Brazilian judge warns Bolsonaro over viral speech on social media
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited posts on X, Instagram, and Facebook containing Bolsonaro's remarks as evidence of a breach. 'Delivered a speech to be shown on digital platforms,' Moraes stated, demanding clarification from Bolsonaro's lawyers within 24 hours or face 'immediate imprisonment.'
Bolsonaro, currently under electronic monitoring, denied wrongdoing, calling the judge's actions 'cowardice.' Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump criticized Brazil's authorities, labeling the case a 'witch hunt' and imposing visa sanctions on Moraes. - AFP

Anwar: Fatwa institutions must act collectively, guided by experts
KUALA LUMPUR: Fatwa institutions must operate collectively and ensure that any religious edict is based on information gathering and in-depth analysis by qualified experts, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post last night, Anwar said the matter was among those discussed during his meeting with the Penang State Fatwa Committee, led by Penang Mufti Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Sukki Othman. "The responsibility of issuing fatwas is a noble and vital duty in providing clarity on religious rulings for the understanding of the ummah. The ummah needs fatwas that are in line with local realities and the current era, in addition to developing new skills in dealing with contemporary issues and challenges for the benefit of society," he said. In the same post, Anwar said he and members of the Penang State Fatwa Committee also exchanged views on the development of Islamic scholarship, particularly in matters related to fiqh, maqasid syariah, and efforts to strengthen fatwa-related research. - BERNAMA

Channel excess Sara funds to education and health sectors now, says Dr Wee
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has reiterated his call for the government to channel extra funds from Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to the education and health sectors. The MCA president noted that there are those who will need funds for surgery or to enter a public university. "Those waiting 21 months for surgery still have to wait another five months just to reach the end of this year? "Students waiting for scholarships to enter public university (offer via open channels not UPU) or matriculation have to wait until next year to apply again?" "Why keep the patients and students waiting?" he asked in a Facebook post on Wednesday (July 23). He was referring to the RM100 Sara cash aid that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for Malaysians aged 18 and above earlier on Wednesday. Dr Wee had earlier said those who do not need the RM100 should be able to opt out. He proposed redirecting the money to critical sectors like supporting public hospitals and awarding scholarships to deserving students, instead of using it for what he described as populist measures. "Rather than spending public money on populist measures that may benefit those who don't really need it, wouldn't it be better to support those who genuinely do, while also upgrading our healthcare and education systems?" he said. Dr Wee had also questioned how the government would utilise unclaimed money returned at the end of the year.
