Malaysian PM Anwar reaffirms to Asean cohesion, maintains strong ties with Cambodia

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to Asean cohesion and constructive engagement with regional partners amid complex geopolitical challenges and growing concerns over cross-border repression.
In an interview with Al Jazeera's 101 East, released Thursday on the channel's YouTube platform, Anwar stressed the importance of Asean remaining united as the region faces mounting pressure from major powers and intensifying trade tensions.
"We have been quite cohesive. I think we need to strengthen that bond together in this changing geopolitical environment.
"The focus is on intra-trade, investment, and taking a common position vis-à-vis the big powers and our neighbours,' he said during the interview with senior journalist Mary Ann Jolley.
Anwar also described Malaysia's relations with neighbouring countries as "excellent' and emphasised that many regional issues are best resolved through direct personal engagement.
He reiterated that Aseab centrality must remain a core guiding principle as the region faces new global trade dynamics, including tariff policies that could impact member states.
While acknowledging that tariff changes, particularly from the United States (US), could adversely affect Malaysia, he said : "If we can secure ASEAN unity and cohesion, we may be able to slightly mitigate the impact.'
Malaysia currently holds the Asean chairmanship for 2025.
Asean comprises 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Malaysia has previously chaired Asean in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
On the issue of cyber scams operating out of South-East Asia, including Cambodia, Anwar said Asean has stepped up collaboration to tackle transnational crime.
He dismissed claims that the Cambodian government was complicit in the scam industry, despite critical reports from international watchdogs.
"We now have more proactive engagements within Asean on cybersecurity and transnational crimes... We are working towards establishing common rules,' he added.
He also said Malaysia continues to maintain close and effective cooperation with Cambodian authorities, which he described as "unrivalled'.
Anwar said he would raise any new concerns directly with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Selangor Aero Park to advance Msia's regional air cargo hub ambitions
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft operations at KLIA. (Bernama pic) SEPANG : The development of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) will strengthen Malaysia's ambition to become a leading air cargo hub in Asean, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the 600-acre project aligns with the government's strategy to enhance Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a regional logistics and aerospace centre. Loke said KLIA holds a unique strategic advantage, with a vast land area of 100 sq km and strong connectivity, making it an ideal location for such a development. 'We possess the ingredients and prerequisites unmatched by any other Asean country. KLIA has the potential to expand to five runways (beyond the existing three). 'There is no other airport in the region of this scale,' he said at a press conference following the groundbreaking ceremony for SAP earlier today. Located within the KLIA Aeropolis, SAP carries a gross development value of RM2.3 billion and will be executed in phases to ensure a well-structured, future-ready investment ecosystem. The project is expected to contribute RM55.2 billion annually to the aerospace industry and create over 32,000 high-income jobs by 2030. Elaborating further, Loke said Malaysia has also secured support from China to position KLIA as a regional cargo hub for the Asean market. 'China has agreed to support KLIA as its cargo gateway for the Asean region. This is a highly strategic and significant partnership. 'We also aim to attract investments from aerospace supply chain industries, which includes the production of aerospace components, related technologies, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services,' he said. He expressed confidence that more private sector players will invest in expanding aircraft MRO operations at KLIA. To support this vision, he said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia is currently reviewing KLIA's air traffic control system to address the anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo flight traffic. 'We anticipate a significant increase in air traffic at KLIA, involving both passenger and cargo aircraft. A comprehensive redesign of the air traffic control system is currently under way to enhance operational efficiency and optimise traffic management,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke added that an announcement on the KLIA Aerotrain project will be made soon.

Anwar: Malaysia reaffirms unwavering support for Palestine, aligns with Türkiye on Gaza
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and stands firmly alongside Türkiye in defending the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said he shared his counterpart's stance that they could not afford to remain passive in the face of the suffering in Gaza. "I also expressed my appreciation to him for his unwavering and consistent stance in championing the voice of the oppressed Palestinian people. "Malaysia fully welcomes and supports President Erdoğan's commitment to using all available platforms and means to defend the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people," he said in a Facebook post. Anwar said the phone conversation also touched on Erdoğan's recent official visit to Malaysia, which left a lasting impression and further strengthened the foundation of the longstanding bilateral ties between the two countries. "It was one of the most successful and meaningful visits in the country's diplomatic history – not merely a ceremonial exchange, but one enriched with substantive discussions addressing shared interests. "I view the visit as a reflection of the strong alignment in values and direction between our two nations in upholding justice, sovereignty, and the advancement of the global ummah," he said. Anwar added that Malaysia remained committed to working closely with Türkiye, particularly in forging a strategic alliance that could amplify the voice of the ummah on the global stage. "In the spirit of Aidiladha, sacrifice, steadfastness, and faith in the call of the Almighty, Malaysia will continue to stand with Türkiye in the pursuit of a more peaceful, just, and humane world," he said.
