When Aamir Khan Spoke About Sarfarosh's Message: 'One Shouldn't Look At All Muslims With Distrust'

News184 days ago
As IPS officers visit Aamir Khan's home owing to Sarfarosh influence, here's a look back at when he spoke about the film addressing Pakistan's ISI, terrorism and Muslims in India.
A recent video showing a bus filled with IPS officers entering Aamir Khan's Mumbai residence stirred a wave of curiosity online. Was it an official police visit? A sudden security issue? Speculation ran wild — until a spokesperson from Aamir Khan's team clarified that the IPS trainees had formally requested a meeting with the actor.
Ever since the release of his 1999 film Sarfarosh, in which Aamir portrayed the fearless IPS officer ACP Ajay Singh Rathore, the actor has become something of a symbolic figure for young officers in training.
Back in 2000, in a conversation with NDTV, Aamir spoke about the themes of Sarfarosh — particularly on whether he had any doubts about how the audience would react to a film that directly addressed terrorism, cross-border conflict and religious identity in India.
He spoke about how the film tackled the subject of Pakistan's ISI and cross-border terrorism — but without vilifying ordinary people or generalising an entire country. He said, 'It deals with the ISI, the proxy war that Pakistan is fighting through the ISI. But it doesn't indulge in name-calling. It doesn't say that all Pakistanis are bad because that's a ridiculous statement. I mean, you have human beings all over the world and some people are good and some people are bad. Or some people have their reasons for doing something which is not right, which could be quite unreasonable. Some people have an evil bent of mind."
In the interview, Aamir Khan also spoke about how the film shows the mistrust Indian Muslims sometimes face, especially around national security. He said the film chose to focus on a positive message. 'It talks about distrust towards Muslims living in the country, which is quite understandable because it is human nature. So the film tries to take a very positive attitude towards that and tells all us Indians that one should not look at all Muslims with distrust. All Muslims do not feel disloyal towards India as their country."
Aamir also said that the film does not shy away from calling out the problems on both sides — including a minority of Indian Muslims who feel aligned with Pakistan and a minority of Hindus who blanket Muslims with suspicion.
'There is a certain section of Muslims living in the country, I believe, who do have their loyalties towards Pakistan and this film tries to tell them that this is not right and they shouldn't do that. So it tells that section of Muslims, which I believe is a minority, who do have their loyalties towards Pakistan that that is not the right thing to do. It tells that section of Hindus, which again I believe is a minority, which looks upon all Muslims with distrust."
The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Viewers split as Aamir Khan takes Sitaare Zameen Par to YouTube instead of OTT

Every time takes a professional call, it tends to split the crowd – fans, followers, and critics alike. His latest controversy? The YouTube release of Sitaare Zameen Par. At the time of its release, Aamir had stated his film would not be released on any OTT/digital platform. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now His stand was widely appreciated as it seemed to prioritise the larger interests of a struggling industry and audiences over his role as producer and actor. With the film doing well in multiplexes, he was felicitated for his seemingly charitable move. Cut to a press conference on July 30, Aamir announced that Sitaare Zameen Par would be released on YouTube under a pay-per-view model for just `100 and had apparently turned down a `100-crore offer from a streaming platform for the digital rights of his film. This decision has divided netizens and stakeholders on the ground. Some are accusing Aamir of misleading the audience and disrupting the industry's conventional release model: theatrical release first, followed by OTT for home viewing. Others are defending him, claiming YouTube is the original – and still the largest – OTT platform, and that offering the film as a paid title post-theatrical run is a bold, innovative step rather than a betrayal. Hansal Mehta in fact has lauded his approach, as it gives him greater 'creative control'. A timeline of Aamir's stance on OTT release March 9: Speaking against the prevailing OTT-first mentality, Aamir had said, 'We're telling our consumers that you can come and consume our product (film). If you don't, we'll bring it to you in eight weeks (through OTT platforms ), when it will be free of cost as you've already paid for it (through subscription). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I don't know how to sell a product twice. Earlier, I used to watch movies because I had no option. Now, it's dependent on a fancy for films. So we've killed our own business model.' June 19: Multiplex Association of India (MAI) praised Aamir. 'Aamir Khan has always been a filmmaker who puts the audience first. His decision to bring Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively to cinemas is a significant show of confidence in theatres and the shared magic of the moviegoing experience. Indian exhibitors thank Aamir Khan for standing by theatres,' said Kamal Gianchandani, President of MAI. July 3: In response to his felicitation by theatre owners, Aamir told ANI,'Since I haven't sold the OTT rights and our film is not releasing on OTT, isliye shayad All India Theatre Owners have decided to felicitate me for the step that I have taken. I am happy that they thought about it.' July 30: Aamir apologised for the YouTube release at the press conference. For bypassing OTT giants, he said, 'When I release a film after 8 weeks on a subscription model, people aren't buying my film. They're only subscribing to the OTT platform. It wouldn't matter if a person wants to watch the film or doesn't after subscribing to the platform. It has always been my dream to reach every Indian at a reasonable price so they can afford it,' he added. On his YouTube strategy, he told PTI, 'This is my private cinema chain. Think of it like Aamir Khan Productions has opened a new cinema chain, which is in everyone's house and in everyone's pocket... And that is why I am doing this. I got good offers from OTT channels. But I don't want those ₹100–125 crore from OTT channels. I want to earn ₹100 from my audience. I prefer that more.'

Bangladeshi Model Arrested In Kolkata, Fake Aadhaar, Ration Cards Recovered

Kolkata: A Bangladeshi woman was arrested this week in Kolkata for residing in India using fake documents. Shanta Paul was working as a crew member of an airline company and was also a small-time model, the police said after arresting her with fake Indian documents on Tuesday. She entered India in 2023 from Bangladesh's Barisal using a valid passport, and then rented a flat in Kolkata through a property dealer. Paul allegedly told the owner she wanted to live separately as her family wasn't happy with her marrying a Muslim man. To sign the rent agreement, she gave fake Indian documents like the Aadhaar card, PAN card, and the voter ID. According to her fake documents, accessed by NDTV, she was born in 1998. She also married Shaik Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Andhra Pradesh, on June 5, according to her marriage certificate accessed by NDTV. Her marriage was registered in the bordering district of Nadia. "The duo rented an apartment in Park Street and later moved to Golf Green, where they began living together. Shanta reportedly kept Ashraf's passport in her possession. With the help of a local agent, she allegedly forged multiple Indian identity documents, including a ration card, an Aadhaar card, a voter ID, and a PAN card," the news agency PTI quoted a police officer as saying. Paul also allegedly used fake Indian documents to jointly rent properties in Kolkata with Ashraf, who works in the merchant navy, the officer said. She represented Bangladesh in the Indo-Bangla Beauty Pageant in 2016 and went on to become Miss Asia Global in 2019. In the last two years, she acted in Tamil and Bengali films, and even signed an Odia film, the officer said. "Following her success in modelling, she began her acting career before eventually joining a Bangladeshi airline," he added. She is currently in police custody till August 8.
