terms of my family life, everything is private now between me and Molly, and we're in the happiest place possible. And that's all that anyone needs to know! Everyone's entitled to a private life and so right now we're going to live our private life, because we haven't had that since we were 19 or 20 years old. "It's all been lived out in front of a camera or on the front page of a newspaper. So now, going forward, we're finally going to take that private time."
