Google Is Adding a Battery Health Menu to the Pixel 8a, but Not the Pixel 8 Pro

Yahoo06-05-2025
Google has confirmed that its new Battery Health menu, first seen in Android 16 Beta 3, will only be available on the latest Pixel 9 series and the last released Pixel 8 device, the Pixel 8a, as reported by Android Authority.
The company says that this tool will not be available on older Pixel devices, including the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro—which were released just a few months before the Pixel 8a and are flagship-level phones, unlike the 8a. This means that users of these earlier models will not be able to check their battery's health using Google's own system.
The Battery Health menu can be found in the Settings app on supported devices, given that they are running the latest Android 16 beta. As the name suggests, it gives users information about their phone's current battery capacity as a percentage of its original level.
It also gives tips for extending battery life, such as turning on Adaptive Charging or limiting the maximum charge to 80%. This tool has been a standard part of iPhones since 2018, even on older models like the iPhone 6, but Google's version will only be available on its newest hardware.
Overall, Google made a bad move. I hope they implement it soon, or at least specify exactly why the feature works in the budget device but not the flagships.

XRP stays flat as Bitcoin overtakes Google

XRP stays flat as Bitcoin overtakes Google originally appeared on TheStreet. Bitcoin's relentless climb pushed it to a fresh all-time high late Wednesday, briefly topping $124,450 and overtaking Google parent Alphabet's market capitalization before easing slightly. BTC overtook Google to become the fifth largest asset globally, hitting a $2.456 trillion market cap. The world's largest cryptocurrency now sits firmly above the $120,000 support level, cementing its position as the fifth-largest asset globally. The milestone, achieved during a late-night trading frenzy, was enough to trigger a wave of optimism among bulls. The move confirmed Bitcoin's strong institutional demand, with pension funds, ETFs, and large-cap investors driving unprecedented buying pressure. Ethereum followed suit, holding above $4,750, while Solana, Cardano, and Dogecoin all booked double-digit gains over the week. But one top-10 coin missed the rally entirely, XRP. Despite the sea of green across the crypto leaderboard, XRP stayed locked near $3.24 — virtually unchanged on the day — leaving traders scratching their heads. Data from Coinglass shows that more than $450 million worth of leveraged positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours, with the majority coming from short sellers who bet against Bitcoin's record-breaking run. With Bitcoin's valuation now over $2.4 trillion, traders are already eyeing the next prize, Apple's $3.462 trillion market cap. Google Stock May Pop 325% As Breakup Cuts $67 Billion From Synergies

Google's stock could rise 325% by 2035 if the company is broken up into five parts. However, the resulting loss of operating synergies could cost Google $67 billion in revenue lift and cost savings. A judge is expected to order Google to take action after the company was found guilty in an antitrust trial, according to the Washington Post. Since the judge, Amit Mehta, could order Google to divest its Chrome browser, analysts have been estimating what Alphabet would be worth if it is split up. To create an optimal outcome for investors and customers, Google may wish to pursue a strategic middle path with the following elements: This approach would preserve the operational synergies of keeping the company partially together while boosting the company's market value more than if Alphabet's structure remains unchanged. Google says a breakup would make the company worse off. 'A combination of all the remedies makes it unviable to invest in research and development,' Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai testified in April, according to the Post. The Justice Department's proposed remedies would leave the 'company's intellectual property without value,' Pichai added. I have contacted Google to request comment and will update this post if I receive a response. Alphabet's Breakup Value To Shareholders Since Mehta could order Alphabet to divest Chrome, analysts have been speculating on Alphabet future value if the pieces of the company were independent. An August analysis of the breakup value would put a $3.7 trillion on the company were it split into five units. Here are the valuations of the individual business units: The Loss To Customers Of Breaking Up Alphabet This breakup analysis ascribes no value to the companies being under the same corporate parent. However, that ignores substantial benefits of keeping the various units together. For instance, there are network effects – meaning the more Google services a user adopts, data sharing and integration make the individual services more valuable. In addition, profitable units like search can fund experimental ones such as Waymo during their development phases. Finally, as part of Alphabet, these units can negotiate lower prices with device makers, telecom service providers, and content partners. These ecosystem benefits are worth an estimated $67 billion at the high end. Here are the biggest contributors: What Alphabet Should Do To retain some of these synergies, Alphabet could pursue a strategy that would optimize benefits to shareholders and customers, as follows: This strategic middle path could more than double Alphabet's stock market capitalization to about $6.9 billion by 2035. This assumes a compound annual growth rate of 11% from AI-driven growth, a strong position in advertising, expanded ecosystem benefits, and capturing some of the premium benefits from the partial breakup. Wall Street is modestly optimistic about the future value of Google's stock. The 16 analysts who cover the stock estimate 8.8% upside given an average price target of $219, according to TipRanks.

HTC is getting in on AI glasses, too

With Meta, Google, Samsung, and maybe even Apple working on AI-powered glasses, smart spectacles are quickly becoming the hottest gadget in tech. Now, even HTC is jumping in on the trend with a new pair of Vive Eagle smart glasses that come with built-in speakers, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and an AI voice assistant. The Vive Eagle glasses are currently only available for purchase in Taiwan, but they seem like a direct rival to Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. They come with AI-powered image translation, which lets wearers ask the Vive AI voice assistant to translate what they're seeing into 13 different languages. Other features include the ability to record reminders, ask for restaurant recommendations, and take notes (sound familiar?). HTC says its Vive Eagle glasses weigh just 49 grams, around the same as Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. The Vive Eagle glasses cost around $520 USD and come equipped with Zeiss sun lenses, with options for a red, brown, gray, or black frame. It's not clear when — or if — HTC plans on bringing these smart glasses to North America or Europe, but Meta might have some competition if it does.
