Mr Leonard encouraged the public to think of older neighbours and relatives, adding: 'The next time you are in their homes, check that they have a working smoke alarm – the most important piece of fire safety equipment for the home.'
The national directorate for fire and emergency management advises at least one smoke alarm is fitted on every level of a home, which should be tested weekly to ensure it can be heard in the bedrooms. The expiry date should also be checked.
The directorate said it is possible to die from smoke inhalation within three minutes and 'the sound of a smoke alarm is the sound that could save your life'.
It also advised people to have an escape plan in the event of the smoke alarm sounding, adding: 'The simplest route is generally the best way out'.

Prince Harry's secret tribute to Philip found at VJ Day memorial

The Duke of Sussex paid tribute to his late grandfather Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in a personal letter secretly left at the National Memorial Arboretum. Harry asked a friend to discreetly leave the note and a wreath of red poppies at the Burma Star Memorial in Staffordshire on Friday, following the national VJ Day commemorations attended by the King and Queen, GB News revealed. The letter was placed after Charles and Camilla left to avoid distracting from the service which honoured the sacrifice of Second World War heroes who fought and died in the Pacific and Far East. VJ Day on August 15 marks the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allies following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, ending the six-year-long conflict. Harry, who was thousands of miles away in California, wrote: 'For me, this anniversary carries an added layer of meaning. 'My late grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, served in the Pacific campaign. 'He spoke with quiet humility about those years, but I know how deeply he respected all who stood beside him in that theatre of war. 'Today, as I think of him, I think also of each of you, of the shared hardships, the bonds forged, and the legacy you leave.' The late duke, who died aged 99 in 2021, was in Tokyo Bay on board the destroyer HMS Whelp, a warship he served on as second-in-command, when Japanese officials formally signed the surrender on the USS Missouri. The King, who previously spoke publicly about his father's wartime role on the 75th anniversary in 2020, made no mention of Philip in his audio address to the nation on Friday morning marking 80 years on from VJ Day. But he did pay tribute to his mentor and great uncle Earl Mountbatten, who oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India as Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia Command. Harry's letter, which was addressed to the 'Forgotten Army', said: 'On this 80th anniversary of VJ Day, we pause to remember the day the guns finally fell silent across the world, the true end of the Second World War. 'We also pause to recognise you, the men and women of the 'Forgotten Army,' whose courage and endurance in the Far East campaign were anything but forgettable. 'You faced an enemy determined to the last, fought in unforgiving terrain, and endured months, even years, far from home, in conditions most could scarcely imagine. 'Your service in the jungles and mountains of Burma and beyond was marked by grit, unity, and sacrifice. 'It is because of that sacrifice that generations since, myself included, have been able to live in freedom. 'From the lessons of that bitter struggle came the understanding that even the fiercest of foes can, in time, become valued partners in peace. 'Today, as both our nations mark this anniversary, we acknowledge the respect earned, the lives lost and the enduring friendship that has since taken root.' After his words about Philip, Harry added: 'I am humbled by your example, proud of your service and dedication, and profoundly grateful for what you endured. 'Your story is part of our shared heritage, and it must never be forgotten. With the deepest respect, thank you.' The letter, featuring the duke's cypher of a H under a crown was signed 'Harry', Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. In 2020, the year of Megxit, former soldier Harry was left saddened when he was refused his wish to have a poppy wreath placed at the Cenotaph, the focus of the UK 's Remembrance Sunday service, on his behalf. Just months later, the duke, who undertook two tours to Afghanistan, was stripped of his military patronages by his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II after his decision to step down as a senior working royal was made permanent. Much of the celebration marking the end of the Second World War in 1945 focused on VE (Victory in Europe) Day in May, with those who served in the Far East labelled 'The Forgotten Army'.

Stop spiders from coming into your house with sweet spice you have in your cupboard & it keeps ants out too

BANISH spiders and ants from your home for good, with a sweet spice you probably already have in your cupboard. As we begin to approach autumn, spiders start to leave their homes in search of mates, and often end up entering people's homes for warmth and shelter. 2 2 And although most spiders in the UK are completely harmless, it can be a nuisance when they invade our homes. Strong scent Cinnamon is an extremely pleasant scent for humans, and reminds us of Christmas and cosy evenings by the fire. However, spiders can't stand the smell of it and will be immediately repelled by the odour. Simply sprinkle any areas where you've had a spider problem with the spice and, voila, you will have a spider free zone. You could also place some cinnamon sticks in a tiny bag and place those around the house, for a less messy solution. It is likely that you have cinnamon in the kitchen cupboard already, but if not you can pick some up from Aldi for 89p. More spider busting hacks B&Q's Zero In Spider Repellent Spray is another simple method you can use to keep your home spider free. Priced at £8.98, water based formula comes in a 500ml bottle and a fresh peppermint scent. Beyond getting rid of spiders, the spray also helps to prevent the build-up of cobwebs. According to the product description, the repellent works to rid your home of the pests without the use of harmful chemicals. I'm a plumber and your spider problem could be caused by your toilet It also emphasises that this safe to use spray does not cause any harm to spiders. And for another more natural trick, Pest control expert Doug O'Connor from recommends using vinegar. 'Spiders hate vinegar,' the pro explained, 'The smell is overwhelming to them, and it causes irritation on contact. It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to deter them.' And since most homes will already have a bottle in their kitchen cupboards, this hack is a real bargain. If not, shoppers can pick up a bottle of white vine gar for a little as 35p from Sainsbury's, although it's also available in other supermarkets. The pro added that turning off outside lights helps to stop spiders heading in to your home. It's also a good idea to keep your home clutter-free, so they have nothing to hide behind.

'Love locks' being cut from Bristol's Pero's Bridge

Padlocks attached to an historic bridge as romantic gestures are being removed due to fears they are too so-called 'love locks' on Pero's Bridge in Bristol reportedly collectively weigh up to three tonnes, and the process to cut them off began on Monday are thousands of the locks attached by couples to the bridge - which is named after Pero Jones who was enslaved in Bristol in the 18th Century - many with their initials City Council has been approached for comment. Pero's Bridge opened in 1999 and links Queen Square and Millennium Square. It is not yet known what will happen to the padlocks once they are removed. Speaking to the BBC on the bridge, couple Tom Davies and Josh Inoue said the move "makes sense if it's a safety thing"."It's sad though, I hope they came up with another way of preserving it," Mr Davies Inoue said: "You can see a lot of them [the padlocks] are eroded and decaying, but the moment is still there. "Things fade, but memories are forever." The council initially planned to remove the locks before the Bristol Harbour Festival last cleared the bridge of padlocks about 10 years ago - but couples attached new locks and it was covered again within a few years.
