Yahoo10-07-2025
The Los Angeles Lakers are accustomed to being the center of attention, but they'll share the spotlight with a rising star on Wednesday night. The Lakers are set to face the Dallas Mavericks in the opening night of the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League.
The Mavericks are led by former Duke star Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick in last month's NBA Draft and a player many believe will be a future superstar. The Lakers have star power of their own, headlined by Bronny James ahead of his second NBA season.

James played sparingly as a rookie, but showed signs of growth and potential in his time with the Lakers' G-League affiliate.
The son of NBA legend LeBron James gave a rare glimpse into his life off the court with a recent Instagram comment, confirming his relationship with Parker Whitfield.
The two attended the same high school, Sierra Canyon in California and were spotted together supporting Team USA in the men's basketball tournament at last year's Olympic games in Paris.
James isn't the only one in the relationship with famous family members. Parker Whitfield's mother is Salli Richardson-Whitfield, a veteran actress known for films like "A Low Down Dirty Shame" and television shows like "Eureka."

Her father is Dondre Whitfield, a fellow actor known for roles on "All My Children" and the "Cosby Show."
Whitfield attends the historic Spelman College in Atlanta. Former graduates from the school include politician Stacey Abrams, television host Shaun Robinson and Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Lakers will carry familiar faces with James into the Summer League, including fellow second-year player Dalton Knecht. They'll be joined by former college stars like RJ Davis, Sir'Jabari Rice and Julian Reese - brother of the WNBA's Angel Reese.
Los Angeles will continue their Summer League journey against the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, before games against the rival LA Clippers and Boston Celtics on Monday and Thursday respectively.

After spending a year in the NBA, we'll see what James has to show against one of the most anticipated prospects in league history in Flagg.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves names his greatest player of all time

During his Asian tour, Austin Reaves, who has played 4 seasons with Lebron, was asked who his GOAT BRYANT was his a drafted player who has survived The Lebron Process, Reaves is a rarity.🫡 to comrade, @AltcoinHuckster, for the footage Austin Reaves' future with the Los Angeles Lakers past this coming season may be in a little doubt since he can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer. But at least for now, he's a big part of the Lakers, and he may still have some upward potential. He's relatively slow and unathletic by NBA standards, and at 6-foot-5 and roughly 200 pounds, the undrafted guard has trouble defending bigger, taller wings when he switches onto them on defense. But he averaged 20.2 points and 5.8 assists this past season and started playing at arguably an All-Star level. During a recent Asian tour with Rigorer, the sneaker company he's involved with, Reaves was asked who his greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.) is, and he said it's late Lakers great Kobe Bryant. During his legendary 20-year NBA career, Bryant eventually became massively popular in China. He often gets left out of the top tier of basketball greats by pundits, but at the same time, a number of NBA players, past and present, have said they consider him one of the five greatest players ever. For instance, Shaquille O'Neal, Bryant's former teammate and supposed enemy, put the "Black Mamba" second on his list of the greatest players in NBA history. Reaves has been nicknamed "Hillbilly Kobe" due to his Middle America roots (he grew up in a very small town in Arkansas). He has talked about being a fan of Bryant in the past, and in fact, his grandmother was also a huge fan of the Hall of Famer. By adopting Bryant's "Mamba Mentality," perhaps Reaves can continue to elevate his game and become a huge part of a Luka Doncic-centric Lakers team for many years to come while helping it win at least one NBA championship.

Rockets' Kevin Durant Facing Significant Pay Cut in Next Contract

Rockets' Kevin Durant Facing Significant Pay Cut in Next Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It is not likely that anyone will be shedding a tear for newly minted Rockets star Kevin Durant as he heads into the final year of his contract, a deal that paid him $195 million in total and will give him $54 million in its fourth and final year. Durant is getting old, no doubt, with his 37th birthday looming next month, but no one is expecting to see him in the bread line anytime soon. But there has been new speculation around what, exactly, Durant can expect from his next deal, whether it is an extension with Houston or a new contract in free agency next summer. It's unlikely he wants to go to unrestricted free agency in the summer--most of the teams with cap space are rebuilding outfits--but Durant if he works out a new deal with the Rockets, it is unlikely it will be for a max deal. How much would it be? Well, NBC Sports' Kurt Helin cites a source giving some parameters: "One source who spoke to NBC Sports during Summer League suggested KD might dip to about the $100 million mark for two years, around $10 million a season below the max but still $50 million a season. " Kevin Durant Not a Certainty for a Rockets Extension That's a pay cut, a rarity for a player of Durant's caliber at a time when the NBA salary cap consistently is on the rise. Durant has averaged 26 or more points every year for the last seven seasons, and gets his points efficiently--he's a career 50.2% shooting who makes 39.0% of his 3s. But it's not all that much of a cut, and if Durant is willing to take a short deal, he can likely remain near the NBA max, even if below it. From this week's "Hoops Collective" podcast with ESPN NBA reporters, Tim MacMahon said, "By all appearances and by what I've heard, they're not going all in on an extension for Kevin Durant. Now, doesn't mean it won't happen, but there've been rumblings of KD not going to push for the full max. I don't know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that's close to the max.' Now, $50 million per year is close to the max the Rockets could offer on a per-year basis, and they could well agree to that. But they're not going to extend Durant for much longer than two years. Bobby Portis shuts down rumors on Giannis Antetokounmpo's Bucks exit

Bobby Portis shuts down rumors on Giannis Antetokounmpo's Bucks exit originally appeared on The Sporting News Bobby Portis recently opened up about what he thought about the rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks. Antetokounmpo has been on the rumor mill for quite some time now, especially after the Bucks' second consecutive early playoff exit. During the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the first round, with Giannis missing the entirety of the series. Come the 2025 playoffs, Antetokounmpo was ready to make up for lost time as he made his postseason return. Unfortunately for the Bucks, they once again lost to the Pacers, making another first-round exit. Given the circumstances, many rumors have spread regarding Antetokounmpo wanting a change of scenery. During this season, some NBA teams have allotted a budget for a potential Giannis trade. However, Antetokounmpo himself has neither confirmed nor denied his potential Bucks exit. In a recent broadcast of ESPN Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo's teammate, Portis, made a guest appearance to provide insider information regarding the Bucks. One of the most intriguing questions asked by the hosts was about the rumored Giannis exit. Based on Portis' response, it seems Antetokounmpo has no intentions of leaving Milwaukee. "I talk to Giannis all the time. That's my teammate," Portis said. "I think Giannis bleeds green that's all I can say." Despite these claims made by Portis, it wouldn't be surprising if Antetokounmpo decided to leave in the near future. Damian Lillard made his return to the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this offseason. While the Bucks did acquire Myles Turner this summer, there might be some chemistry issues given the similarity of playstyles Giannis has with him.
