Man gets 13 months in prison for fatal head-on crash in North Stonington that killed father of 3
A man has been sentenced to more than a year in prison after being convicted of causing a fatal head-on crash in North Stonington in 2021. James Pont, 63, of Ashaway, Rhode Island faced sentencing on Wednesday in New London Superior Court where a judge handed down three years in prison, suspended after service of 13 months, and three years of probation, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice. The sentencing came after a jury on Feb 26 found him guilty on one count of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle. According to DCJ officials, evidence at trial showed that Pont was driving on Pendleton Hill Road on Jan. 18, 2021, at 3:26 p.m. when he crossed the yellow center lines and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 39-year-old Ryan Poland of North Providence, Rhode Island. Poland's 2006 Honda Civic was headed north, and a 1995 GMC Safari driven by Pont was traveling south when the two vehicles collided, according to Courant reporting. The collision occurred near the on-ramp to I-95 at Exit 92. Poland was taken to Westerly Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Pont was seriously injured and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Pont was arrested after an investigation by the Connecticut State Police Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Squad and the Troop E barracks. 'The New London State's Attorney's Office would like to thank C.A.R.S. and Connecticut State Police Troop E for their work in this case,' the DCJ wrote in a statement. 'The New London State's Attorney's Office hopes that this disposition brings some comfort to the family of Mr. Poland.' The case was prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Alexandra N. Aksterowicz, with assistance from Inspector Matthew T. Suplee. According to an obituary, Poland left behind three children. He was raised in Barrington, Rhode Island and had a deep love for fishing and a passion for cooking, music and gardening. He was also a songwriter and a musician, the obituary said. Poland was employed by Jesmac Builders for 18 years, according to the obituary.

Suspects who allegedly attacked woman in McDonald's because of her sexual orientation face hate crime charges
Two males, including one juvenile, are facing hate crime charges after allegedly physically attacking a 19-year-old woman and calling her "derogatory" names at a McDonald's in Illinois, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office. The incident occurred on May 13, when police responded to a report of a fight at a McDonald's in Carpentersville, Illinois, which is about an hour outside of Chicago. Once on the scene, officials determined the incident "involved an aggravated battery against a female victim," Carpentersville Police Department said. The female victim, 19-year-old Kady Grass, told ABC News the attack, which led to her suffering a broken nose and bruises on her shoulders, was based on her sexual orientation. "Even if they don't agree with the LGBTQ community, they have no right to make it physical or bully you into something. There was no right to do this to me just because they didn't like that I date women instead of men," Grass told ABC News last week. One of the suspects involved in the attack, 19-year-old John Kammrad, was arrested on May 17, and the juvenile — whose "identify is being withheld in accordance with state laws protecting minors' privacy" — turned himself in to police on May 16, officials said. On Tuesday, the state's attorney's office announced that Kammrad was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, mob action and a hate crime. The juvenile was also charged with a hate crime, in addition to mob action and aggravated battery charges, prosecutors said. We must make it clear that Kane County is a community that welcomes all," the county State's Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement. Grass said the attack began when she and her 13-year-old cousin were grabbing food at the McDonald's and Grass decided to use the bathroom. Both the restroom stalls were full, so she walked out right away, when one boy out of a group of three began calling her a derogatory name, she told ABC News. She said she "mumbled" under her breath but walked away and told her cousin to "not give them another reason to talk to us." One of the boys, the juvenile who was later charged, approached Grass again, saying they "wanted to fight" her and they should "take it outside," she said. Grass said she then proceeded to go outside the McDonald's, but "no one came out." MORE: Hate crimes, particularly against LGBTQ community, on the rise: FBI data When she returned inside to her cousin, she told Grass she overheard the males and said "they have a gun and they are going to kill you." Grass later found out that it was an "empty threat" as police did not find a gun in the suspects' possession. Kammrad then approached Grass and said, "You're a woman, you're not tough," to which Grass replied: "I know I'm a woman, I'm a lesbian," she told ABC News. She said she then looked at the juvenile, who "had this look in his eyes" and began to smile at her. "I had a bad feeling about what was going to happen," Grass said. Kammrad proceeded to get close to Grass, so she placed her hand on his chest to signal he should "keep his distance," she said. A manager at the McDonald's attempted to break up the fight, but he also "got hit in the process," Grass said. In an attempt to protect herself, Grass closed her eyes and fell to the ground, which led to the two males stomping on her head, causing her to become unconscious, she said. "They were trying to kill me," Grass said last week. She sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where "she was treated and subsequently released," police said. Grass told ABC News Chicago station WLS on Tuesday that she was "fighting really hard for these hate crime charges." Kammrad's plea setting is scheduled for June 27 at 9 a.m., according to court records. He is currently being held in the DuPage County Jail for "separate, unrelated charges," officials said. It was not immediately clear whether Kammrad has appointed an attorney who can speak on his behalf. Danville man sentenced to prison for illegal gun possession, having drugs in jail
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Danville man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in two separate cases — one where he unlawfully possessed a gun and one where he had cocaine while he was in custody. Vermilion County court records show that Tymone Jackson, 39, was charged with a total of 10 counts across two cases that were opened against him last year. On Thursday, he pleaded guilty to two charges in each case — unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a controlled substance in a penal institution. Those are Class 2 and Class 1 felonies, respectively. UPDATE: Body found in Rantoul's Heritage Lake remains unidentified The Vermilion County State's Attorney's Office said that on Oct. 24, 2024, Jackson was driving a car that was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation. The Sheriff's deputy who initiated the traffic stop observed 'suspicious activity' that led to a search of the car and the occupants. Deputies found a loaded handgun, which Jackson was not allowed to have due to a previous conviction. The State's Attorney's Office also said less than two weeks after Jackson's arrest, a Sheriff's investigator received information that drugs were present in the Vermilion County Public Safety Building. Following this lead, Jackson was questioned and searched; the investigator found cocaine concealed on Jackson's person. U of I student, pro-Palestine protestor cleared of felony charge in trial 'This defendant, who was already facing serious charges for illegally possessing a weapon, showed complete disregard for the law by bringing illegal drugs into the Public Safety Building,' State's Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said in a news release. 'Not only was his behavior illegal, but he endangered the security of our correctional facility, staff and inmates.' For these crimes, Jackson was sentenced to 12 years in prison for unlawful possession of a weapon and six years for possession of contraband. Those sentences will be served concurrently.
