Sarawak business group hails 13MP aims to boost state growth, clean energy
Its secretary general Libat Langub ( pic ) welcomed the special emphasis on elevating Sabah and Sarawak as Malaysia's competitive regional hubs for sustainable energy.
"The initiative includes the development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, aimed at strengthening the energy infrastructure in Sarawak.
"This demonstrates the Federal Government's commitment and recognition of Sarawak's significant role in national investments and that Sarawak is poised to realise the country's vision of becoming a high-value regional clean energy leader," he said on Friday (Aug 1).
Libat said the energy hubs were expected to create new high-value jobs for Sarawakians.
"We hope the Dayak business community will actively look for and participate in business opportunities generated by new industries from these energy hubs," he said.
As an indigenous business chamber, DCCI also supported the strengthening of socioeconomic development for Sarawak's bumiputra community under the 13MP.
This includes expanding business opportunities through the provision of commercial premises, access to financing, entrepreneurship training and mentoring programmes to Sarawak bumiputra entrepreneurs.
"In this connection, we urge the government to ensure that access to these business opportunities reaches the targeted group and benefits them.
'A multi-faceted approach involving government initiatives, dedicated programmes and structural support is crucial," Libat said.
He proposed the implementation of outreach strategies to identify and engage potential bumiputra entrepreneurs, particularly in Sarawak's rural areas, as well as monitoring and evaluation of programmes to benefit them.
"Skills training programmes for rural communities must be intensified so that economic growth can be shared inclusively," he added.
Libat also said the 13MP's focus on basic infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity and digitalisation initiatives was timely and much needed to balance development between urban and rural areas.
"Improved road connectivity is a game-changer for rural development in Sarawak, promising substantial economic and social benefits," he said.

The Digital Minister described 13MP as "timely and critical" in strengthening Malaysia's role in the regional digital economy, with plans to attract investments, develop infrastructure, and nurture talent to support the country's digital transformation. "The goal is clear - for Malaysia to become a regional hub for high-tech, eco-friendly data centres," he said in his keynote address at the CloudTech and Data Centre 2.0 Conference on Wednesday (Aug 6). Gobind said cloud infrastructure would be essential to Malaysia's 5G rollout, enabling transformative applications such as smart cities, precision healthcare and autonomous mobility. "To unlock the true potential of 5G, we need ultra-low latency, secure and scalable data centres. "We are not waiting for the future; we are actively building these capabilities now," he said. Between 2021 and 2023, Gobind said Malaysia approved RM114.7bil in data centre and cloud service-related investments, creating over 2,300 high-value jobs. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to achieving the RM3.6bil revenue target for the data centre industry by 2025. On concerns about the environmental impact of data centres, Gobind acknowledged the energy-intensive nature and said the government would improve its efforts to improve environmental sustainability as a result. "As our digital infrastructure expands, so must our commitment to environmental sustainability. It is not simply about lowering emissions, but about raising our standards. "This is why we must push for more green and sustainable infrastructures," he said. He then outlined three key pillars needed to build a future-ready digital ecosystem for the people, which were infrastructure, security and trust, and talent. "Once you have infrastructure like 5G in place, the next step is preparing the country to leverage new technologies, and that starts with data. "To use data effectively, we need computing power - and that's where building data centres is key," he said. Gobind said that in order for people to be able to adopt a new digital-based ecosystem, they must first be convinced of its safety. "It's about awareness, training, upskilling, and reskilling the current workforce - so they can use new technologies to empower themselves. "If AI does impact their jobs, they are trained and ready to move into new areas if needed," he said. Govt targets one million affordable homes under 13MP
PETALING JAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry will accelerate housing reform and construction technology adoption under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), with a focus on building one million affordable homes and integrating housing with public transport systems. Minister Nga Kor Ming said the 13MP sets a clear path for sustainable urban development while ensuring no community is left behind. 'The strategies and initiatives strengthen Malaysia's commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, in line with our role as President of the UN-Habitat Assembly,' he said in a statement yesterday. A key thrust of the plan is the expansion of the industrialised building system (IBS) and building information modelling (BIM) in the construction sector, he said. 'The technologies will reduce costs, waste and project timelines, while improving quality and productivity.' He said widespread use of IBS and BIM will directly support the government's long-term goal of delivering one million affordable homes over the next decade. The ministry will also push for broader implementation of transit-oriented development (TOD) strategies to improve urban mobility and access. 'By integrating affordable housing projects with public transport systems through TOD, we can improve access – especially for the B40 group – to education and employment opportunities.' Nga said the ministry is also developing an integrated housing data repository to ensure housing policies are aligned with the actual needs and affordability levels of the rakyat. On concerns over homeownership security, he said the ministry is reviewing regulations to mandate the handover of strata titles at the point of vacant possession. Efforts to support the urban hardcore poor will continue, including home repair and rebuilding programmes, he added. 'Between 2023 and 2024, the ministry repaired 4,814 homes and built 245 new units, using a total allocation of RM104.4 million. Solid waste management will also be strengthened under the circular economy framework, with improved systems to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency.'

Audit mechanism for additional water tariff adjustments to be key focus in Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: The monitoring and audit mechanism for the additional revenue from water tariff adjustments, which was promised by state water operators for the purpose of repairing and developing water supply infrastructure, will be a key focus of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament portal, the question is being raised by Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) to the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister during Minister's Question Time. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) will ask the Women, Family and Community Development Minister about the number of informal workers in the care economy sector that have been registered by the ministry, as well as the policies and preparations for an aging society. After the session, members of parliament will take part in the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, presented the 13MP under the theme "Reshaping Development," which outlines the country's strategic plans for the period from 2026 to 2030.
