I built a media business after starring on '16 & Pregnant.' But I'm still afraid that I could lose my financial success in an instant.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kailyn Lowry, founder of the KILLR Podcast Network. It has been edited for length and clarity. I grew up poor. It was normal not to know where my next meal was coming from or where I was sleeping that night. I'm 33 now, but that early poverty still impacts me. I've made plenty of money since, but I'm still afraid that I could lose everything I've built in an instant. I first made significant money on " 16 & Pregnant" and later on "Teen Mom." Still, there was uncertainty. Everyone — the stars of the show and the crew — knew that each season could be our last. I had no financial literacy, so when I received a large lump sum of money, I wouldn't put money aside for taxes. I'd spent one season's earnings playing catch-up, paying the taxes on my previous season's pay. The financial uncertainty — and stress from taxes — was really difficult for me. I found a financial advisor, but meeting them stresses me out My best friend helped me find an accountant, and that person set me up with a financial advisor. That advisor helped me build my financial literacy. Still, I hate those meetings, even to this day. It's triggering to me because of my childhood poverty. Looking at my income, spending, and how much money I do or don't have makes me feel ill. I'm really, really afraid of those numbers. I've never talked about that fear of financial instability in therapy. Maybe I should, but I've had so many traumas in my life that we haven't addressed that yet. I worry podcasting could disappear I knew that my shows with MTV wouldn't last forever, so I wanted to strike while the iron was hot and make this opportunity into something sustainable. That's where podcasting came in, first with my podcast, "Barely Famous," and now with my podcast company. Podcasting has given me the ability to step outside the MTV realm, but it doesn't really give me a sense of security. Podcasting is so new— what if it disappears as quickly as it came? What comes after podcasting, and what if no one cares what I have to say? Imposter syndrome is something I face all the time. Every single day I look at my life and think do I deserve this? Do I have the right to do this? I still feel unworthy of my achievements and successes. I get backlash for having a nanny now When Elliot, my oldest (who used to go by Isaac), was born and I was 17, I couldn't dream of having a nanny. Today, I have a full-time nanny who works at my home Monday through Friday. It's such a luxury. Money has provided me with this option, which means I can be more present when I'm with the kids. I've received a lot of backlash about having a nanny. Many people don't realize that with three kids under two, a nanny is probably cheaper than day care. They also don't realize my business is a career; they think podcasting is a joke. I want my kids to know that entrepreneurship isn't a get-rich-quick path. In fact, sometimes, it means working harder than you would at a traditional job. I make sure that the kids know I work, even if it's not as clear to them as their friends' parents who go to a traditional job. I hope they see my hard work and don't just think I'm living off reality TV money. I teach my kids to save for the future I attribute a lot of my success to my resilience. I've had to build something out of pure survival. My kids don't have the same trauma or struggles as me. I'm glad for that, but I wonder about how I can give them the life I never had and still create a sense of drive. You can't teach someone a business mindset. Elliot has grown up in the public eye alongside me. Because of that, he's able to make money on social media. I've taught him to save a certain amount for taxes and put more in a regular savings account. I encourage him to save by telling him that future income isn't guaranteed. He could lose it all — something he learned when he lost access to his first TikTok account, which had nearly 1 million followers. I want to show him responsibility without making his life hard. That's difficult, and we're working on it every single day.

Online records did not indicate whether she had an attorney who could comment the charges. WAGA-TV reported that police records say that officers went to a home in Rome on Feb. 16 and found John Mark Harris dead from an overdose. Officers saw possible drug paraphernalia at the scene. An arrest warrant accuses Purvis of giving Harris a combination of xylazine and fentanyl known as 'Tranq' that led to an overdose, the television station reported. Purvis was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local officers, according to a statement from the federal agency. The investigation is ongoing, the DEA said. 'DEA reminds the public that nearly 70% of all drug-related deaths involve synthetic opioids, like fentanyl,' said Jae Chung, DEA acting special agent in charge of the Atlanta office. 'Two milligrams of fentanyl is a potentially deadly dose.' Canada Sunshine Girls Toronto Blue Jays Canada Sunshine Girls

'16 & Pregnant' Star Whitney Purvis arrested

Whitney Purvis, known for her appearance on MTV's 16 & Pregnant, has been arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter following a fatal overdose. Authorities in Floyd County, Georgia, took Purvis into custody on July 7, 2025. She is accused of distributing a dangerous combination of drugs known as Tranq, a mix of Fentanyl and Xylazine, which led to the overdose death of John Mark Harris. Along with the involuntary manslaughter charge, Purvis is also facing charges of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. According to police, the drugs Purvis allegedly distributed were responsible for Harris' fatal overdose. This arrest comes shortly after the tragic death of Purvis' 16-year-old son, Weston Jr., who passed away in June from natural causes, though the exact cause of his death has not been confirmed. Purvis has previously been arrested on lesser charges, including allegations of shoplifting a pregnancy test, damaging electronics, and failing to pay child support. She has not yet commented on the latest charges through her representatives. In the wake of her son's death, Purvis shared her grief on social media, calling his passing her 'worst nightmare.' She also publicly spoke about a dispute regarding her son's funeral, claiming that she was blocked from attending by her ex-partner, Weston Gosa Sr., who allegedly excluded her from the event despite prior communications. Purvis first appeared on 16 & Pregnant in 2009, where she introduced audiences to her life as a young mother. Since then, she has faced numerous personal and legal struggles, including losing custody of both of her sons.

'Teen Mom' Stars Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra Address Ongoing Drama With Their Daughter's Adoptive Parents

Fans of Teen Mom have likely been watching the story of Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra since the duo first graced screens during their appearance on 16 & Pregnant. Of the original group of teen parents, the couple were the only ones to put their baby up for adoption, and they both did so with the understanding that the adoption would be an open one, and they'd be allowed to remain in their biological daughter's life in one way or another. However, recent changes to their relationship with her adoptive parents have lead their case to become a closed adoption, leading the couple to make a drastic move. Related: 'Teen Mom's' Ryan Edwards Gets Engaged to Amanda Conner During the May 22 finale, the duo sat down with Dr. Drew Pinsky for the final recap. During their meeting, Dr. Drew explained how he had reached out to the couple who adopted Carly in an effort to smooth things over. As Dr. Drew updated the Baltierra's on his conversation, an emotional Baltierra told the television hos that she felt like the adoptive parents were "keeping this beautiful girl" from her, prompting Dr. Drew to make an astonishing reveal, saying that the families were in desperate need of a "reset" to get back on the same page. "As part of this reset, they shared something very important with me — something rather moving and remarkable from your daughter," Dr. Drew explained. "She sings in church, she's quite an accomplished singer and they recorded a song of hers. I would love to listen with you because it is so moving. It does kind of feel like Carly's sending a message of, 'I'm good.'" However, when the Baltierras said they'd rather listen to the song in private, they were told no. "I have shared with Brandon and Teresa for multiple years, and even at the last visit, how I would love to have a video for her singing and not once has Teresa ever given them to me, but now she'll give them to you? On TV," the mother of three responded. "This is just the beginning. It's not like I'm going to be the conduit from now on," Dr. Drew attempted to smooth things over. "But I think Carly wants to share with not just you, but the world also. She's participating in this. I think she's proud of it." In the end, they decided not to listen to the song on the show, and instead called the entire thing "triggering." Later, Baltierra said that he found the whole thing manipulative. After the episode aired, the couple posted a message to the adoptive parents as well as fans, letting them know that they no longer planned to publicly talk about their biological daughter or the adoption on camera. While there's no word yet whether or not the Baltierras have heard from the adoptive parents since the episode airs, we hope that they're able to find some peace with this situation moving forward. We honestly can't imagine how challenging it must be for everyone involved. Teen Mom's Catelynn Baltierra Says Daughter Carly's Adoptive Parents ‘Cut' Communication With Them

Teen Mom star Catelynn Baltierra (née Lowell) claimed that her eldest daughter Carly's adoptive parents, Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis, 'cut' off contact between them. 'Before communication was cut, I was told Carly was asking her parents, 'Why can't we get together more? Why can't we get together with them for holidays? They would fly here to see me,'' Catelynn, 32, alleged of their estrangement via her Instagram Stories on Sunday, February 10. 'So in my heart, I don't feel it's her wanting this …' The MTV star said if Brandon and Teresa told her it was Carly 'not wanting contact,' she would 'respect that with all of me.' 'And if her mom and dad called and said it's what Carly wants, I would be silent,' she continued in another slide. 'Y'all wouldn't hear a thing from me again about the situation! Because at the end of the day, SHE is what's most important.' Catelynn and her husband, Tyler Baltierra, have had a complicated relationship with Brandon and Teresa, who adopted Carly — now 15 — after her birth in 2009. Tyler, 33, shared an adoption update one day earlier on February 8, where he explained the couple 'stopped sending gifts and updates' to Carly. 'All we can do now is continue to share our perspective, experience and truth as birth parents. All we can do now is continue to advocate for the minority group of adoptees,' he wrote in a lengthy Instagram Stories post. 'We started an email for Carly and write to it often, so that way when she's older and if/when she reaches, we can give her that password for her to read at her discretion. We only want her to have what we believe she deserves and that's the truth.' He continued, 'We've actually just received our whole adoption file and the details in it are even more shocking than we anticipated. We only want what Carly wants, even if that means her wanting nothing to do with us, which we've stated from the beginning.' Fans watched as Catelynn and Tyler made the difficult decision to place Carly for adoption during season 1 of 16 & Pregnant in 2009. They opted for an "open" adoption, allowing Brandon and Teresa to send Tyler and Catelynn photos of Carly over the years and granting them the chance to visit her in person once a year. However, things changed as Carly got older and the couples began bumping heads when Catelynn claimed that the rules of adoption began to change. In September 2024, Catelynn alleged that Brandon and Teresa went as far as having her 'blocked' her on social media. 'Adoption is crazy … I'm blocked all because of me sending updates and pictures of her sisters,' Catelynn, who also shares daughters Novalee, 10, Vaeda, 5, and Rya, 3, with Tyler, wrote via her Instagram Stories at the time. 'How is that fair for Carly and her siblings?' The relationship hasn't seemed to have progressed in the right direction, as the MTV star revealed in January how long it's been since she last saw Carly. 'The last time I saw Carly was, like, two years ago,' the MTV star told Us Weekly in an article published on January 29.
