TAWAU: Nearly half of a wood processing factory at Jalan Tanjung Batu Laut was damaged in a fire which broke out at around 6.30pm on Monday. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said the incident occurred at the Hap Seng Sawmill, which occupies a 16,000 square-foot area. Flames were reported to have spread across the factory's rooftop, affecting an estimated 10-by-50-foot section, with about 47 per cent of the structure destroyed. Twenty firefighters from the District's Fire and Rescue Station, led by Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Yahya Abd Fattah were dispatched to the scene. They were joined by Senior Operations Commander Assistant Fire Superintendent Madzlan Sarman, arriving at the site at 6.36pm, about 10 minutes after receiving the emergency call. Firefighters used a two-line method stretching 500 feet with four hose streams sourced from fire engines and the factory's water tanks to bring the blaze under control. Advertisement The swift action prevented the flames from spreading further, avoiding greater damage and losses. No casualties were reported and the operation was called off at 9.07pm after the area was declared safe. The cause of the fire and total losses have yet to be determined pending investigation. Also involved in the operation were six police personnel, seven from the Civil Defence Force (APM), two Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) staff and 10 members of the Titingan Community Firefighting Team. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
