TAWAU: A proposed People's Housing Project (PPR) involving 1,000 residential units in the Apas constituency is currently in the approval process, after being submitted in 2023, and is expected to be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the approval is crucial, as the project is expected to benefit up to 5,000 local residents once completed. 'The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), in collaboration with the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), visited the proposed site in the Apas area last year,' he said after distributing humanitarian aid to fire victims at Batu 4, Jalan Apas, on Friday. If approved without delays, the project will become the third PPR development in Apas, which currently houses residents in PPR Sri Titingan and PPR Sri Apas—both fully occupied for years. Nizam, who personally submitted the proposal, noted that Apas is one of Sabah's fire-prone areas, where repeated incidents have left residents homeless. 'Hopefully, this project will be listed as a 13MP agenda item and receive budget approval, as it would also help tackle the squatter settlement problem along the Apas coastline,' he said. He added that such developments are vital for creating a safer, more organised and comfortable living environment, in contrast to the high-risk conditions in densely packed squatter areas. Nizam also expressed confidence in the State Government's understanding of the housing challenges in Apas, and called for more public housing projects in the area or nearby Tawau township. 'This is particularly important for squatter residents living in homes that are tightly clustered and highly vulnerable to fires,' he added. On humanitarian aid, Nizam said assistance was channeled through the Sabah Welfare Foundation (YKS) and the State Internal Affairs and Research Office, benefitting fire victims from two separate incidents in Batu 4, Jalan Apas. The recipients included 10 heads of households (KIR) from Jambatan Cempaka, Kampung Hidayat, and 30 KIR from Kampung Kurnia Jaya. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fahmi covers relocation costs for Pantai Dalam fire victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembah Pantai MP Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has pledged to cover the relocation costs for 14 families displaced by a recent fire in Pantai Dalam, moving them into Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) People's Housing Project (PPR) units as temporary accommodation. He said the arrangements were finalised following discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif. "All requirements for the relocation have been approved. I visited the 14 families currently staying at the temporary relief centre. Alhamdulillah, in a short time, Dr Zaliha and Datuk Seri Maimunah approved their move into transit homes for those eligible. "Following the approval, my office also received cash contributions from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), which will be distributed to the affected families," he said during his speech at the Arts and Culture Promotion Programme at PPR Kerinchi today. The fire, which broke out around 11pm on Aug 8, destroyed 14 squatter houses and four shop lots, including Mydin Mart and Pasaraya Karnival. Fahmi said DBKL would cover six months' rent for the families, while his office would absorb the cost of the deposits. "I will cover all deposits imposed by DBKL so the families will not need to pay anything. We want to help them rebuild their lives in a supportive environment after their homes were destroyed in the fire," he added.

KDCA urges Murut, Lundayeh communities to stay united under association

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: Suman with the Tenom KDCA communities. TENOM: The Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) has called on the Murut, Lundayeh and other ethnic groups listed in its constitution to remain united under its umbrella, even if their names are not explicitly mentioned in the association's title. Its secretary-general, Datuk Suman Yasambun, said the association's main challenge has been ensuring members understand KDCA's purpose since its founding six decades ago. He explained that KDCA was established to unite local communities in Sabah after the state joined Malaysia, adding that cultural preservation and rights are safeguarded under the association's constitution. Speaking at the handing over of 15 appointment letters to Tenom KDCA community representatives, Suman said the association continues to focus on education, cultural preservation and community development rather than political involvement. He also emphasised KDCA's role in promoting language preservation, women's participation and wider networking opportunities, assuring the Murut and Lundayeh communities that their identities remain protected within the organisation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Focus on community well-being, says Gagasan Rakyat amid tragedy

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Razali speaking to reporters after the prayer session. KOTA KINABALU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has emphasised that its priority is the well-being of the community as the state continues to reflect on the loss of Zara Qairina Mahathir. The party's secretary-general, Datuk Razali Razi, said its focus is on unity, justice and compassion for the 13-year-old's family, while electoral matters remain secondary. On Saturday, some 500 members and supporters gathered at Wisma Muis for a tahlil prayer and Yasin recitation in memory of the late teenager, who passed away earlier this month. Party president and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was represented at the event by his vice president, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd, with Hajiji sending a message encouraging continued prayers and reflection. Razali noted that the inquest into Zara's death will be central to understanding the circumstances, and stressed that support, justice and compassion for the family must guide the response of society. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
