Former Liverpool and Man Utd star Paul Ince banned for drink-driving

The Sun18-07-2025
FORMER Liverpool and Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has been banned from driving for 12 months and fined £7,085 after admitting to drink-driving.
The 57-year-old was caught swerving his black Range Rover across the road in Cheshire on June 28.
Chester Magistrates Court heard that Ince had 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when stopped by police. Prosecutor Nigel Jones stated, 'On the day in question, the defendant was witnessed by an off-duty police officer driving a vehicle perceived to be swerving across the road.'
The court was told his car hit bollards, bursting two tyres.
Defence lawyer Frank Rogers said, 'My client finds himself today facing the huge impact of a ban, but he accepts he only has himself to blame for that.
He misjudged the fact he believed at the time he would be under the limit.' Rogers explained Ince had two drinks at Heswall Golf Club without eating beforehand.
District Judge Jack McGarva warned Ince, 'The message has got to be if you're going to drive you don't drink at all.'
The former England captain, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United, most recently managed Reading until 2023. - AFP

Soccer-Milner to honour former teammate Jota with jersey number switch

(Reuters) -Brighton & Hove Albion's James Milner will don the number 20 shirt this season as a tribute to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain last month. Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in early July when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames in northwestern Spain. The Portuguese forward had worn the number 20 during his time at Liverpool, where he and Milner played together for three seasons before the veteran midfielder's move to Brighton in 2023. "Once I heard Carlos (Baleba) was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota," Milner said. "(He was) an amazing player I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. So it'd be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League." Liverpool are permanently retiring the number 20 after consultation with the player's wife Rute and family. The squad number will not be used at any level, including the women's team and academy. The 39-year-old Milner recently agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton and is chasing Premier League history of his own. With 638 Premier League appearances already to his name, he sits within striking distance of Gareth Barry's all-time record of 653 games. Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak

Alexander Isak scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. (AFP pic) LONDON : Newcastle have rejected Liverpool's opening bid to sign unsettled Swedish striker Alexander Isak, according to reports on Friday. Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million (US$159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree to a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back-to-back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said, 'He is still our player. He's contracted to us. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. 'My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control.' Liverpool have spent over £250 million so far in the summer window, with Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili joining Wirtz and Ekitike at Anfield.

Nottingham Forest sign winger Ndoye from Bologna

(EPA Images pic) LONDON : Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said today. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around £34 million for the 24-year-old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around €10 million. He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. 'It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started,' Ndoye said. Ndoye could take the place of former Forest winger Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month and also played mainly on the right, like Ndoye. Since making his international debut in 2022, Ndoye has earned 22 caps for Switzerland, starting all five matches at Euro 2024 during their run to the quarter-finals. Forest, who secured a solid seventh-place finish last season, begin their Premier League campaign at home against Brentford on Aug 17.
