Former President Joe Biden diagnosed with prostate cancer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Former President Joe Biden has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. Dr. Ravi Patel with the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center joined 17 News at Sunrise to discuss the diagnosis of the former president, saying many tests can be done to prolong Biden's life. According to Patel, the PSA test should be taken at the age of 45. If your family has a history of cancer, it is best to take the PSA test earlier. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as eating less fast food, more fruits and vegetables and reducing alcohol intake is also a great way to lessen cancer diagnosis or other health issues. KGET wins 7 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — KGET has won seven Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including one for Overall Excellence, the Radio Television Digital News Association announced Tuesday. 17 News was recognized by RTDNA winning awards in the categories of Breaking News Coverage; Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Excellence in Writing; Feature Reporting; Newscast; Sports Reporting; and Overall Excellence. KGET nominated for 9 Emmy Awards 17 News won the award for Breaking News Coverage for coverage of Zack Scrivner and charges filed against him on Feb. 14 in connection to a child abuse investigation. The organization recognized KGET for its 17 News at Sunrise broadcast from the Borel Fire. 'Explant: Breast Implant Illness' — a report examining the stories of women who reported illness and symptoms that may have been related to breast implants — was awarded for Feature Reporting. BPD Assistant Chief discusses crime statistics, 2025 Motors Skills Competition
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield Assistant Chief of Police, Jeff Burdick, addressed current issues such as crime statistics, marketplace shooting and much more on 17 News at Sunrise. A recent crime statistic released by the department demonstrates a significant decrease in crime in recent years. To this, Assistant Chief Burdick says studying data and how to better deploy resources attributed to the decrease. 19-year-old dies of injuries suffered in Lamont crash; woman, child uninjured: CHP Tuesday, the Bakersfield Police Department re-submitted its report on the deadly shooting at the Marketplace to the District Attorney's Office. No charges have been filed. Although no charges have been filed towards the 15-year-old shooter, Albert Briseno Jr., Assistant Chief Burdick says, charges for homicide and manslaughter are being requested. Members of the community are welcome to attend the BPD's 2nd annual Motors Skills Competition, free of charge and taking place on March 14 to March 15 at the Park at River Walk on Stockdale Highway. 2025 Remarkable Women candidate: Andrea Hansen
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The time to highlight 2025 Remarkable Women in Kern County has begun. Over the next few weeks, every Tuesday, 17 News at Sunrise will present a remarkable woman candidate, starting off with a woman who is taking her advocacy for Kern all the way to the nation's capital congress, Andrea Hansen. Hansen, executive director of the Kern Dance Alliance, is in Washington D.C. for the Creative West Advocacy and Arts Leadership summit as one of the 10 delegates from California. Advocating for the arts, Hansen hopes to tell legislators, policy makers, and the administration about the importance of the role that arts play in communities.
