Between a 24-hour news cycle and a never-ending loop of social media trends, remembering what happened yesterday, much less at the start of the year could prove difficult.
From American Eagle's controversial jeans ad and the ongoing Labubu pandemonium, 2025 (at least so far) has been chock-full of viral moments.
In an effort to remind you, our readers, what some of those big moments were, we've rounded them up and recapped them (in case the train passed you by on one or more of these.)

Americans say 'goodbye' to TikTok
Before TikTok "went dark" for 12 hours in January, some of its American users had already prepared for the worst, issuing last goodbyes and posting heartfelt tributes in case they would never be able to use the social media platform again.
Influencers, content creators and casual users shared memories and posted memes and for an app they said fostered a sense of community and belonging, in addition to income.
The federal legislation that required ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to the divest the app's U.S. assets, was designed to assuage national security concerns, i.e., fears that the Beijing-based company was sharing U.S. user data with China.
Fortunately, for TikTok, President Donald Trump came through with an executive order that delayed the ban for 75 days so ByteDance could find an owner in the U.S. Trump has since issued three executive orders to delay the ban, with the most recent deadline being Sept. 17. The fate of the short-form video app now lies in the hands of Chinese officials, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, and they have yet to approve a U.S.-drafted deal to sell the app's American assets.
If Chinese officials don't approve the deal before the deadline, and if Trump does not issue another executive order to delay the ban, TikTok could go dark again.

Gulf of Mexico? Gulf of America.
Gulf of Mexico? More like Gulf of America, President Donald Trump decreed on Inauguration Day.
The name change went into effect on Feb. 10, a day after Trump declared Feb. 9 as the "first-ever Gulf of America Day" while en route to Super Bowl 59.
Tech giants Google and Apple moved quickly to honor Trump's order after the new name was formally adopted by the Geographic Names Information System.
Trump's executive order ruffled more than a few feathers, most notably Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, who threatened legal action against Google and joked that she would start calling the United States "Mexican America" in retaliation.
Kendrick Lamar brought the heat to Super Bowl LIX
Between the fashion and the set list (featuring SZA), Kendrick Lamar's halftime show performance at Super Bowl 59 was one for the books.
Not to mention surprise cameos from Uncle Sam, i.e., Samuel L. Jackson and tennis legend (Drake's ex) Serena Williams, who crip-walked onstage.

Within the span of 13 minutes, the Grammy- and Pulitzer-winning rapper dropped easter eggs, trolled Drake with famed diss trick "Not Like Us" and performed a total of 11 tracks (with stunning visuals and an ensemble, to boot.)
Troves of spectators, including fans, took to social media to either react (live) and/or discuss all things related to Lamar's performance.
But the fun did not stop there, as Lamar and SZA took "GNX" collaborations on the road for the Grand National Tour, which concluded at Northwest Stadium in Washington, D.C. on June 18.
Katy Perry hate (space?) train
Haters gonna hate. And Katy Perry, one of six notable women catapulted to the edge of space, got a lot of it.
Because of billionaire Jeff Bezos' private space company Blue Origin, Perry and her crewmates got the chance to take a quick trip beyond Earth's atmosphere, complete with out-of-this-world views and a dose of microgravity.
The internet, including fellow celebrities Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski, were critical of the voyage, which some considered "out of touch," even a "bit gluttonous."
The hate train, mostly aimed at Perry, continued through the end of the mission, which took place on April 14.
Perry, for her part, did not comment on the controversy until weeks later, telling a fan who congratulated the "Dark Horse" singer on the opening of her tour, that the online world tries to make her a "human Piñata."
"I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed," Perry wrote.

100 men vs. 1 gorilla debate
Could 100 men defeat a gorilla in a fight? The hypothetical question sparked discourse (and inspired memes) across social media platforms for several days in late April.
We, like everyone else involved, were just as curious about the answer so we decided to ask an expert.

Haunted doll blamed for New Orleans hijinks
Annabelle was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or the right place at the wrong time. (Depends on who you ask.)
The haunted "Raggedy Ann" doll, which served as inspiration for a horror movie of the same name, was minding her own business when the internet turned on her.
Annabelle, on a multi-city tour across the U.S., was accused of orchestrating the escape of 10 inmates from an Orleans Parish jail and a fire that decimated a plantation just south of Baton Rouge, event thats coincided with her visit to Louisiana.
Some were amused by the coincidence, while others, like the X user above, were certain Annabelle had something to do with it.
Once the rumor mill gets going, especially on social media, its hard to stop, something Ghost City Tours learned quicky. Tim Nealon, founder of Ghost City Tours, told USA TODAY they had received death threats.
Most of them came from people who were "absolutely convinced" that the company had something to do with all of the hijinks, Nealon said.
"I did not think people were taking it seriously, (because) I kept seeing jokes about it on Instagram and TikTok," Nealon said. "But, I didn't realize people were out here like, actually thinking that this was legit."
Ghost City Tours also released a statement on social media, writing that they while they were of the comments being thrown around, they could confirm Annabelle had nothing to do with the fire.

Labubu craze
Labubus are to 2025 like Stanley cups were to 2024. And the monster plushies, so popular it spawned a knockoff, are this season's fashion accessory of choice.
The doll was designed a decade ago by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist.
The toy, part of "The Monsters" line, and other figurines are currently sold by Beijing-based toy maker Pop Mart in "blind boxes," a sealed package that contains a mystery toy, typically from a themed series.
But the craze for Labubus began to surge in popularity months after Lisa of K-pop girl group BLACKPINK mentioned her "secret obsession" with Pop Mart collectibles in a December 2024 interview with Vanity Fair.
"The video that started all the Labubu craze.." one user wrote in VF's comment section.
Labubus have become a hot commodity since then, as consumers worlwide struggle (and sometimes fight each other) to nab the real thing for themselves. While those lucky enough to get one, or more are either already plotting their next kill or buying outfits for the one, or ones they already own.

Jeans or genes? American Eagle ad starring Sydney Sweeney blasted
American Eagle sought to promote its jeans through its campaign starring Sydney Sweeney, but somehow managed to elicit controversy online and support from the White House in the process.
"Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color," the "Euphoria" star said in the ad. "My jeans are blue."
Critics were quick the slam the ad, arguing that the wordplay was a subtle attempt at endorsing eugenics.
By glorifying the actor's white genetics as "good," many argued the ad promoted the belief that some genetic features are better than others.
President Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz and White House Communications Director Steven Cheung rushed toward the ad's defense saying that the backlash was just nonsense coming from liberals.

'Kiss Cam' incident at Coldplay concert
Things got a little uncomfy for a couple attending a Coldplay concert in Foxborough, Massachusetts last month. You know the one.
Two concertgoers (and tech company Astronomer, by proxy) were thrust into the spotlight after a "Kiss Cam" cameo.
The clip shows a man and a woman leap out of close embrace and duck out of view after they realized everyone at Gillette Stadium, including front man Chris Martin, could see them on the jumbotron.
"Come on, you're OK!" Martin told the pair. "Uh oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy."
Internet sleuths were on the case shortly after the clip went viral, with many curious and determined to uncover the identity of the couple.
And some of them did. Days later, Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company's chief people officer, Kristin Cabot, resigned.
Then Astronomer hired Martin's ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, a "temporary spokesperson" to be the face of its newest advertisement.
The scandal also became a sort of spectacle, spawning reenactments and prompting musical artists to issue warnings ahead of shows.

UPS vs. Whirlpool: 2 High-Yield Stocks That Crashed, but Only one Is a Buy
Key Points Both UPS and Whirlpool's stocks are on multiyear downtrends, raising their yields. Whirlpool has cut its dividend in response, but UPS hasn't. How about bargain-priced dividend stocks that you've actually heard of? Well, you're in luck! The stocks of two iconic American brands are currently sitting in the bargain bin. The companies are shipping behemoth UPS (NYSE: UPS) and appliance maker Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR). Both stocks have been slowly sinking for years, with share prices now down more than 60% from their all-time highs! Both stocks fell again -- by more than 15% -- after their recent second-quarter earnings reports, but one looks more likely to recover. Only one cut its dividend Both UPS and Whirlpool have long histories of paying and regularly increasing their dividends. By July, their share-price slumps had pushed both of their dividend yields above 7%. A yield that high is tempting, but neither company was on track to generate enough free cash flow to cover it. When a company can't cover its dividend with free cash flow, it has to dip into the cash on its balance sheet, take on additional debt, or find some other way to fund the payout. UPS is going to try to make it work somehow, according to CEO Carol Tome on the Q2 earnings call. She told investors, "You have our commitment to a stable and growing dividend." That means the company will be on the hook for at least $5.5 billion in dividend payouts this year, which seems almost certain to exceed its free cash flow for the year. That keeps UPS's yield high for now, but investors should remember that there's no guarantee the company's position won't change without warning, resulting in a surprise dividend cut. Whirlpool, on the other hand, cut its annual payout in half from $7 per share to $3.50 per share. That means its yield is now much lower than UPS's (4% vs. 7.5%), but its $190 million total payout is also much more manageable, making its dividend more sustainable over the long term. It also means the dividend cut is baked into the company's current share price, whereas if UPS makes a cut, its stock price will probably sink even lower in response. The ups and downs of tariffs UPS and Whirlpool are both bracing for the impact of tariffs, but in different ways. For UPS, the tariffs are a huge risk. They will likely cause imports to decline, resulting in lower shipping volumes. With some tariffs kicking in just as the labor market shows signs of weakness, they could negatively impact overall consumer spending (and thus, shipping) during the critical holiday shopping season. On the other hand, the tariffs may actually help Whirlpool by hurting its foreign competitors like LG, Samsung, and Haier. The Trump administration has proposed high tariffs on countries that happen to export lots of large appliances to the U.S. These include South Korea (25%), Thailand (36%), Vietnam (46%), and China (as high as 145%). Many of these rates are in flux, but even if they end up at 10% or 15%, it will still give Whirlpool, which manufactures more than 80% of its products in the U.S., a big pricing advantage. Although UPS's yield may now be higher than Whirlpool's, its prospects are looking dimmer thanks to economic factors outside of its control. Meanwhile, even after its dividend cut, Whirlpool still offers a decent yield and a compelling valuation. If I were to pick one, I'd go with Whirlpool hands down. Oklahoma will require teachers from NY, California to prove they back 'America First'
Oklahoma's new "America First" teacher certification test will require educators from California and New York to agree with conservative curriculum. Teachers from California and New York who want to work in Oklahoma public schools will be required to pass a certification test to prove they share the state's conservative political values. Regardless of the subject or grade they teach, they'll have to show they know "the biological differences between females and males" and that they agree with the state's American history standards, which includes teachings of a disproved conspiracy theory that the Democratic Party stole the 2020 presidential election from President Donald Trump. The state department of education will implement the new certification test for teachers from the two largest Democrat-led states "who are teaching things that are antithetical to our standards" to ensure newcomers "are not coming into our classrooms and indoctrinating kids," Oklahoma schools Superintendent Ryan Walters, said in an interview with USA TODAY. Walters has dubbed the new requirement an "America First" certification, in reference to one of Trump's political slogans. Oklahoma's Republican Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Walters, a Republican, to the helm of the state's education department in Sept. 2020 and voters then elected him for a second term in November 2022. Oklahoma is offering teaching bonuses that go up to $50,000 to attract teachers from across the nation and has seen "a dramatic increase in teachers wanting to come to Oklahoma," Walters said. The new test is meant to ensure they weed out teachers with opposing views from the state's standards. The state, like many others, has a persisting teacher shortage. He said the test will only apply to teachers from California and New York, for now, because those states specifically teach lessons that are antithetical to those taught in Oklahoma. "A lot of the credit goes to Gavin Newsom," Walters said. He alleged California under the governor has implemented lessons on "gender theory," and that won't be allowed in Oklahoma schools. (The California Healthy Youth Act, passed in 2016, requires that public school lessons across the state "must be inclusive of LGBTQ students" and same-sex relationships and teach students about "gender, gender expression, gender identity, and explore the harm of negative gender stereotypes" and "about all sexual orientations and what being LGBTQ means.") Oklahoma's 'America First' Test Nonprofit conservative media company Prager U is helping Oklahoma's state department of education develop the test. The company previously helped develop the state's new high school history curriculum standards, which includes lessons on how to dissect the results of the 2020 election, including learning about alleged mail-in voter fraud, "an unforeseen record number of voters" and "security risks of mail-in balloting." The new curriculum also teaches the contested theory that COVID-19 emerged from a lab leak and removed a prior proposal for lessons about George Floyd's murder and Black Lives Matter. "These reforms will reset our classrooms back to educating our children without liberal indoctrination," Walters wrote in a post on X on April 29. "We're proud to defend these standards, and we will continue to stand up for honest, pro-America education in every classroom." The state superintendent said some of the history questions will about American government, how the nation came to be and its founding documents. Walters' office shared five sample questions with USA TODAY: Walters said the test will be finished by Aug. 15 and it will be available to prospective teachers the week of Aug. 18. "We're very close," he said. Oklahoma schools have become more has conservative under Walters' took the helm of the state's education department in Sept. 2020, and voters elected him for a second term in November 2022. Along with the changes to the state's history curriculum standards, Walters has ordered public schools to teach the Bible in June 2024. Bible lessons will not be on the new teacher certification exam, he said. Teachers' union leaders: Test will be 'a huge turn off' to teachers amid 'serious teacher shortage crisis' Teachers' union leaders decried the new certification test in interviews with USA TODAY. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said Walters' new test is going to be a "huge turn off" to teachers and that it's not "going to solve a problem." "Teachers in this country are patriotic, and suggesting they're not is insulting," she said. Weingarten went on to criticize Walters for several of his conservative pushes for education in Oklahoma, including bible lessons, and support for a religious charter school, which was blocked by a split Supreme Court vote this May. She called those moves and the implementation of the new test "a major distraction." "Ryan Walters appears to be trying out for MAGA in chief, not educator in chief, because everything that he's doing is about the culture wars, not about the reading, writing and arithmetic," she said. "If he wants to be MAGA in chief then go be MAGA in chief. But let someone else be educator in chief and focus on other things people deserve, which is reading, literacy and wraparound services – and actual teachers who want to be in Oklahoma." Oklahoma and California teachers union leaders agreed. "This is a political stunt to grab attention," said Cari Elledge, president of the Oklahoma Education Association. "All of the mandates coming out of the Department of Education are baseless and are distractions from real issues in Oklahoma." One of those pressing issues is "the serious teacher shortage crisis," she said. "When political ideology plays into whether or not you can teach in any place, that might be a deterrent to quality educators attempting to get a job ... We think it's intentional to make educators fearful and confused." The political climate in Oklahoma has contributed to the teacher shortage, she said, noting there are about 30,000 teachers in Oklahoma who hold state teaching certifications but are not working in classrooms. "We believe the political morale is making it scarier to teach," she said. "We know our jobs are so much more important and at the end of the day it's about the future of our students." The state teachers union told its members in a July 11 letter, which Elledge provided to USA TODAY, that Walters "has no legal authority to vet certified teachers based on political ideology." They say that's because "licensing and certification are governed by state statute, not personal opinion or partisan preferences" and state law "requires us to recognize out-of-state teaching credentials." The letter references part of the state education code that says it "must issue certificates to qualified teachers from other U.S. states and territories if they meet basic requirements, including a criminal background check." The union is also concerned about the state education department's partnership with PragerU "because it's not an educational authority and it's partisan," Elledge said. "OEA is actively monitoring this and other overreaches," the letter reads. "We remain vigilant in protecting the rights of Oklahoma's educators and students." Teachers in Oklahoma don't teach newly implemented conservative ideologies in classrooms, which are expected to be on the 'America First' certification test, Elledge said. "They're not here to give opinions in class; they're here to teach facts," she said. There are not many teachers in Oklahoma who come from California or New York, anyway, because of political differences. "People in Oklahoma have more conservative values," she said. "It's not a destination state for people from California and New York, which is sad because it's a really good place and students here deserve the best they could possibly have." David Goldberg, president of the California Teachers' Association, said he also hasn't heard of an influx of teachers who want to move from California to teach in Oklahoma. But at a time when states are trying to solve teacher shortages, the Oklahoma test is trying to "scare them away," he said. "This almost seems like satire and so far removed from my research around what Oklahoma educators need and deserve," he said. "I can't see how this isn't some kind of hyper-political grandstanding that doesn't serve any of those needs." Goldberg rejects that what teachers need in California – "respect" and a livable wage – is different than what Oklahoma teachers need to thrive.
