Zaliha: KL mayor reviewing proposal to place Pantai Dalam fire victims in PPR
KUALA LUMPUR: The mayor will review a proposal to place Pantai Dalam fire victims in People's Housing Project (PPR) units, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would assess the eligibility of the victims as the fire affected both Malaysians and foreigners. "More than 50 people from 13 families, including locals and foreigners, were affected when a blaze destroyed 14 houses and several business premises. "The victims are now housed at a religious school, but will be moved to a community centre when the new school term begins. "We will look into whether they qualify for temporary housing under DBKL's management. "I have asked the mayor to examine this matter. We will help them as best we can," she said after chairing the first session of the 35th term (2025–2026) of the Federal Territories-level National Youth Consultative Council. Previously, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that long-term assistance would be studied before a coordinated plan was implemented, with DBKL set to meet affected families in the coming days. Zaliha said immediate relief, including basic necessities and compassionate payments, had been provided to the fire victims. "For now, we can only extend initial support in the form of essential supplies and financial aid. "We have received feedback from the victims, who expressed their gratitude to the Fire and Rescue Department, DBKL and the school for their swift action, which brought them comfort." On Friday, a fire broke out at a row of shoplots in Pantai Dalam, near Apartment Pantai Indah. Thick black smoke and flames could be seen billowing from the premises. The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that 14 squatter homes and four shoplots were damaged in the blaze. The department received an emergency call at 11.11pm and despatched 36 firefighters from the Pantai, Hang Tuah, Seputeh and Sri Hartamas fire stations.

Govt reviewing PPR recipients in FT to ensure fairer distribution, says Dr Zaliha
KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government is scrutinising recipients of the People's Housing Project (PPR) in the federal territory to ensure that only deserving applicants benefit and that the needy are not left out. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the number of applicants far exceeded the number of available units. "We are carrying out enforcement measures to verify those who truly deserve a PPR unit. "There are too many applicants, but the number of units available is limited," she said.

DBKL tackles RM70mil arrears, crime and maintenance issues in PPR housing
KUALA LUMPUR: Rental arrears, criminal activity and maintenance issues are among the key concerns affecting residents of the People's Housing Project (PPR) and public housing under the purview of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). City Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the issues were raised during dialogue sessions with residents held earlier today. "Outstanding rental payments involving public housing and PPR have reached RM70 million… DBKL is currently implementing solutions, including the installation of water lock systems, the issuance of notices, and financial advocacy programmes for tenants in arrears, to ensure payments are made. "This is in addition to problems such as drug abuse, waste dumping, lack of parking, and damaged infrastructure," she said after the Safe City Programme at the People's Housing Project in Seri Desa Rejang today. Maimunah said DBKL is also prioritising maintenance issues, especially in buildings managed by management bodies to ensure the quality of life for residents is not compromised. She said DBKL is also exploring the possibility of allowing tenants to purchase their units, especially those who are financially eligible but unable to obtain bank financing. "As for tenants wanting to buy their homes, a freeze was imposed on such purchases in 2015. However, I am reviewing this policy. If they are genuinely capable, we may relook at allowing them to purchase their units. "This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, as some tenants are unable to obtain bank financing," she added. Maimunah said the town hall session with public housing residents is part of the Local Action 21 initiative, which involves collaboration between DBKL, police and the local community in addressing safety and well-being issues in the area. "The presence of DBKL and police in these PPR areas reflects our commitment to work together in enhancing community safety. "This is not a one-off programme as it will continue from one area to another," she said.
