(AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko, File) ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Chicago Cubs selected the contract of right-hander Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-hander Nate Pearson to Iowa on Monday ahead of a four-game series against the Cardinals. Fulmer, 32, returns to the Cubs after going 3-5 with two saves and a 4.42 ERA in 58 appearances for Chicago in 2023. Advertisement Fulmer missed the 2024 season after undergoing UCL revision surgery on his right elbow on Oct. 18, 2023. Fulmer, who was the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year with Detroit, had Tommy John surgery on March 27, 2019, and returned to the major leagues on July 27, 2020, just after the start of the pandemic-shortened season. 'It took me a few months to get stuff and velo back,' Fulmer said about his first Tommy John surgery. 'Once I got all the game reps I needed, my stuff came back. So, I think we're getting on that timeline now where I'm feeling good, body's feeling great, no complaints, stuff's starting to come back a little bit and I'm really just excited.' Fulmer signed a minor league deal with Boston on Feb. 2, 2024, but did not play for the rest of the season. He allowed three runs on four hits in his lone appearance with Boston in April at Tampa Bay before the Red Sox designated him for assignment four days later. Advertisement Fulmer inked a minor league contract with the Cubs on April 22 and went 1-0 with a 2.96 ERA in 24 1/3 innings over 15 games with Iowa. 'You know he's went through a lot, you know he's sticking with it,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'It's a sign of what you're made of, I think. It really is. I know moments like getting back to the big leagues are important, and they validate a lot of the hard work and a lot of the rehabs and a lot of the things like that. You're happy for guys like Michael who get a shot again.' Pearson was recalled from Iowa on Saturday, and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks in two innings on Sunday versus Seattle. Chicago (46-31) entered play Monday with a 3 1/2 game lead over Milwaukee and a 4 1/2 game lead over St. Louis in the NL Central Division. ___ AP MLB:

Cardinals Farm Report: Jose Fermin Making Case for Call-up

Cardinals Farm Report: Jose Fermin Making Case for Call-up originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The St. Louis Cardinals' farm system is shaping up to be as exciting as any in the game of baseball. Although they don't have a large group of prospects in the top 100, many young players in the organization are flourishing under the new "youth movement" that the Cardinals front office is after. Advertisement Here's a look at the Cardinals' top minor league performers of last week and a storyline to keep an eye on in the near future: Jose Fermin, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) Fermin, 26, has bounced back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis in his two-plus season tenure with the organization, but the numbers he's put up this year - and his offensive surge last week - have shown that he's making a case for a ticket back to the bigs. St. Louis Cardinals middle infielder Jose Fermin prepares for batting practice on Feb. 25, 2025. Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images In five games played last week, the 26-year-old middle infielder went 11-for-20 (.550) with nine RBI, five runs, four doubles, three walks and stolen bases and two home runs. Fermin is currently slashing .310/.432/.487 and leads the team with 20 doubles on the year. Advertisement Nathan Church, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) After being promoted to Triple-A earlier this month, Church has stayed hot for the Redbirds. In his last five games, the 24-year-old outfielder hit .429 with six RBI, six runs, three walks, two doubles, triples and home runs - including a grand slam. He's led the team in average (.426), on base (.493), slugging (.656) and OPS (1.149) in the last 30 days despite only being on the team for 21. Joshua Baez, Springfield Cardinals (Double-A) Like Church, Baez has been on fire since being promoted at the start of the month. He continued his dominant stretch at the plate last week with a 7-for-14 performance (.500), racking up 10 RBI, four walks, three runs scored, three home runs and a double. The 21-year-old's 1.764 OPS led all Texas League hitters by a 0.6-plus margin. Advertisement Storyline to keep an eye on moving forward: Despite some early-season injuries and the loss of No. 11 Cooper Hjerpe to Tommy John surgery, some of the Cardinals' minor league pitching prospects have bounced back in a big way as the season marches on. No. 3 prospect Tink Hence made his return from IL for Double-A Springfield on Friday, completing 4 1/3 no-hit innings while striking out eight and walking just one batter. The team's pitching staff went on to toss a combined no-hitter against Houston's Corpus Christi Hooks. No. 2 prospect Quinn Mathews has been dominant on the mound since his return, as well, carrying a 2.30 ERA with 20 strikeouts in four starts since May 31. Cardinals Continue Chase of NL Central-Leading Cubs in Pivotal Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Having won five of their last six games, the Cardinals are set to take on the NL Central-leading Cubs in a four-game series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Advertisement This series marks the first time the Cardinals and Cubs have met this year. With a record of 46-31, the Cubs hold a 3.5 game lead over the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cardinals enter the series with a record of 42-36, putting them 4.5 games out of first place in the NL Central. They trail the Brewers by one game for the final wild card spot. Can Alec Burleson stay hot? Alec Burleson may be the hottest hitter in baseball. He's slashing .367/.375/.733 with three homers in his last seven games and has a .981 OPS in the month of June. Burleson also has a .303 average against the Cubs in his career. Advertisement 2. How will the Cardinals bullpen fare? The Cardinals have played five games in the last four days, and two of those games went to extra innings. With that, the bullpen is pretty taxed. Cardinals starting pitchers being able to go deep into games could prove to be a deciding factor in the series. It'll be a tough task, though, as the Cubs have one of the best offenses in baseball. 3. Shota Imanaga returns for the Cubs? Over the weekend, Cubs manager Craig Counsell hinted at LHP Shota Imanaga rejoining the team's rotation during the trip to St. Louis. Imanaga, who has been out since early May with a hamstring injury, made a rehab assignment last Friday where he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. The Cubs have yet to announce their starters for games three and four of the series.
