KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — The driver of a four-wheel drive involved in a collision yesterday with a couple riding a high-powered motorcycle has been arrested and remanded for two days.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the 32-year-old man was detained after a report was lodged at 6.55pm the same day.
Zamzuri said the 53-year-old motorcyclist sustained a fractured collarbone and ankle injuries, while his 49-year-old wife suffered serious injuries.
'The pillion rider sustained a broken ankle, fractured ribs and bleeding in the brain. Both victims are currently receiving treatment at Hospital Sungai Buloh,' he said in a statement today.
The accident occurred at 2.30pm near the Duta Toll Plaza, heading towards the city centre, when the 4WD driver attempted to overtake another motorcycle but collided with the couple's bike instead.
'The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving,' he added.
A one-minute video clip of the 4WD fleeing the scene after hitting the couple went viral on social media earlier. — Bernama

Bersatu's Hilman Idham to face charge over video remarks on political arrests

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham is set to face prosecution tomorrow over remarks made at a protest last month. According to the Royal Malaysia Police's Classified Crimes Unit, the Gombak Setia assemblyman will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements deemed likely to cause public alarm. The charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest here, in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. The offence is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Bersatu responded to the news by condemning the plan to prosecute Hilman and alleging it to be political intimidation.

Police remands 51-year-old man over TikTok video claiming Zara Qairina's death was murder

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Police have remanded a 51-year-old man from August 19 to 21 for allegedly spreading false information on TikTok about the death of student Zara Qairina. The suspect, believed to be behind the account @berjuanguntukzara, was arrested on Monday night. Police also seized a mobile phone said to have been used in the case. The video in question, titled 'Revealing Zara's post-mortem findings', went viral on August 15 and contained an audio recording that described her death as a planned murder. Police said the two-minute clip misrepresented the facts of the ongoing investigation. Police said the case is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements likely to cause public alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network services. The Attorney General's Chambers has already decided that an inquest will be held into Zara's death, police added. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar urged the public not to spread rumours or manipulate facts that could cause fear, disrupt court proceedings or jeopardise investigations. 'Firm action will be taken against anyone found deliberately spreading false information,' he said. Police also reminded the public to verify the accuracy of information found on social media, especially on issues concerning security, harmony and national unity.

Man nabbed over TikTok claim Zara Qairina was murdered

Bukit Aman CID chief M Kumar said the suspect was arrested at 10.20pm yesterday. (PDRM pic) PETALING JAYA : A 51-year-old man has been arrested by police over a TikTok video which allegedly contains false statements regarding investigations into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the video – which is more than two minutes long – involved a conversation regarding the findings of the autopsy on Zara. 'Preliminary checks found that the video contained false statements regarding investigations into Zara's case because it described her death as being a premeditated murder,' he said in a statement. Kumar said the man was arrested at 10.20pm yesterday, and that a handphone had been confiscated. The suspect is under remand until Thursday. He is being probed for sedition, improper use of network facilities and making statements with the intention of causing, or that may lead to, public alarm. Kumar warned the public against spreading rumours or manipulated facts concerning Zara's death, pointing out that an inquest was set to be held. He also advised the public to verify the information they came across on social media. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day. Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying. Five minors are set to be charged tomorrow over the alleged bullying.
