IOA Hoping To Get Back Withheld Olympic Solidarity Grant From IOC
But now that the house has been put in order, IOA President PT Usha is hoping that the IOC would release the grant soon. A Special General Body Meeting (SGM) as well as Executive Council meeting was smoothly conducted on Wednesday after a truce was called on July 24 between Usha and the revolting EC members who were in majority.
"The IOC will be happy that we are working together. We have done a lot of things now, and we will meet again," Usha told PTI on the sidelines of the IOA SGM called to approve India's 2030 Commonwealth Games bid.
"Whatever they have (IOC) withheld, that we are going to get now. They withheld our Olympic Solidarity grant. We were waiting for the SGM. We will give the report to them and then they will release the money.
"That (Olympic Solidarity) is not a small amount, it is Rs 15 crore. We will get it." Olympic Solidarity provides assistance to all National Olympic Committees (NOCs), a share of the broadcast rights from the Olympic Games which is to be used for athlete development programmes.
Through Olympic Solidarity, athletes can benefit from scholarships and subsidies, enabling them to train and qualify for the Olympic Games.
The IOC had withhold the grant to the IOA after it received allegations and counter-allegations from various parties relating to the "unfortunate situation" in the IOA.
If India gets to host 2030 CWG, it will be tech-driven with use of AI
The IOA General Body unanimously approved India's bid for the 2030 CWG, with the country emerging as the favourite to host the event.
Iyer said if India gets the hosting right, then they will ensure the event will be technology driven one, with the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence.
"The focus for the Commonwealth Sport (earlier CGF) and for us also is on sustainability, legacy of the Games will have to be the host city and the country. 2030 CWG will be technology-driven with strong emphasis on the incorporation of AI," he said.
'India in dialogue with IOC despite "pause" in host selection process'
New IOC President Kirsty Coventry has declared that the entire Olympic host selection process was being paused and a working group being set up to figure out the "appropriate time" to identify a future host.
Iyer said the IOA, which has already submitted its Expression of Interest to host the 2036 Olympics, has been in touch with the IOC despite the "pause" on the whole process.
"We are in a continuous dialogue... means today I can pick up the phone and ask IOC if their are some doubts. They (IOC) can call us and check on certain things.
"They themselves have decided to pause and reflect. They are trying to sort out how is it that they want to approach the whole idea of allotting the Olympics. They want a re-look at it.
"When we met them, it was like a workshop, as to what we need to do, a lot of focus on sustainability, on diversity, on equal opportunity, on more women coming into... there is a lot of discussion on all these things." Asked when a 2036 Olympics Bid Committee will be formed, he said, "I think everything would be formed now. Only there are certain contours of the committee. You will hear about it soon."

Delhi HC for inclusion of Dragon Boat Racing in Khelo India Water Sports Festival at Dal Lake
The Delhi High Court has directed the Centre to coordinate with the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir to include Dragon Boat Racing as a competitive sport in the upcoming Khelo India Water Sports Festival, scheduled from August 21 to 23, 2025, at Dal Lake, Srinagar. The court, in its August 12 order, said the sport's inclusion in the upcoming event was conditional on the petitioner — Dragon Boat India and Traditional Sports Federation — providing full logistical and technical support. This includes supplying dragon boats, trained officials, organising selection camps, and creating the necessary infrastructure, all without causing inconvenience to the host State. The court took note of the fact that Dragon Boat Racing, officially recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia and featured in the 6th Asia Beach Games (Sanya, China, 2020) is an emerging sport with a growing global footprint. The petitioner argued that the discipline also has deep historical roots in the northeast and south India, forming part of the country's sporting heritage, and deserves proactive promotion under the Khelo India Programme's mandate to revive indigenous games. The Centre, however, noted that the sport had been introduced only as a demonstrative event in the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival. It pointed out that the list of competitive and demonstration sports was finalised on June 6, 2025, and the host had already begun preparations, making last-minute additions challenging due to venue readiness, equipment procurement, and athlete training constraints. The court, however, observed, 'Inclusion of Dragon Boat Racing is therefore entirely consistent with the scheme's vision of revitalising traditional sports, nurturing indigenous talent, and advancing athletes from the grassroots to the highest international platforms, including the Olympic Games'.

Vece Paes: Rich praise for great son of Assolna who inspired many sportspersons
Dr Vece Paes (left) with other 1972 Olympic bronze medallists Harmik Singh and Ashok Kumar during a dinner in Delhi to honour visiting International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach hosted by the Indian Olympic Association Panaji: Close to 25 Olympians trace their origin to Goa but most were born and brought up outside the state. Vece Paes was a rare exception as the hockey great and sports medicine expert was born here. A member of the bronze medal-winning hockey teams at Barcelona World Cup in 1971 and Munich Olympics in 1972, Paes passed away at home in Kolkata on Thursday after a prolonged battle with advanced Parkinsons at age 80. 'Saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Vece Paes, a proud Goan from Assolna with roots in Velim,' chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday. 'An Olympic medallist and distinguished physician, he embodied dedication, discipline, and service to our nation.' Assolna, a serene village in South Goa, has links to several Olympians like Paes' son Leander (tennis), Joaquim Carvalho (hockey) and Tanisha Crasto (badminton). Carvalho, part of the Indian hockey team at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, said Paes' death has left a vacuum in Indian sports. "He was a versatile player, gentleman and donned multiple hats in his long association with Indian sports. His contribution towards Indian sports in the field of hockey and sports medicine has been immense. I feel proud that we hail from the same village of Assolna,' said Carvalho, who won silver at the Delhi Asiad and later coached the national hockey team. Oscar Martins, president of the Cuncolim Hockey Club, described Dr Paes as 'a great son of Assolna who inspired many sportspersons.' Cuncolim Hockey Club, he said, will work hard in realising the dream of AVC to have the next Olympian. Assolna, Velim, and Cuncolim (AVC) is a tri-conglomerate of villages in South Goa of three bodies but with one soul. Besides hockey, Paes was involved in football as a sports medicine expert and was president of the Indian Rugby Football Union (1996-2002). "Dr. Paes made invaluable contributions to sports medicine in India. He was chairman of the AIFF Medical Commission from 2003 to 2006, during which he conceptualised comprehensive sports medicine programmes, sports medicine centres, training and accreditation of sports medicine teams, and propagated the Peak Performance Programme with the national teams (seniors, U19, U17 and U15), as well as various National Football League clubs,' the All India Football Federation said in a statement. He later served as chairman of the AIFF Medical Committee from 2017–2020. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). LA28 to allow venue naming rights for first time in Olympic history
Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will, for the first time in Games history, allow venue naming rights, organizers said on Thursday, unveiling Comcast and Honda 7267.T as inaugural partners in a move aimed at boosting commercial pilot program, developed with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will let qualifying LA28 partners retain existing venue names during the Games and buy additional marketing also opens naming rights for up to 19 temporary venues to worldwide Olympic partners and LA28 sponsors, while standard "clean venue" rules continue for non-partner sites. Comcast CMCSA.O will lend its name to the Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios, where squash will make its Olympic debut on the Courthouse Square backlot. Honda Center in Anaheim will become the first arena to keep its name during an Olympic competition, hosting indoor volleyball."Anytime you're the first to do something in the context of the Olympics, it's a big deal," LA28 chair Casey Wasserman told Reuters."It's a big opportunity for us and it's a big statement of support from the IOC. We think it will be a really powerful platform and opportunity in the commercial sector, so we're really excited."Wasserman said the deals introduce a "new commercial model" for the Olympic movement. The IOC traditionally enforces strict branding rules during the Games, masking corporate signage at competition noted money from selling venue naming rights would be in addition to the overall sponsorship revenue target of $2.5 billion, which LA28 calls the largest commercial revenue raise in sports."We've been very conservative, so we have none of this revenue in our budget so any revenue is upside," he said."Having said that, we think it could be significant. It's a really powerful platform for branded partners of ours to engage with us and also with the globe, because it's part of the broadcast. The reach is really stunning."From a practical perspective, the potential for SoFi Stadium and arena to maintain their names during the Games will help fans navigating the city."As a pure matter of wayfinding, it's actually an important piece of the puzzle," he which holds U.S. broadcast rights through NBC and Peacock, said it would support LA28 "across our entire company," including coverage and the squash which in June was named the Games automotive sponsor, said its long-backed Anaheim arena would "step onto the international stage to power Olympic dreams," according to Ed Beadle, a vice president at American Honda Motor said additional naming-rights partners are expected as the three-year countdown continues.- Ends
