Anwar hails Asean unity, calls for stronger Islamic world collaboration
KAZAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today hailed Asean as one of the world's most peaceful and economically dynamic regions, urging Islamic nations to embrace greater collaboration and shared values to achieve long-term prosperity. Speaking at the plenary session of the 16th International Economic Forum "Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum 2025", Anwar said Malaysia's ties with its Southeast Asian neighbours serve as a blueprint for trust-based cooperation. "Malaysia is fortunate because we have, among our Asean neighbours, excellent relations based on trust and working together," he said in his keynote address. "Asean happens to be one of the most peaceful regions in the world, vibrant and dynamic economically." He cited examples such as the Asean Power Grid, which connects electricity networks across several member states from Vietnam and Laos to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, as proof of practical regional collaboration. However, Anwar cautioned that economic integration alone was not enough. He stressed that progress must be grounded in ethics, justice and dignity, drawing from Islamic values and the moral teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. "I'm not talking about economic fundamentals, energy transition and digital transformation in the absence of imbibing values and character," he said. "Family values, trust, justice, honour, human dignity, these must be part of our foundation." The prime minister called for a stronger and more cohesive Muslim world, particularly in sectors such as the halal economy, Islamic finance and digital innovation. Embracing the halal adventure is critical, he said, citing the sector's potential value of over US$3 trillion. "It's more than just branding. It must reflect harmony between commerce and conscience." Anwar said Islamic finance should not merely replicate conventional systems, but offer innovative and viable alternatives for both Muslim and non-Muslim societies. He also praised Tatarstan and Russian President Vladimir Putin for their commitment to the KazanForum and for creating platforms to strengthen the voice of Muslim countries on the global stage. "President Putin mentioned repeatedly the need to support this forum and ensure it becomes pragmatic and meaningful," he said. Earlier, the prime minister quoted Russian author and philosopher Leo Tolstoy and Tatar national poet Gabdulla Tukay to highlight the Tatars' resilience and dynamism in forging ties with the Islamic world. "What energy and tenacity," Anwar said, referencing Tolstoy's Haji Murad and Tukay's patriotic poetry. "The Tatars stood firm, never surrendering, facing new challenges with courage. We must learn from this strength as we build new ventures with the Islamic world." Addressing youth empowerment, Anwar urged leaders to include young voices in shaping policies and decisions. "Let our young people reflect on what we have discussed and offer their views. They must have a major say in programmes that affect their future." The prime minister concluded by reaffirming Malaysia's support for KazanForum and praised Tatarstan's role in advancing economic diplomacy with the Islamic world.

Malaysian PM Anwar reaffirms to Asean cohesion, maintains strong ties with Cambodia
KAZAN (Tatarstan), Friday, May 16: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 16th International Economic Forum 'Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum' (KazanForum 2025), marking the highlight of his official visit to the Russian Federation on its final day. - Photo: Bernama KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to Asean cohesion and constructive engagement with regional partners amid complex geopolitical challenges and growing concerns over cross-border repression. In an interview with Al Jazeera's 101 East, released Thursday on the channel's YouTube platform, Anwar stressed the importance of Asean remaining united as the region faces mounting pressure from major powers and intensifying trade tensions. "We have been quite cohesive. I think we need to strengthen that bond together in this changing geopolitical environment. "The focus is on intra-trade, investment, and taking a common position vis-à-vis the big powers and our neighbours,' he said during the interview with senior journalist Mary Ann Jolley. Anwar also described Malaysia's relations with neighbouring countries as "excellent' and emphasised that many regional issues are best resolved through direct personal engagement. He reiterated that Aseab centrality must remain a core guiding principle as the region faces new global trade dynamics, including tariff policies that could impact member states. While acknowledging that tariff changes, particularly from the United States (US), could adversely affect Malaysia, he said : "If we can secure ASEAN unity and cohesion, we may be able to slightly mitigate the impact.' Malaysia currently holds the Asean chairmanship for 2025. Asean comprises 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Malaysia has previously chaired Asean in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. On the issue of cyber scams operating out of South-East Asia, including Cambodia, Anwar said Asean has stepped up collaboration to tackle transnational crime. He dismissed claims that the Cambodian government was complicit in the scam industry, despite critical reports from international watchdogs. "We now have more proactive engagements within Asean on cybersecurity and transnational crimes... We are working towards establishing common rules,' he added. He also said Malaysia continues to maintain close and effective cooperation with Cambodian authorities, which he described as "unrivalled'. Anwar said he would raise any new concerns directly with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. "I will speak to my colleague, the Prime Minister (Hun Manet),' he said. - Bernama

Malaysia Affirms Vital Importance Of Multilateral Cooperation In Adressing Youth Challenges
KAZAN (Tatarstan), May 16 -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivers a digitalisation-themed keynote address at the 16th International Economic Forum 'Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum' (KazanForum 2025), marking the highlight of his official visit to the Russian Federation on its final day. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) COPYRIGHT RESERVED From Sharifah Hunaini Syed Ismail KAZAN (TATARSTAN), May 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia affirms the vital importance and crucial role of multilateral cooperation in addressing the evolving challenges faced by youth, especially within the Islamic world. As such, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for inclusive efforts from all sectors of society to support youth development, as a cornerstone of nation-building and economic growth. Anwar said this in his keynote address at the Strategic Vision Group Meeting: Russia- Islamic World (KazanForum 2025), themed Experience of Russia and the Islamic World in Youth Policy: Common Challenges and Joint Actions. Anwar said the younger generation should also not be exposed to the extreme differences of opinions among Muslim scholars and ulama. 'Our youth cannot witness their leaders, the ulama, having continuous rancorous exchanges on their differences. Nor can they be left to despair over crises like Gaza. 'Our youth must be given hope and must present them with a vision rooted in unity, values, and integrity,' he said. Anwar also highlighted the need for leaders and ulama to rise above differences and instil trust, as well as the right character and correct values in young people, saying that there is a deficit in these qualities within modern political and geopolitical discourse. He said Malaysia addresses these concerns through its MADANI framework, which balances economic advancement, including in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and energy transition, with values-based governance.

PM's Moscow visit attracts up to US$10b in potential trade, investments
KAZAN: The first segment of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the Russian Federation has been described as highly fruitful, with potential trade and investments of between US$5 billion and US$10 billion. During the visit to Moscow, which started on Tuesday, the prime minister also held meetings with industry players, according to Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. One of the sectors in focus was the halal industry. Moscow, which is the capital and the largest city of Russia, has a population of over 13 million people, and between 1.5 million and two million of them are Muslims. 'We saw great potential for the next five years. If all goes well, we could see potential trade and investments worth US$5 billion-US$10 billion between Malaysia and Russia,' he told Malaysian media on Thursday. Muhammad Kamil said during Anwar's meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the parties had discussed several important issues, including the volatile trade landscape. 'We have seen developments that could further strengthen and expand economic trade opportunities, including confirmation and finalisation of arrangements for direct flights by Russian carrier Aeroflot, which will soon commence operations from Moscow to Kuala Lumpur,' he said. He added that this would further boost tourism between both countries, which has already seen a significant increase in tourists from Russia and Malaysia over the past two years. Anwar, who is on a four-day official visit to Russia, arrived in Kazan yesterday for the second segment of his trip, which concludes today. The Prime Minister is expected to deliver a digitalisation-themed keynote address at the 16th International Economic Forum, 'Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum' (KazanForum 2025), which is the highlight of the final day of his official visit to the Russian Federation. Kazan, located more than 830 kilometres from Moscow, is the largest city and capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. It is known as an industrial, commercial, and cultural centre for the Tatars.
