Nissan plans $7bn funding, including loan backed by UK government

TimesLIVE28-05-2025
Japan's struggling Nissan is considering raising more than ¥1-trillion (R125,794,820,900) from debt and asset sales which would include a syndicated loan guaranteed by the UK government, Bloomberg News said on Wednesday.
The country's third-biggest carmaker plans to issue as much as ¥630bn (R78,291,108) worth of convertible securities and bonds, including high-yielding US dollar and euro notes, Bloomberg News said, citing documents it had seen.
Nissan is also considering taking out a £1bn (R24,260,850,000) syndicated loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance, the report said.
The report said Nissan is also looking at selling part of the stakes it holds in French carmaker and long-standing alliance partner Renault and in battery maker AESC Group, and plants in SA and Mexico.
Representatives for Nissan and UK Export Finance did not respond to a request for comment.
Bloomberg News cited sources as saying Nissan's board did not appear to have approved the funding proposal yet, leaving it unclear whether it would happen.
The proposal was also slated to include the rollover of some debt, the report said.
Earlier this month, the company presented a sweeping cost-cutting plan under which it plans to reduce its workforce by around 15% and cut car plants to 10 from 17 globally.
Sources told Reuters this month Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, and stop production in SA as part of its cost-cutting plan.
Nissan's shares rose more than 4% after the report but they gave up most of the gains and were last trading up 0.6%.

Formula E and FIA agree to contract extension to at least 2048

Formula E will remain until at least 2048 the only all-electric single-seater series sanctioned by motorsport's world governing body after announcing a contract extension with the FIA on Friday. The Liberty Global-controlled series said the 10-year extension, with sources indicating an option for a further five years, provided a solid platform for long-term growth and investment opportunities. Formula E expects its cars to be on the same level as, or exceeding the performance of, other top tier series including Formula One by the middle of the century. The current Gen3 Evo car can already accelerate from 0-100km/h in 1.82 seconds, 30% faster than a Formula One car with a top speed of 321km/h. 'We've believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it's headed,' said Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries. 'With the FIA's continued backing, we can now take the next big steps — scaling the sport, growing its global fan base, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve.' Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said the series had shown extraordinary growth in 11 seasons so far. 'With this long-term extension, the opportunity that Formula E now has to impact world motorsport will be truly transformational,' he said. The current Formula E season closes in London with two races in London this weekend. The drivers' title has been won already by Nissan's Oliver Rowland.

Cognac maker Remy Cointreau lifts guidance after China deal

Louis XIII cognac in a decanter. Louis XIII cognac in a decanter. Image: File. French drinks group Remy Cointreau lifted Friday its outlook for the year after a deal between the EU and China on cognac imports, but now expects a stiffer impact from US levies and the strong euro. The group, which makes Remy Martin and Louis XIII cognac as well as Cointreau orange liqueur, now targets a mid-to-high-single-digits decline in adjusted operating profit for its 2025-2026 financial year, compared with the mid-to-high-teens decline previously forecasted. A major reason behind the improvement is the agreement earlier this month by European brandy exporters to raise prices in China to avoid anti-dumping duties, ending temporary measures that were costing French cognac makers 50 million euros per month. Remy Cointreau now expects a hit of 10 million euros ($11.8 million) from Chinese measures this year, as opposed to the 40 million euros previously. But the company raised its forecast for the impact of US tariffs to 35 million euros, from 25 million previously. The European Union is scrambling to secure a trade deal with the United States before August 1, when Washington has threatened to hike baseline tariffs from 10 to 30 percent. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading The company maintained its forecast of a return to mid-single-digit sales growth stripping out currency changes for 2025-2026, but noted this was primarily due to a rebound from a low comparison base in the United States. Sales rose by 1.8 percent in the April to June quarter to 220.8 billion euros. The gain was 5.7 percent stripping out exchange rate fluctuations and other changes to the business. Quarterly sales in the United States rose from a low base, while they edged lower in Asia due to the Chinese levies and fell in Europe, the Middle East and Africa due to heightened competition and sluggish demand. The strong value of the euro -- it has climbed more than 13 percent against the dollar since the start of the year -- has been weighing upon the results of European companies when they convert foreign sales back into euros. Remy Cointreau said it now expects a negative currency effect impact on sales of between 50 and 60 million euros for its 2025-2026 financial year, up from its earlier estimate of 30 to 35 million euros. It also raised the currency effect impact on adjusted operating profit to between 15 and 20 million euros, compared to 10 to 15 million euros previously. Remy Cointreau's shares jumped around four percent as trading got underway in Paris, while the blue-chip CAC 40 index fell 0.7 percent. AFP
