Govt reviewing PPR recipients in FT to ensure fairer distribution, says Dr Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government is scrutinising recipients of the People's Housing Project (PPR) in the federal territory to ensure that only deserving applicants benefit and that the needy are not left out.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the number of applicants far exceeded the number of available units.
"We are carrying out enforcement measures to verify those who truly deserve a PPR unit.
"There are too many applicants, but the number of units available is limited," she said.

Close Ties With Regional Partners Opens Up Various Opportunities Including Agriculture, Dairy

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's close ties with its regional partners, especially within ASEAN, open up broad opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including agriculture and dairy. This is based on the confidence and trust of regional industry partners, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He noted that the success of this sector is also supported by the readiness of the private sector, the resilience of local entrepreneurs, and the integration of modern technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). This, in turn, boosts productivity, strengthens the dairy industry's value chain, and drives modern agricultural innovation. 'Today, I had the opportunity to be with the local community in Pondok Tanjung for the launch of the MADANI Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival, which brings various parties together to drive the nation's dairy industry. 'In my speech, I emphasised that Malaysia is a fortunate country, not only rich in resources but also enjoying close relationships with our regional partners, especially ASEAN,' he said in a Facebook post today. He added that through the MADANI Economy framework, the government, along with the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) and the private sector, will continue to expand regional economic opportunities, create more jobs, strengthen the position of local entrepreneurs, and ensure the fruits of development are enjoyed by the people. 'As an immediate commitment, I also announced an allocation of RM1 million for urgent infrastructure work in the Larut, Matang, and Selama districts.' Earlier, the Prime Minister officiated the MADANI Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival: 'Driving the Modern Agricultural Revolution, Generating the People's Economy' at the Perak Farm Fresh Dairy Complex in Larut.

Justice assured in Zara Qairina case, says PM Anwar

LARUT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that justice will prevail in the case of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir's death. He emphasised that no one involved will evade accountability. Anwar cautioned against attempts to manipulate the case or tarnish individuals' reputations. 'The government has said the police are investigating, and I have made it clear that it doesn't matter who (is involved), they will be investigated,' he said at the MADANI Dairy Entrepreneurs Carnival. The event, themed 'Driving Modern Agricultural Revolution, Generating People's Economy,' was held at the Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and ministers Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Fadhlina Sidek were also present. Anwar highlighted the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable groups like fishermen and farmers. He shared his routine of visiting small eateries weekly to engage with the public. 'I don't want to wait until election campaigns to visit eateries ... I do this every week,' he added. After the event, Anwar inspected the Kamunting-Anak Kurau road project under the Rural Roads Programme. The RM91 million project, approved in 2016, involves constructing a 6.6-kilometre road. It aims to benefit over 5,000 residents and boost local agriculture and economic growth. The project, now 70.5% complete, is ahead of schedule by 59 days. Full completion is expected by Aug 15, 2026. - Bernama

1,000-unit People's Housing Project in Apas awaits approval under 13MP

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Nizam presenting aid to one of the fire victims. TAWAU: A proposed People's Housing Project (PPR) involving 1,000 residential units in the Apas constituency is currently in the approval process, after being submitted in 2023, and is expected to be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the approval is crucial, as the project is expected to benefit up to 5,000 local residents once completed. 'The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), in collaboration with the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), visited the proposed site in the Apas area last year,' he said after distributing humanitarian aid to fire victims at Batu 4, Jalan Apas, on Friday. If approved without delays, the project will become the third PPR development in Apas, which currently houses residents in PPR Sri Titingan and PPR Sri Apas—both fully occupied for years. Nizam, who personally submitted the proposal, noted that Apas is one of Sabah's fire-prone areas, where repeated incidents have left residents homeless. 'Hopefully, this project will be listed as a 13MP agenda item and receive budget approval, as it would also help tackle the squatter settlement problem along the Apas coastline,' he said. He added that such developments are vital for creating a safer, more organised and comfortable living environment, in contrast to the high-risk conditions in densely packed squatter areas. Nizam also expressed confidence in the State Government's understanding of the housing challenges in Apas, and called for more public housing projects in the area or nearby Tawau township. 'This is particularly important for squatter residents living in homes that are tightly clustered and highly vulnerable to fires,' he added. On humanitarian aid, Nizam said assistance was channeled through the Sabah Welfare Foundation (YKS) and the State Internal Affairs and Research Office, benefitting fire victims from two separate incidents in Batu 4, Jalan Apas. The recipients included 10 heads of households (KIR) from Jambatan Cempaka, Kampung Hidayat, and 30 KIR from Kampung Kurnia Jaya. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
