What to know about the No Tax on Tips Act and who it affects
The no-tax-on-tips provision is getting closer to becoming a reality for the nation's tipped workers. Why it matters: The Senate passed the bill to eliminate federal income tax on tips Tuesday — a campaign promise by President Trump. A version of No Tax on Tips is included in Trump's " Big, Beautiful Bill" that's making its way through the House. The massive bill proposes extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts and cuts to social safety programs. What is the No Tax on Tips Act? The big picture: The No Tax on Tips Act or Bill S. 129 proposes amending the Internal Revenue Code to exempt "cash tips" from federal income tax. Eligible employees will be allowed to claim a 100% deduction of up to $25,000 per tax year. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) introduced the bill, which was sponsored by a bipartisan group of senators, in January. Which workers would be eligible for tax exemption Zoom in: Waiters, bartenders and delivery drivers are examples of employees who could become eligible for the tax exemption, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) said in a statement. Tipped workers tend to be lower income — the median weekly wage for tipped occupations was $538 in 2023 compared to $1,000 for non-tipped workers, according to estimates from The Budget Lab at Yale University. Roughly 4 million U.S. workers were in tipped occupations in 2023 or 2.5% of all employment, per Yale Budget Lab. To qualify for the tax deduction, there would be a $160,000 earnings limit for 2025, which would be indexed for inflation yearly. When does no tax on tips start? What we're watching: The bill has to be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by Trump to become law. If approved, the bill is expected to apply to taxable years beginning after Dec. 31, 2024. The House version sets a Dec. 31, 2028, end date for the tax deduction. Current IRS tax rule on tips How it works: The Internal Revenue Service says current workers who receive cash tips of $20 or more monthly must report those earnings to employers.

State Rep. Dennis Paul announces bid for Texas Senate with backing from Dan Patrick
State Rep. Dennis Paul, R-Houston, announced Thursday he is running for the seat being vacated by state Sen. Mayes Middleton, who is forgoing reelection to run for attorney general. Paul's announcement was quickly followed by an endorsement from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the Senate's powerful presiding officer. Patrick routinely gives his early stamp of approval to GOP Senate candidates running for vacant districts, sending a message to donors and other would-be candidates and, in turn, ensuring the chamber is filled with his political allies. Paul, a 64-year-old engineer who has served in the House since 2015, said in a statement that he would 'remain focused' on the ongoing legislative session but wanted to 'make my intentions clear.' He is the first candidate out of the gate to succeed Middleton, a Republican who represents a slice of southeast Texas running from Galveston to the outskirts of Houston and east Harris County. Virtually all of Paul's House District 129 overlaps with the north part of Middleton's Senate District 11. If elected to the Senate, Paul said, 'I will faithfully represent those values which make Texas the greatest state to live, work and raise a family: faith in God; love for family and liberty.' Patrick said Paul 'has everything that's needed to be a Texas Senator,' citing his 'track record of being a stalwart conservative' and his experience in the House. The domino effect was set off by Attorney General Ken Paxton's decision to challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in next year's primary, opening up Paxton's statewide post for the first time since 2014. Paul's bid for the state Senate means there will also be an open race for his Republican-leaning House district. In the decade he has served in the lower chamber, Paul has largely voted as a mainstream Republican, falling toward neither the moderate nor the most conservative end of the spectrum. He has served on the House Insurance Committee in each of his six terms and has been vice chair of several committees, currently serving as vice chair of the Subcommittee on Transportation Funding. First round of TribFest speakers announced! Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Maureen Dowd; U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-San Antonio; Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker; U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff, D-California; and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas are taking the stage Nov. 13–15 in Austin. Get your tickets today!

Leapmotor to supply EV platform to Hongqi, also in talks with Ferrari
Leapmotor has struck a deal with Chinese state-owned carmaker FAW to deliver an electric vehicle platform that will be used to drive overseas sales for Hongqi, an emerging national champion, executives from both companies said. The deal brings together an unlikely pairing. Leapmotor, a profitable upstart carmaker in China's crowded EV market, will supply the underpinnings for a new EV model to the country's oldest car brand, which got its start supplying sedans for Communist Party leaders and emerged as a fast-growing premium brand in recent years. The agreement represents a win for Leapmotor, which has partnered Stellantis and created waves with its recent rollout of an all-electric B10 SUV equipped with smart-driving features and lidar sensing technology for less than $18,000 (R336,129). 'We have finalised the partnership to jointly develop a model for overseas markets,' Leapmotor CEO Zhu Jiangming told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of this week's Shanghai auto show. Mass production of the new model under the Hongqi brand — translated as Red Flag in English — will start from the second half of 2026, Zhu said. Hongqi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Leapmotor is also in talks with Italian luxury sports car maker Ferrari over a similar partnership to develop a new model based on the Chinese company's EV architecture, Zhu said. Ferrari did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Chinese carmakers and suppliers have been pushing such technology licensing deals for EV platforms or 'skateboards' to reduce the costs and speed up development for companies looking to slash the threshold to profitability on a new EV model. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna visited Leapmotor in February but ongoing talks between the two carmakers had not previously been reported. FAW and Leapmotor signed a memorandum of understanding in March but the details of the deal to supply an EV architecture to Hongqi had also not previously been reported. The new Hongqi model will share the same platform as Leapmotor's B10 and will be manufactured in Leapmotor's Hangzhou plant in eastern China, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. The new car will be an SUV like the B10 with both pure electric and range-extended versions that could be sold in overseas markets including Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East, the person said. Leapmotor declined to comment. Giles Taylor, who oversees Hongqi's design, said the new car would take its underpinnings from Leapmotor but look and feel like the other models in the Hongqi line-up, with a design flair he has described as rooted in Chinese aesthetics. 'The challenge with taking a platform from Leapmotor is making it into a cool, relevant, trendy, but good-looking Hongqi. It has to be Hongqi,' Taylor, who was formerly chief designer for Rolls-Royce, told Reuters. 'I've got no problem taking the power train, but we apply magic on top.' Last month, Leapmotor began presales of the B10 in China with a starting price of 109,800 yuan (R282,255). A variant with lidar and urban navigation is priced from 129,800 yuan (R332,756), or $17,870 (R333,828). The EV maker said on Wednesday it had delivered 8,000 of the new B10 vehicles within 13 days of launch. The company sold just over 300,000 cars last year, less than a tenth of the volume of industry leader BYD, though it was profitable in the fourth quarter, a year ahead of its own earlier forecast. In 2023, Stellantis bought a 21% stake in Leapmotor for $1.6bn (R29,876,386,400). The two carmakers also formed a joint venture, Leapmotor International, in which Stellantis holds a 51% stake.
