M4S promotes unity while respecting Sabah's rights: Ahmad Maslan

TAWAU: Central Umno war room secretariat chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan says Sabahans are now presented with two major choices in the coming 17th State Election – the nationally-driven 'Malaysia for Sabahans' (M4S) or the autonomy-based 'Sabah for Sabahans' (S4S) agenda. He described S4S as being pushed by local parties prioritising state rights, while M4S promotes a broader national integration approach within the Malaysian federation.
Advertisement Ahmad stressed that M4S champions unity, fairness, and national inclusion without sidelining Sabah's interests and rights. He said that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but also for Malaysia, as the country is shared by 14 states and federal territories. He was commenting on the outcome of his working visit to the State on Wednesday evening and said S4S had a narrower scope compared to M4S. Ahmad added that for Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) to attract other parties in forming a new unity government post-election, it must win all or most of the seats it contests. REUTERS/Yurii Kovalenko KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine's top anti-corruption investigator said on Friday that he did not expect attempts to derail his agency's work to end, despite an abrupt U-turn by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on curbing their independence that fuelled rare wartime protests. Semen Kryvonos, director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), said he was taken aback by attempts this week to curtail his agency's fight against graft but did not name those who may have been behind the legislation. "Everyone united around the idea of ruining our independence," Kryvonos told Reuters in an interview in Kyiv, referring to parliament passing the controversial measures. "This was a shock for me - how much demand had built up to destroy us." He spoke a day after Zelenskiy sought to defuse tensions by submitting legislation restoring the independence of NABU and its sister agency, the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). Thousands of protesters took part in protests in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities this week after lawmakers fast-tracked a bill granting a Zelenskiy-appointed general prosecutor power over the two bodies. The move had also threatened Kyiv's ties with the European Union and Western donors which have been a critical source of financial and military support during Russia's war in Ukraine. Kryvonos applauded Zelenskiy's reversal, but said NABU and SAPO remain a high-priority target for vested interests aiming to stymie their closely watched efforts to clean up. Parliament will consider Zelenskiy's new bill in a special session next week. But Kryvonos worries corrupt actors will step up a "dirty information campaign" already being waged against NABU on widely read anonymous Telegram channels, casting the agency as slow or ineffective. He did not identify the exact sources of resistance to his agency's work, saying only that they are "various representatives of the government, various financial groups". "Everyone who is offended by NABU and SAPO will be pushing out this message," Kryvonos said. 'SYSTEMIC WORK' AND THREATS Since Russia's February 2022 invasion, Ukraine has stepped up a campaign to eradicate the pervasive graft that has plagued its political culture for decades. Stamping out corruption is both critical to Kyiv's bid to join the EU and its effort to erase a legacy of autocracy and Russian rule. NABU and SAPO, launched with Western support after a 2014 revolution toppled a pro-Russian president, have levelled charges against lawmakers and senior government officials. In recent months, Kryvonos's agency has uncovered huge real estate schemes in the capital Kyiv and accused a then deputy prime minister of taking a $345,000 kickback. Kryvonos suggested such efforts had led to a sweeping crackdown this week that paved the way for the rollback of NABU's and SAPO's powers. Two NABU officials were arrested for suspected ties to Russia and nearly 20 other agency employees searched over lesser alleged infractions in a campaign critics said went too far. "All of this was a result of systemic work by NABU and SAPO, especially over the past half-year," he said, adding that he had also received "a huge amount" of threats. Despite winning a hard-fought victory this week, he said resistance was still widespread enough across the political landscape to pose a serious challenge. He cited the controversial law that had been supported by most of Zelenskiy's political party as well as opposition lawmakers and those associated with former pro-Russian factions. Cambodia PM agrees to ceasefire proposed by Anwar
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has agreed to the ceasefire proposal with Thailand suggested by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post today, Manet said he agreed to the ceasefire because Cambodia did not initiate the fighting. "The key to resolving the current armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is the genuine willingness of the Thai side to accept a ceasefire, which is the first step towards finding further solutions between the two countries," Manet said in his posting. Manet clarified that there was unclear reporting by various international media regarding the proposed ceasefire talks initiated by Anwar, the current Asean chair. Manet said he only agreed to the ceasefire after hearing from Anwar that Thailand's acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed to peace talks. But regrettably, the Thai side changed their position on the issue, he said in his posting. "However, it is regrettable that just over an hour later, the Thai side informed that they had reversed their position from agreeing to the ceasefire," said Manet. Anwar said he spoke to both prime ministers on resolving the ongoing conflict on Thursday. The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand escalated after soldiers from both sides engaged in a clash on Thursday morning along the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear areas. The two neighbours have been quarrelling over an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which has harmed diplomatic ties. - Bernama

Thailand open to ceasefire but seeks clarification from Cambodia
BANGKOK: Thailand has no objection to a ceasefire in its ongoing border clashes with Cambodia but is seeking greater clarity on the terms, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said Friday. Phumtham, who is also Interior Minister, said he spoke with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who called on Thursday evening and has offered to act as a mediator for a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand, he said, agrees in principle with the offer but stressed that Cambodia must first demonstrate a clear and sincere commitment. "We have no objection, but for a ceasefire to happen, there must be clarity. We've been trying to achieve this all along, but to no avail," Phumtham said at a press conference on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation on Friday. He revealed that he had asked Anwar to ensure there is a concrete commitment and guarantees that similar incidents would not recur. "Only then can we consider the next steps. For now, our military remains on high alert," he said. On Thursday, Anwar in his capacity as current Asean Chair has called Phumtham and Cambodian Premier Hun Manet, appealing to them for an immediate ceasefire and return to peaceful dialogue to resolve the ongoing border dispute. Anwar said Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of Asean unity and shared responsibility. Thai and Cambodian forces clashed early Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest round of violence. The latest round of hostility followed a skirmish between troops of the two countries near the Preah Vihear area on May 28. A Cambodian soldier was killed in the shootout. The two neighbouring countries have been locked in recurring diplomatic spats over a long-standing border dispute. - Bernama
