New Zealand Backs ASEAN's Resolve For Nuclear-Free Region Amid Rising Global Tensions
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 -- New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters attends the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Friday. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) COPYRIGHT RESERVED By Wan Muhammad Aslah Wan Razali KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- New Zealand has voiced firm support for ASEAN's continuous efforts to keep the region free of nuclear weapons, describing the Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty as a vital pillar of regional peace and security. Its Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the treaty, which came into effect in 1997, is 'a tangible demonstration of ASEAN's deep-rooted wish' to prevent nuclear escalation, especially as nuclear-armed states continue to modernise and expand their arsenals amid growing global tensions. bootstrap slideshow 'We are a State Party to the Treaty of Rarotonga, which established the South Pacific nuclear-free zone. 'We also support other nuclear weapon-free zones and their importance in contributing to regional peace and security,' he said in a written response to Bernama on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings. Peters said New Zealand views SEANWFZ as part of a broader network of nuclear weapon-free zones across the southern hemisphere, including in Latin America, Africa, and the South Pacific. He stressed the importance of these zones in reinforcing global disarmament norms, especially at a time when strategic uncertainties are intensifying. 'It's even more critical that, as fellow members of nuclear weapon-free zone treaties, we continue to support each other in upholding their principles. 'It's also important that we continue to cooperate in support of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which both our countries have joined,' he said.

ASEAN, dialogue partners prioritise Myanmar ceasefire over elections
KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN and its dialogue partners have reiterated that elections in Myanmar are not a current priority, focusing instead on securing a lasting ceasefire and inclusive political dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan emphasised the need to fully implement ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus (5PC), which prioritises ending violence, delivering aid, and fostering dialogue among all stakeholders. Mohamad stated that holding elections without broad participation would only deepen instability. 'There's no point in having a partial election. It won't solve the problem – it will only make things worse,' he said after chairing the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. ASEAN has consistently urged Myanmar to fully comply with the 5PC before considering elections. The bloc has appointed special envoys to engage with all factions and push for a nationwide ceasefire. 'It must be expanded across Myanmar so that all its people can return to a normal life,' Mohamad added. - Bernama

East Asia Summit gains relevance amid global challenges, says Mohamad Hasan
Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan speaks during the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. -Bernamapic KUALA LUMPUR: The East Asia Summit (EAS) has become increasingly relevant and vital since its inception 20 years ago, particularly amidst today's complex crises, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He noted that global and regional dynamics have shifted, posing challenges to the strength of the summit's member states. "From the outbreak of conflicts and rising great power competition, to economic fragmentation, rapid technological shifts, and transnational security threats. "These global and regional dynamics are shifting rapidly, testing the strength of our resolve and institutions, the clarity of our vision, and the resilience of our cooperation," he said in his opening remarks at the EAS on Friday (July 10) here. Mohamad emphasised that despite adversities, it is critical for member states to sustain the purpose and objectives of the Summit in promoting principled engagements and advancing common ground on shared concerns. As Chair, he expressed Malaysia's appreciation to the EAS participating countries for supporting priorities on fostering diplomacy, goodwill, and respect for international law. He added that the participating countries' combined economy reinforces the strategic importance of the Summit as a powerful platform for cooperation and shared prosperity. "With a combined nominal GDP of approximately USD68 trillion, the countries in this hall today account for over half of the global economy. "This economic weight reinforces the EAS's strategic importance, not only as a platform for dialogue, but as a powerful engine for cooperation, that broadens shared prosperity and enhances socio-economic resilience," he added. Mohamad also stated that Asean welcomes and supports all efforts towards peace, including in Ukraine and the Middle East, based on international law, international humanitarian law, and the United Nations Charter. "The longest conflict of modern history, rooted in the unjust and illegal occupation of the Palestinian Territory, must be brought to an end," he said. The EAS comprises eighteen participating countries, including 10 Asean Member States and Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America.
