Robert Lewandowski refuses to play for Poland ‘as long as coach is in charge'

Yahoo6 hours ago

Robert Lewandowski has quit the Polish national team, saying he will not return to play for his country while the current manager remains in the role. Michal Probierz, who has been in charge of Poland since 2023, replaced Lewandowski as captain with Napoli's Piotr Zielinski on Sunday.
'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' Lewandowski, 36, wrote on social media. 'I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world.'

The striker, who is Poland's record appearance-maker and top scorer, was not included in Probierz's squad for their fixtures in June in order to rest after finishing the club season with Barcelona. 'Playing in the white and red colours has always been a dream come true for me, but sometimes the body gives a signal that it is necessary to take a breather for a moment,' Lewandowski wrote on social media on 2 June.
Lewandowski did however attend Friday's friendly win against Moldova, appearing on the bench alongside the manager Probierz, as Poland bode farewell to the forward Kamil Grosicki, who was earning his 95th and final cap.
Two days later, the Polish FA said Lewandowski had been replaced by Zielinski as captain of the national team 'by decision of the coach Michal Probierz'. A statement said that 'the coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision'.

Lewandowski has made 158 appearances for Poland – 49 more than the second-highest cap holder Jakub Blaszczykowski – and scored 85 goals – 37 more than the second top scorer, Wlodzimierz Lubanski. He has played at two World Cups and four European Championships, including Euro 2012, jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine. Lewandowski first captained his country in a World Cup qualifier against San Marino in 2013.
Poland face Finland in Helsinki on Tuesday night looking to keep up their 100% record in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Jude Bellingham misses England training due to funeral but could face Senegal

Jude Bellingham missed training on Monday due to a family funeral but will be available for England's season-ending friendly against Senegal. The 21-year-old started Saturday's snoozefest in Barcelona as Thomas Tuchel's side continued their winning start to World Cup qualification with a 1-0 triumph against minnows Andorra. Advertisement England round off the campaign with Tuesday's friendly against Senegal at the City Ground in Nottingham, where Bellingham is ready to feature despite sitting out training due to a personal matter. The Football Association said: '24 players are out training at St. George's Park this afternoon. Jude Bellingham is absent to attend a family funeral and will return to camp later today.' Ollie Watkins withdrew from the camp on Friday due to a minor injury, with Bukayo Saka and Conor Gallagher left out of the 23-man squad for Andorra.

England's Sciver-Brunt Kicks Off Captaincy with Series Sweep

England's Sciver-Brunt Kicks Off Captaincy with Series Sweep originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Nat Sciver-Brunt has begun her tenure as England Women's ODI captain by steering her side to a 3-0 clean sweep against the West Indies. Advertisement The final victory came in a rain-affected match at Taunton, where England chased down 107 in just 65 balls with nine wickets to spare. The contest, shortened to 21 overs per side due to rain, saw England opt to field after winning the toss. Their bowlers quickly capitalized on the conditions, restricting the West Indies to 106 for 8. England then cruised to victory, with Sciver-Brunt leading with a composed half-century. "That's a great way to finish the series," Sciver-Brunt said after the match. "It has rained a few times in Taunton. We wanted to have a bit more opportunity in the middle, but bowling first and the rain didn't help that." This series marked a significant chapter for England, as it was their first under Sciver-Brunt's captaincy following the departure of longtime skipper Heather Knight in March. Advertisement Sciver-Brunt emphasized the importance of exploring different player combinations in the build-up to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India, which begins on September 30. "Looking at different combinations, trying things out. We have to gather information or we won't be able to explore them nearer to the World Cup,' she said. 'It's a pleasing thing to see that everyone given an opportunity has put their hand up.' England now turns its attention to domestic fixtures before regrouping for the eight-team World Cup, where it'll face top sides including Australia, India, and New Zealand. New Barcelona signing to pen 5-year contract on Wednesday

La Liga giants Barcelona are set to tie up the club's first official signing of the summer this coming Wednesday. That's according to Diario Sport, who point towards Joan García as the player primed to put pen to paper on terms with the Blaugrana. Advertisement The name of goalkeeper Joan has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya's capital for several weeks now. This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that, amid a search for reinforcements between the posts, those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou had set their sights firmly on the Espanyol star. Negotiations, in turn, were kicked into gear with Joan and his entourage, over the terms of a contract. And with as much now in place, all that remains is for Barcelona to pay the 24-year-old's release clause. In turn, it should not come as a major surprise to hear of the transfer, on the part of Deco and co, now being considered imminent. Advertisement As per a report from Sport: 'Barça have everything ready for the Espanyol goalkeeper to sign a contract for the next five seasons this Wednesday, according to 'Catalunya Ràdio' and this newspaper can confirm.' Joan's presentation as the newest member of Hansi Flick's squad will then come a few days later, upon the conclusion of the Spaniard's summer vacation. Conor Laird – GSFN
