IOA Hoping To Get Back Withheld Olympic Solidarity Grant From IOC

Having overcome an internal feud, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is now hoping to get back the Olympic Solidarity grant, which was withheld last year by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for infighting within the national apex sports body. The IOC's Executive Board on October 8 last year stopped the grant meant for athlete development programmes in the wake of an acrimonious meeting of the IOA on September 26, 2024 in which 12 Executive Council members refused to ratify the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the sports body's CEO. But now that the house has been put in order, IOA President PT Usha is hoping that the IOC would release the grant soon. A Special General Body Meeting (SGM) as well as Executive Council meeting was smoothly conducted on Wednesday after a truce was called on July 24 between Usha and the revolting EC members who were in majority. "The IOC will be happy that we are working together. We have done a lot of things now, and we will meet again," Usha told PTI on the sidelines of the IOA SGM called to approve India's 2030 Commonwealth Games bid. "Whatever they have (IOC) withheld, that we are going to get now. They withheld our Olympic Solidarity grant. We were waiting for the SGM. We will give the report to them and then they will release the money. "That (Olympic Solidarity) is not a small amount, it is Rs 15 crore. We will get it." Olympic Solidarity provides assistance to all National Olympic Committees (NOCs), a share of the broadcast rights from the Olympic Games which is to be used for athlete development programmes. Through Olympic Solidarity, athletes can benefit from scholarships and subsidies, enabling them to train and qualify for the Olympic Games. The IOC had withhold the grant to the IOA after it received allegations and counter-allegations from various parties relating to the "unfortunate situation" in the IOA. If India gets to host 2030 CWG, it will be tech-driven with use of AI The IOA General Body unanimously approved India's bid for the 2030 CWG, with the country emerging as the favourite to host the event. Iyer said if India gets the hosting right, then they will ensure the event will be technology driven one, with the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence. "The focus for the Commonwealth Sport (earlier CGF) and for us also is on sustainability, legacy of the Games will have to be the host city and the country. 2030 CWG will be technology-driven with strong emphasis on the incorporation of AI," he said. 'India in dialogue with IOC despite "pause" in host selection process' New IOC President Kirsty Coventry has declared that the entire Olympic host selection process was being paused and a working group being set up to figure out the "appropriate time" to identify a future host. Iyer said the IOA, which has already submitted its Expression of Interest to host the 2036 Olympics, has been in touch with the IOC despite the "pause" on the whole process. "We are in a continuous dialogue... means today I can pick up the phone and ask IOC if their are some doubts. They (IOC) can call us and check on certain things. "They themselves have decided to pause and reflect. They are trying to sort out how is it that they want to approach the whole idea of allotting the Olympics. They want a re-look at it. "When we met them, it was like a workshop, as to what we need to do, a lot of focus on sustainability, on diversity, on equal opportunity, on more women coming into... there is a lot of discussion on all these things." Asked when a 2036 Olympics Bid Committee will be formed, he said, "I think everything would be formed now. Only there are certain contours of the committee. You will hear about it soon."

IOA approves India's 2030 CWG bid; says Games to include all 'medal-earning' sports

The Indian Olympic Association has unanimously approved India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Bhubaneswar in contention as host cities. IOA president PT Usha has said that Delhi and Bhubaneswar will also be considered as host cities. Image: PTI New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday formally approved the country's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games during its Special General Meeting (SGM) here with its top officials saying that India would host an 'inclusive' edition featuring all 'medal-earning' sports. India has already submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG with Ahmedabad as the host city. But the nation will have to submit the proposals for the final bid before the August 31 deadline. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD IOA President PT Usha said along with Ahmedabad, 2010 host Delhi and Bhubaneswar will also be considered. 'I am happy that all are together and it was a unanimous decision and our preparations will go ahead. We can't just tell whether Ahmedabad is the host city. We have good facilities in Bhubaneswar and even in Delhi also,' Usha said after the SGM that lasted just over half an hour. 'The 2026 Glasgow CWG is a scaled down Games because of circumstances. If we get 2030 CWG, it will be full fledged one just like we did in 2010,' she added, referring to the pruned roster of the 2026 Glasgow edition where major sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling and shooting have been left out citing the cost factor. With Canada having pulled out of the race, India's chances of getting the 2030 CWG have brightened. 'The plan is to have all our medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling etc. Our traditional sports like kabaddi, and kho kho should also be there,' IOA joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey said. A team of officials from Commonwealth Sport, led by its Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited Ahmedabad to inspect the venues and meet Gujarat government officials. A bigger delegation of Commonwealth Sport is expected to be in the city later this month. 'The 2030 CWG will be a full-fledged Games. We will have all the sports we are good at and have a chance of winning maximum medals,' said Executive Council member Rohit Rajpal. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'There are three groups of sports. First is core sports of the Commonwealth Games which are always there, then are sports which the host nation can choose and the third one are the additional sports. 'The 2030 will be an inclusive Games and will feature our traditional and indigenous sports also,' Rajpal added. The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will decide the host country in the last week of November in Glasgow. India has previously hosted the 2010 edition of the multi-sport event in Delhi. The SGM was preceded by the Executive Council meeting in the morning.

(Picture Credit: PTI) India's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games will receive formal approval from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) during the top sports body's Special General Meeting (SGM) on Wednesday, as the country has emerged as a favourite to host the multi-sport event. The main agenda for the SGM at the IOA headquarters is the 'Approval to submit a bid to Commonwealth Sport (former CGF) for hosting the 2030 CWG in India, including any incidental actions therewith'. The other two items to be discussed at the SGM are: (a) consideration and passing of the audited statement of accounts for the financial year 2023-24; and (b) appointment of a statutory auditor for the financial year 2024-25. Since it's an SGM, the discussion will be restricted to the three mentioned agenda items. India has already submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2030 CWG with Ahmedabad selected as the host city. However, the country must submit the final bid proposals before the August 31 deadline. With Canada having withdrawn from the race, India's chances of securing the 2030 CWG have improved. A team of officials from Commonwealth Sport, led by its Director of Games Darren Hall, is in Ahmedabad for a three-day visit to inspect the venues and meet Gujarat government officials. A large delegation from Commonwealth Sport is expected to visit India later this month. The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will decide the host country in the last week of November in Glasgow. 'The host selection will be based on sustainability, athletic centre, and flexibility in terms of regional appeal," said IOA executive committee member Lt. Gen. (retd) Harpal Singh, who is also a member of the Sports Committee of Commonwealth Sport. 'We are hopeful and optimistic that the 2030 Games will come to India."
