PENAMPANG: The call for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to contest the upcoming state elections independently was a key message during the first joint convention between Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) at KDCA Hall on Saturday. PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam warned against breaking away from GRS, saying a PBS-Star alliance alone lacked the numbers to form government. He said GRS remained Sabah's best chance for local political leadership, urging members to unite behind the coalition for the sake of stability and progress. Joachim expressed confidence in GRS contesting seats in Sulabayan, Semporna and Sungai Sibuga, while calling on youth to step up and lead efforts at the grassroots level. Star president Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan said Sabah has long been divided by external interests and that the coming polls should focus on reclaiming the Sabah agenda. He spoke of historical grievances, including Sabah's perceived loss of status since Malaysia's formation, and called on Sabahans to revisit and understand their constitutional rights under MA63. Responding to allegations linking him to a mining scandal, Jeffrey denied wrongdoing and urged voters to treat the election as a referendum on returning political power to Sabahans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan confident in going solo: Shafie

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Johan Aziz Text Size: 'Warisan will stand on its own. I am confident that this party can govern with the support of the people,' Shafie said, after receiving 800 membership forms, here. KENINGAU: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal reiterated that his Parti Warisan Sabah will only work with the people and not with other parties in the coming state election. 'Warisan will stand on its own. I am confident that this party can govern with the support of the people,' he said, after receiving 800 membership forms, here. Advertisement He said if two previous Sabah governments managed to rule Sabah for two terms, Warisan can do so, too. 'Parti Jelata Rakyat Sabah (Berjaya) led by Tan Sri Harris Salleh and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) led by Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan could rule for 10 years even though solo previously. 'We need to work with the people, listen to the people. If we join a coalition, our government will have many policies, many plans, many implementations that will depend on the needs of the coalition, not the needs of the people. Shafie said based on his experience, coalitions do not last long. He also said Warisan would continue to struggle for adherence to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) if the party is given the mandate. He claimed that Warisan was the first to bring the MA63 issue to Parliament in 2019 through the late VK Liew to change what is contained in article 2 and article 1 regarding the position of Sabah and Sarawak. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Another Assembly sitting possible, says Masidi

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Masidi delivering the Chief Minister's speech at the award ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: There is room for another State Legislative Assembly sitting before the state elections due later this year, said Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He stressed the need to table the 2026 State Budget to ensure continuity of government operations. Advertisement 'The budget can be presented either before or after the 17th State Election. But it must be tabled to avoid disruptions to government services early next year. 'For example, we must ensure civil servants are paid and government programmes can proceed as planned. 'Even if elections are called early, there is still enough time to table the budget in November as usual. 'However, if the assembly is dissolved later, we believe we still have a window in December to convene and table the budget before the year ends so there are no hiccups,' he told reporters. On Sabah's fiscal negotiations with the federal government, Masidi acknowledged that both parties have laid their positions clearly. 'Sabah has put its cards on the table, what we want and what we expect. Likewise, the federal government has also presented their side. 'Leaders like Fadillah and Jeffrey have already given their statements. What has been agreed so far will be brought back for respective internal deliberations before both sides return to find mutually acceptable solutions,' he said. Masidi said while Sabah understands the complexity of federal-state fiscal issues, the state will not compromise on what is already enshrined in the Constitution. 'As far as Sabah is concerned, we stand by our previous statements. What is constitutionally provided for cannot be compromised. Sabah deserves to get what it is entitled to,' he said. He acknowledged that the current economic climate does not lend itself to 'a generous attitude' from the federal side. Meanwhile, Masidi said the 'Most Outstanding State' award, while prestigious, is not a declaration that Sabah has already achieved excellence but an acknowledgement of the state government's tireless efforts to move Sabah toward a level of development that had long been elusive. 'What was recognised was not that we've reached the peak, but the commitment and progress made by the government to bring Sabah to a level we have always struggled to reach,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Umno leaders ignorant of MA63: Ruslan

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Ruslan criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. PAPAR: Umno's Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan should not belittle the 'Sabah for Sabahan' (S4S) slogan by equating Sabah to other states in Malaysia when the Malaysia Agreement clearly held that both Bornean states are partners and not states of Malaya. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Ruslan Muharam said that S4S symbolises the aspirations of the people of Sabah who want to see the state progress and prosper under the leadership of its own people, while still valuing cooperation with the Federal Government. Advertisement 'S4S is a reflection of reality, not mere political rhetoric. It embodies the spirit of Sabahans' struggle for their rights and privileges as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' Ruslan said during the launch of the G-NIUS e-Tuition programme. He stressed that Ahmad should be more aware and respectful of Sabahans' sensitivities, and not undermine S4S, which represents the rights and dignity of the people of Sabah. Ahmad, who is also the Head of Umno's Central War Room Secretariat, recently said that the slogan 'Malaysia for Sabah' (M4S) is more inclusive than S4S. The Pontian MP argued that M4S implies that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but are part of a greater Malaysian identity shared with the other 14 states. In response, Ruslan reiterated that Sabah is not just a state but one of the three founding regions of Malaysia, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, under the MA63 agreement. Ruslan, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. 'Sabah is a region, not an ordinary state. Its status is unique and special, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, in forming this country as stipulated in MA63, in line with the 2022 constitutional amendment. Therefore, all parties should acknowledge this fact, and respect the history and spirit of the agreement which laid the foundation of modern-day Malaysia,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
