Tiruchy honors 108 ambulance pilots on Ambulance Pilot Day for lifesaving service amidst challenging conditions

TIRUCHY: Behind every life saved in an emergency, there is often an ambulance pilot navigating congested roads, flooded streets, or remote villages to reach the patient in time. On Monday, which is observed as Ambulance Pilot Day, three pilots of the 108 ambulance service, Manikandavasagam, Dinesh, and Ravikumar, were honoured by Joint Director of Health Services Dr Gopinath for their dedicated service. Speaking on the occasion, pilot R Dinesh of Thiruverumbur recalled a harrowing rescue at the scene of a bus accident. 'The driver was trapped, passengers were injured, and the situation was chaotic. I pulled the driver out while our technician helped others. It's stressful to drive through heavy traffic during such moments, but saving a life keeps you going,' he said. A Ravikumar from Manachanallur, who has over 11 years of experience, described a case that still stays with him. 'We transported a child who was barely breathing. After days on a ventilator, the child recovered. That moment of seeing the family relieved, it makes every challenge worth it.'

Nissan plans $7bn funding, including loan backed by UK government

Japan's struggling Nissan is considering raising more than ¥1-trillion (R125,794,820,900) from debt and asset sales which would include a syndicated loan guaranteed by the UK government, Bloomberg News said on Wednesday. The country's third-biggest carmaker plans to issue as much as ¥630bn (R78,291,108) worth of convertible securities and bonds, including high-yielding US dollar and euro notes, Bloomberg News said, citing documents it had seen. Nissan is also considering taking out a £1bn (R24,260,850,000) syndicated loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance, the report said. The report said Nissan is also looking at selling part of the stakes it holds in French carmaker and long-standing alliance partner Renault and in battery maker AESC Group, and plants in SA and Mexico. Representatives for Nissan and UK Export Finance did not respond to a request for comment. Bloomberg News cited sources as saying Nissan's board did not appear to have approved the funding proposal yet, leaving it unclear whether it would happen. The proposal was also slated to include the rollover of some debt, the report said. Earlier this month, the company presented a sweeping cost-cutting plan under which it plans to reduce its workforce by around 15% and cut car plants to 10 from 17 globally. Sources told Reuters this month Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, and stop production in SA as part of its cost-cutting plan. Nissan's shares rose more than 4% after the report but they gave up most of the gains and were last trading up 0.6%.

Ambulance staff in Himachal threatens protest if demands on wages, work hours remain unmet

Bilaspur , Employees associated with ambulance services on Friday threatened to go on strike if their demands, including eight hours duty and prompt payments, were not fulfilled in the next seven days, bringing 108 and 102 ambulance services in Himachal Pradesh to a halt. Employees associated with these services said that the ambulance services will be stopped across the state and the government, National Health Mission Shimla and the operating company Medshwaan would be held responsible. Bilaspur union president Sanjeev Kumar and deputy president Beeri Singh told the reporters here that the employees of 108 and 102 ambulance services are engaged in serving the public day and night. Their main demands include, eight hour duty, prompt payment of pending arrears, reinstatement of dismissed employees, recognition of service conditions and no firing of employees without valid reason. They said that even during the Covid pandemic, the ambulance staff performed their duty with devotion, without caring for their lives. Despite this, the government and management companies are continuously ignoring them. First the GVK Company and now Medshwaan Company are exploiting the employees, they alleged. The union said that employees are made to work for 12 hours each, while salaries and facilities are not given as per the labour law, they said and added that despite being in service for the last 14 years, they don't have stability. The union has warned that they are currently on a pen-down strike, but if the demands are not met, they will stop the work completely. They have appealed to the people of the state that if ambulance services are disrupted in future, then they should understand the compulsion of the employees and cooperate. They said that if any loss of life occurs in any kind of emergency during this time, then the responsibility will be of the government and the concerned management.
