Brazilian judge warns Bolsonaro over viral speech on social media

The Sun22-07-2025
BRASÍLIA: A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has warned former president Jair Bolsonaro of possible imprisonment after his speech was widely shared on social media, violating a court-imposed ban. The far-right leader, accused of plotting a coup against successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, delivered the address, which was later posted by his allies and family.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited posts on X, Instagram, and Facebook containing Bolsonaro's remarks as evidence of a breach. 'Delivered a speech to be shown on digital platforms,' Moraes stated, demanding clarification from Bolsonaro's lawyers within 24 hours or face 'immediate imprisonment.'
Bolsonaro, currently under electronic monitoring, denied wrongdoing, calling the judge's actions 'cowardice.' Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump criticized Brazil's authorities, labeling the case a 'witch hunt' and imposing visa sanctions on Moraes. - AFP

US imposes sanctions on Brazilian high court judge

Brazil's Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes talks during Brazil's Supreme Court trial over an alleged coup attempt, in Brasilia, Brazil June 9, 2025. REUTERS/Diego Herculano/File Photo (Reuters) -The United States imposed sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday, accusing him of authorizing arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppressing freedom of expression. Moraes oversees the criminal case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been charged with plotting a coup. U.S. President Donald Trump has tied new tariffs on Brazil to what he called a "witch hunt" against his right-wing ally. The announcement by the U.S. Treasury Department follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement in June saying that Washington was considering sanctioning the judge. Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. to impose economic penalties against foreigners it considers to have a record of corruption or human rights abuses. "Moraes has investigated, prosecuted, and suppressed those who have engaged in speech that is protected under the U.S. Constitution, repeatedly subjecting victims to long preventive detentions without bringing charges," the Treasury Department said in a statement. Moraes recently ordered Bolsonaro to wear an ankle bracelet and stop using social media over allegations he courted the interference from Trump. India committed to 'fair, balanced' trade with US

NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday said it was committed to negotiating a "fair, balanced" trade deal with Washington, after US President Donald Trump said Indian goods would face steep tariffs and New Delhi would be penalised for purchases of Russian weapons and energy. Months of trade negotiations between India and the United States have failed to seal a deal, with sticking points including Trump's sweeping demands and New Delhi's reluctance to fully open its agricultural and dairy sectors. Two days before Trump's August 1 tariffs deadline, the US president announced that imports from India would be hit with a 25 per cent tariff. The Indian government said it had "taken note" of Trump's announcement and was "studying its implications". "India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months. We remain committed to that objective," it said in a statement, also noting that it was determined to protect the welfare of Indian farmers and entrepreneurs. "The Government will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements including the latest Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK." - AFP

GENERAL SHAH ALAM, July 30 (Bernama) -- The Kita Selangor Rail project has progressed to the stage of finalising financing strategies and identifying suitable investment partners. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this phase is meant to ensure the integrated rail network can be implemented sustainably to provide maximum benefits to the people. 'The goal of this rail project is to create a modern, seamless, and user-friendly network that connects key areas across Selangor, including a direct link to the Selangor Aero Park in Sepang, which is being developed as a future hub for aviation and logistics. 'It will also ease traffic congestion and enhance economic growth by facilitating workforce mobility and investment,' he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, Amirudin chaired a meeting with the State Economic Planning Unit and the project's appointed consultant, HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd, to discuss potential collaborations on the project. The Kita Selangor Rail project is a long-term plan by the Selangor government to enhance the state's public transportation network. Amirudin emphasised that the Selangor government is committed to strengthening the public transportation ecosystem by making it more integrated and extending its reach to suburban and rural areas, ensuring fair and inclusive access for all residents. 'Thank you to all parties involved for the insights and expertise shared. This is a vital first step towards a more sustainable rail system for a progressive, prosperous and livable Selangor,' he said. When tabling the 2024 State Budget, Amirudin announced that development of the Kita Selangor Rail project would begin with a feasibility study, backed by an allocation of RM3 million.
