BPD Assistant Chief discusses crime statistics, 2025 Motors Skills Competition
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield Assistant Chief of Police, Jeff Burdick, addressed current issues such as crime statistics, marketplace shooting and much more on 17 News at Sunrise.
A recent crime statistic released by the department demonstrates a significant decrease in crime in recent years. To this, Assistant Chief Burdick says studying data and how to better deploy resources attributed to the decrease.
19-year-old dies of injuries suffered in Lamont crash; woman, child uninjured: CHP
Tuesday, the Bakersfield Police Department re-submitted its report on the deadly shooting at the Marketplace to the District Attorney's Office. No charges have been filed.
Although no charges have been filed towards the 15-year-old shooter, Albert Briseno Jr., Assistant Chief Burdick says, charges for homicide and manslaughter are being requested.
Members of the community are welcome to attend the BPD's 2nd annual Motors Skills Competition, free of charge and taking place on March 14 to March 15 at the Park at River Walk on Stockdale Highway.

On March 14, the course will be open to the public around 5 p.m., for those who want to test their skills on bicycles, according to organizers. Participants will need to bring their own bike and helmet to participate.

SKIM Act would tap in federal law enforcement to handle EBT thefts
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County has been plagued with EBT theft for years. A months-long investigation by 17 News uncovered a Romanian Crime Ring behind the card skimming, but the problem went beyond county lines. '$100,00 dollars a month that were stolen before, prior to 2021,' said Congressman Vince Fong, representing California's 20th District. 'Now we're looking at $10 million being stolen a month.' It seems the state ignored this issue for far too long. 'I have my criticism of the state government,' said Fong. Officials presented the 'Stopping Klepto-card and Information Misuse Act'; SKIM Act for its initials on Monday. Tapping in the general attorney and homeland security to fight against welfare fraud. 'We need to tie all the dots together, especially when we have international crime rings that are participating not only within California, or within Kern County, but across state lines,' said Congressman Fong. 'So we have to have the ability for the federal law enforcement agency to coordinate and cooperate with state and local entities. Absolutely not, for the amount that's being stolen, there has to be real teeth to those penalties. We're going to work with the attorney general to raise it to as high as we can…we need it to the point where we can deter this criminal behavior.' Congressman Fong said he hopes bringing national attention to this issue will lead to improving security measures in welfare programs nationwide. Palmdale man killed in Phelan crash, potential hit-and-run charge pending
A Palmdale man died over the weekend from injuries he suffered in a possible hit-and run collision between his SUV and a big rig in Phelan last week, authorities said. Aaron Graham, 37, of Palmdale died at Arrowhead Regional Hospital Medical Center in Colton on Saturday, according to California Highway Patrol officials and San Bernardino County coroner's records. The crash took place about 10:05 p.m. Thursday along eastbound Highway 138, just east of Gramercy Road. Graham was driving a BMW X7 SUV east along Highway 138 prior to the wreck, CHP officials said. A Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling in front of the BMW. "For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the BMW crashed into the rear of the Freightliner's trailer," the agency said in a written statement. Graham was found unconscious inside his SUV and taken to a hospital by paramedics, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries. Upon arrival, officers found the involved big rig had "fled the scene," according to the statement. Authorities found the big rig suspected to have been involved in the crash a short time later, just over a mile away along Hess Road. A man at the wheel of the truck, as well as another man riding as a passenger, were unhurt, according to the CHP. No arrests were made at the scene, but the investigation continued, including the possibility of a hit-and-run charge against the truck driver, officials added. Intoxicated driving was not suspected to be a factor. Coroner ID's man shot, killed in south Bakersfield in January
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Coroner's Office identified a man who was shot and killed in south Bakersfield on New Year's Day. Jatinder Singh, 39, was shot in the 2100 block of East Casa Loma Drive Jan. 1 at around 5:17 p.m., according to officials. Singh was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death was multiple gunshot wounds. Police identified the suspect in the shooting as Gurinder Singh. In January, police said Gurinder Singh was wanted on suspicion of murder and is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on Singh's whereabouts is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111. Anyone who sees him should not approach him, police said, but instead call 911.
