Total of 25 fatalities linked to fires in 2024
Chimneys, flues, hot ashes and soot were the top causes of fires recorded last year.

Blazes started due to malicious intent and rubbish burning also featured highly in the figures published by the Department of Housing and Local Government.
Brigades attended almost 20,000 fires in 2024 across various locations including domestic buildings, industrial facilities, motor vehicles, forest and grassland areas, outdoor rubbish sites, as well as ships and aircraft.
Within homes, fires caused by electrical wiring and electrical equipment, cooking and heating all featured as causes of fire.
Of the 25 deaths last year, 21 were people aged 55 or over.

Keith Leonard, national director for fire and emergency management said: 'My condolences to the families and friends of people who have lost their lives to fires.'
He added: 'I hope that publishing this data will remind all of us of the need for vigilance and the importance of fire prevention and safety measures.'

Mr Leonard encouraged the public to think of older neighbours and relatives, adding: 'The next time you are in their homes, check that they have a working smoke alarm – the most important piece of fire safety equipment for the home.'
The national directorate for fire and emergency management advises at least one smoke alarm is fitted on every level of a home, which should be tested weekly to ensure it can be heard in the bedrooms. The expiry date should also be checked.
The directorate said it is possible to die from smoke inhalation within three minutes and 'the sound of a smoke alarm is the sound that could save your life'.
It also advised people to have an escape plan in the event of the smoke alarm sounding, adding: 'The simplest route is generally the best way out'.

'Today, as I think of him, I think also of each of you, of the shared hardships, the bonds forged, and the legacy you leave.' The late duke, who died aged 99 in 2021, was in Tokyo Bay on board the destroyer HMS Whelp, a warship he served on as second-in-command, when Japanese officials formally signed the surrender on the USS Missouri. The King, who previously spoke publicly about his father's wartime role on the 75th anniversary in 2020, made no mention of Philip in his audio address to the nation on Friday morning marking 80 years on from VJ Day. But he did pay tribute to his mentor and great uncle Earl Mountbatten, who oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India as Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia Command. 'Today, as both our nations mark this anniversary, we acknowledge the respect earned, the lives lost and the enduring friendship that has since taken root.' 'Love locks' being cut from Bristol's Pero's Bridge
Padlocks attached to an historic bridge as romantic gestures are being removed due to fears they are too so-called 'love locks' on Pero's Bridge in Bristol reportedly collectively weigh up to three tonnes, and the process to cut them off began on Monday are thousands of the locks attached by couples to the bridge - which is named after Pero Jones who was enslaved in Bristol in the 18th Century - many with their initials City Council has been approached for comment. Pero's Bridge opened in 1999 and links Queen Square and Millennium Square. It is not yet known what will happen to the padlocks once they are removed. Speaking to the BBC on the bridge, couple Tom Davies and Josh Inoue said the move "makes sense if it's a safety thing"."It's sad though, I hope they came up with another way of preserving it," Mr Davies Inoue said: "You can see a lot of them [the padlocks] are eroded and decaying, but the moment is still there. "Things fade, but memories are forever." The council initially planned to remove the locks before the Bristol Harbour Festival last cleared the bridge of padlocks about 10 years ago - but couples attached new locks and it was covered again within a few years.
