Rivals Five-Star: Breaking down the defensive backs

Nicole Auerbach and Joshua Perry discuss the future of college sports with the dawn of the revenue-sharing era, examining how rules will be enforced as questions swirl. INDIANAPOLIS – The stars came out for the 2025 Rivals Five-Star event at the Indianapolis Colts' facility this week. Here we break down the top defensive backs from the event. MORE FROM INDY: Highlights and analysis | Teams that should be pleased | Positional MVPs | Gorney Awards | Biggest surprises | Flip watch | QB analysis | RB analysis | WR analysis | TE analysis | OL analysis | DL analysis | LB analysis RECRUITING INTEL: Mid-South | Florida | West | Southeast | Midwest RIVALS FIVE-STAR MEDIA DAY: All the news, notes and interviews | The All-Lobby Team | How solid are the commitments? | Roster RIVALS FIVE-STAR INTERVIEWS: Jaden O'Neal | Trae Taylor | Chase Calicut | Samu Moala | Jake Kreul | Felix Ojo | Peyton Houston | CJ Sadler | Richard Wesley | JaReylan McCoy | Carter Scruggs | Nolan Wilson | Carson Sneed | Derrek Cooper | Devin Carter | Jayden Wade | Joel Wyatt | Kaden Henderson | Nick Abrams Standing at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, the Georgia commitment has the length to play anywhere in the defensive backfield. He's got loose enough hips to play some corner but the projection should be safety here where he can roam and make plays. Calicut is an impressive player that will fit right into Kirby Smart's defense in Athens. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH GEORGIA FANS AT One of the biggest revelations of camp was O'Brien's ability to play wide receiver. But he was pretty impressive on defense as well. The Notre Dame verbal out of Philadelphia was excellent in coverage at cornerback and safety. He has outstanding length and showed coverage skills, range and instincts in the secondary. His career at Notre Dame will be fascinating to watch. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NOTRE DAME FANS AT Wyatt was another defender that showed a wide variety of skills during the Rivals Five-Star. He could be a safety in college or a linebacker. Some programs even like him to become an edge rusher. His frame is only going to get more impressive after he enters a college weight program. Wyman got his hands on the ball more than everyone else and consistently forced quarterbacks into bad throws. The Miami commit isn't the biggest defensive back but he has all the traits college and NFL scouts want – elite movement skills, long arms, excellent football instincts and good ball skills. He's got all the tools necessary to be a major impact player for the Hurricanes and become their next great defensive back. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MIAMI FANS AT

Rivals Five-Star: Breaking down the defensive linemen

Nicole Auerbach and Joshua Perry look into Wisconsin suing Miami for the transfer of defensive back Xavier Lucas, unpacking the money that flows through college football and the gray areas that exist with the portal. INDIANAPOLIS – The stars came out for the 2025 Rivals Five-Star event at the Indianapolis Colts' facility this week. Here we break down the top defensive linemen from the event. MORE FROM INDY: Highlights and analysis | Teams that should be pleased | Positional MVPs | Gorney Awards | Biggest surprises | Flip watch | QB analysis | RB analysis | WR analysis | TE analysis | OL analysis RECRUITING INTEL: Mid-South | Florida | West | Southeast | Midwest RIVALS FIVE-STAR MEDIA DAY: All the news, notes and interviews | The All-Lobby Team | How solid are the commitments? | Roster RIVALS FIVE-STAR INTERVIEWS: Jaden O'Neal | Trae Taylor | Chase Calicut | Samu Moala | Jake Kreul | Felix Ojo | Peyton Houston | CJ Sadler | Richard Wesley | JaReylan McCoy | Carter Scruggs | Nolan Wilson | Carson Sneed | Derrek Cooper | Devin Carter | Jayden Wade | Joel Wyatt | Kaden Henderson | Nick Abrams In hindsight we probably should have tried to do a co-MVP situation with Geralds and Khary Wilder. Geralds was dominant throughout the camp and flashed his skills on the inside and outside. His motor runs hot and he came into the camp with something to prove. LSU, Ole Miss, Ohio State and many others are pushing hard for his pledge. If there is one thing we know about Kruel is that he will show up ready to make plays off the edge. Once again he showed his ability to manuever around good offensive tackles where he can win with speed but also some power. His counter moves are improving too. Oklahoma seems to be the leader in the clubhouse right now but don't count out Florida, Ole Miss or Texas. The five-star Texas commit showed the industry why he's rated so highly. He won reps with power and speed through the camp and had some of the best one-on-one wins of the day. He looks like a day one impact player that will be a force in Austin. He's already moved off a commitment to Oregon so Texas will have to fight other powerhouses to keep him. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH TEXAS FANS AT Picking a Defensive Line MVP was difficult because there were so many outstanding options but Wilder got the nod. The Ohio State commit consistently beat offensive linemen at the snap and then used a variety of power moves to knock them off balance. Wilder had some of the longest arms of any prospect in attendance, which he used to keep offensive linemen from getting good hand placement. He was an absolute must-get for Ohio State, which has struggled to land elite defensive linemen. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT

Nebraska quarterback commit Trae Taylor to participate in Rivals Five-Star elite event

Nebraska quarterback commit Trae Taylor to participate in Rivals Five-Star elite event A Nebraska quarterback commit will compete in one of the top recruiting camps in the country later this month. Trae Taylor is confirmed to participate in the 2025 Rivals Five-Star elite event in Indianapolis on June 23 and 24. Taylor is the fifth overall quarterback in the 2027 class and the third overall player in his class from the state of Illinois, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Last season, he threw for 3,061 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, per statistics from MaxPreps. He also carried the football 41 times for 342 yards and four touchdowns while leading Carmel Catholic High School to a 4-7 record. The 2025 Rivals Five-Star elite event will feature 104 high school football players gathering in Indianapolis at the Colts' practice facility. The two-day event will see a media day held on June 23, with the on-field competition taking place on June 24. Since committing to Nebraska back in May, Taylor has been active on social media, peer recruiting other top talent in the 2027 class. Now that all the talent is gathering in one place, it should provide Taylor with an excellent opportunity to make new connections and create opportunities for Nebraska's coaching staff to take advantage of in the future.
