Raymond van Barneveld slams 'madness' darts schedule as Dutch legend admits he can't keep pace
Tired Raymond van Barneveld says he simply now can't keep up with the madness of the darts schedule.
The Dutch legend has returned from one retirement to get back onto the PDC scene and is still winning games at the age of 58. But multiple World Champion Barney accepts the sands of time are running as low as the energy levels as he considers taking a fresh step back from the gruelling programme.
He said: 'Starting next year, I really need to slow things down. It's all becoming a bit too much. Maybe cut back on the Pro Tours I'll keep playing the Euro Tours as long as I'm in the top 16. But let's be honest, the schedule is madness.
"It barely leaves any time to rest. I've been doing this for 40 years now and I still love it. When you're up there warming up and hear the crowd, it gives you an incredible feeling of pride.
"But, while the mind is still willing, the body doesn't always follow. That's the tough part.'
Competition becomes fiercer each week with the likes of Luke Littler and Luke Humphries lifting the standards and he continued: 'I do struggle with that. It takes a lot of mental energy. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep going.
"At some point, you have to be honest with yourself. I have amazing sponsors, great people supporting me, but I'm also 58. I still love it and I hope I can keep going for as long as possible.
"But, like I said, the mind still wants it, the body not always.'

Rangers want £25m for star with four clubs interested
The Belgian midfielder's start to the season hasn't been plain sailing with manager Russell Martin dropping him for games against Viktoria Plzen and Dundee. But he worked his way back into the XI after impressing off the bench, and still has a run of form from last season as credit in the bank. That led to transfer speculation and the player has previously admitted to an ambition of playing in the English Premier League. And a list of clubs are said to still be interested. Voetbal Primeur reports Wolves are among the frontrunners for the 24-year-old after closely tracking him over the summer. Aston Villa, Brighton and Fiorentina are also named. Read more: It is claimed Rangers will seek a club record sale of £25m for the Belgium international with Standard Liege due 20 per cent of the profit the Ibrox club make on the £1.5m they paid. Former Rangers interim boss Barry Ferguson recently said he would be looking for at least £15m for Raskin. He said: "Nico can play in the Premier League all day long. "I worked with him for three months. He has all the attributes and is still at a brilliant age. "He still has some things he needs to tidy up on, but he understands that. He's got an opinion which I liked. "He's really interested and keen to learn. All day long he can play in the Premier League. Now, Rangers have got to be looking for big money for Nico. I am looking at £15million at least for Nico - and the rest!"

Cyriel Dessers transfer update as ‘long-time suitors still in for Rangers striker and move can't be ruled out'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CYRIEL DESSERS looked certain to leave Rangers earlier in the transfer window. But while it's all gone a little quiet, it's being reported that a move to Greece should NOT be ruled out. 2 Cyriel Dessers has regained his Rangers spot Credit: Kenny Ramsay 2 The striker was injured against Viktoria Plzen Credit: Willie Vass Dessers, 30, was heavily linked with a move to Greek Super League outfit AEK Athens during the early weeks of the window. Several reports coming out of the country had it as good as a done deal, with a number claiming that personal terms had been agreed - but crucially that a fee between the clubs hadn't been. Speaking early last month, Rangers boss Russell Martin confirmed a bid had been received for Dessers but said it was "nowhere near out valuation at the football club." Martin didn't confirm whether AEK Athens were indeed the club to have made a move. Dessers was injured at the time of Martin's comments but has since recovered and regained his place in the Rangers side. He scored from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying a couple of weeks ago. Dessers started the second leg in midweek too but went off after suffering what appeared to be a nasty injury. He missed Saturday's Premier Sports Cup win over Alloa but Rangers hope he'll be ready to face Club Brugge on Tuesday. While exit talk surrounding Dessers has gone a little quiet, a fresh report claims that AEK Athens ARE still interested in signing the striker. Journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos says they're still in for him. Billy Dodds on turning down Celtic for Rangers and surviving relegation scare with Aberdeen His report in Greek outlet Sportime claims that 'everything is open' with regards the club's pursuit of Dessers - especially now that his injury suffered during the week isn't as bad as first feared. The report says AEK Athens 'still have a lot to do' in the transfer market and that bringing in a striker remains a priority. But for someone to be signed, it's claimed AEK will need to move someone on. The report adds that a move for Dessers 'should not be ruled out.' AEK Athens' interest in Dessers looked to be over when they landed a new striker earlier this month. They signed former Real Madrid frontman Luka Jovic on a permanent deal from AC Milan back on August 5. But it seems they COULD still be heading back in for Dessers after all. Five Celtic transfers that could be completed before final Champions League squad deadline
Despite naming their squad to UEFA two changes can be made before facing FC Kairat Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has made little secret of his demands for new recruits this summer. And with the countdown on to the Champions League play-off tie with Kairat Almaty time is rapidly running out to add new faces for the £40million shoot-out. The Glasgow giants will look to return to Europe's elite competition and the jackpot that comes with reaching the league phase. And while Celtic have already announced their squad the Hoops have the chance to add up to two players by next Tuesday before the first leg the following night - and remove two of the current crop. Despite offering a prickly response to another transfer probe following the win over Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup, Rodgers insisted he was hopeful that new additions would be in the door before the clash with the champions of Kazakhstan. A new winger is high up on the shopping list following the departure of Nicolas Kuhn while Jota remains sidelined. Michel-Ange Balikwisha remains an option with Royal Antwerp open to a deal for the wide man who is in the final year of his contract. However, his agent has revealed Celtic must make the first move while the club will reportedly sell as soon as the £4.7million price tag is met. That would see the club recoup the fee they paid Standard Liege for the star back in 2021 Cagliari's Adam Obert is also said to be attracting interest from Celtic and in Germany with a £6million price tag has been placed on the 22-year-old. Gazzetta dello Sport report that a move could materialise quickly for the wide man with his destination "far from certain" with initial offers expected imminently from the likes of Bundesliga side Heidenheim. Andy Irving has been touted with a £3.5million West Ham exit and The People state that the Premier League side will left the Scot leave London 'for the right price.' Former England international Paul Robinson thinks a quick-fire departure could be in motion for the 25-year-old. Robinson told The Inside Track: 'From the player's point of view, he's at that stage in his career. "He's gone to West Ham where he's not really had that much game time and he's going to want to play. "I think he's a really good player, there's a top player in there, and he's one of these players who will get better if he plays regularly and plays every week. 'A move away from West Ham seems the only option if he's going to get that. The way Graham Potter rotates his side and changes players, it doesn't look like he's going to get much game time. "Potter wants to rejuvenate his squad, and Celtic are looking at him, so that could be one we see get done in the next week or so.' A striker is also on the agenda - and the option to make a move for Cluj's Louis Munteanu is alive as Rodgers' looks to find a rival for Adam Idah. Celtic reportedly had a £6.9million bid booted out for the Romania striker earlier in the window - with the Cluj president Nelu Varga insisting theclub they were holding out for around £18million. Munteanu refused to play in last week's Europa League defeat to Braga, according to reports, with Stade Rennes also chasing a deal. Cluj claimed that the forward was injured but reports suggest that the striker has rebelled over a missing payment. Varga has now been warned by agent Giovanni Becali that he may have to cash in urgently - and accept much less than his personal price tag - as his fee will plummet if the star refuses to plan. He said: "Nelutu Varga has already taken part of those 18 million from Louis Munteanu. He took the down payment and will take another instalment in the winter. They said 'let's let him play with you because he can make a living'." And while firepower has been the demand from boss Rodgers, he could still bolster his backline before the crucial Champions League playoff. Le Havre defender Etienne Youte has already admitted he is awaiting the right club for his next move this summer after entering the final year of his contract. L'Equipe suggest the Scottish Premiership champions have joined Anderlecht and Besiktas in the race to land the 23-year-old - with the Ligue 1 outfit ready to accept a €5million (£4.3million) fee this summer.
