Delhi HC for inclusion of Dragon Boat Racing in Khelo India Water Sports Festival at Dal Lake
The court, in its August 12 order, said the sport's inclusion in the upcoming event was conditional on the petitioner — Dragon Boat India and Traditional Sports Federation — providing full logistical and technical support. This includes supplying dragon boats, trained officials, organising selection camps, and creating the necessary infrastructure, all without causing inconvenience to the host State.
The court took note of the fact that Dragon Boat Racing, officially recognised by the Olympic Council of Asia and featured in the 6th Asia Beach Games (Sanya, China, 2020) is an emerging sport with a growing global footprint.
The petitioner argued that the discipline also has deep historical roots in the northeast and south India, forming part of the country's sporting heritage, and deserves proactive promotion under the Khelo India Programme's mandate to revive indigenous games.
The Centre, however, noted that the sport had been introduced only as a demonstrative event in the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival. It pointed out that the list of competitive and demonstration sports was finalised on June 6, 2025, and the host had already begun preparations, making last-minute additions challenging due to venue readiness, equipment procurement, and athlete training constraints.
The court, however, observed, 'Inclusion of Dragon Boat Racing is therefore entirely consistent with the scheme's vision of revitalising traditional sports, nurturing indigenous talent, and advancing athletes from the grassroots to the highest international platforms, including the Olympic Games'.

I really hope I could have helped Vece Paes get replica of his lost Olympic bronze medal
DR VECE Paes, a member of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games bronze-winning India's men's hockey team and father of legendary tennis player Leander Paes, passed away at the age of 80 on Thursday morning. I still cannot believe that he is no longer with us. It was him who supported me morally and helped me grow as a hockey player when I joined Kolkata's Mohun Bagan in 1969. He was senior to me but made every effort to make sure I gained confidence and polished my skills as well. More than a couple of years ago I met him when Mohun Bagan organised a function in Kolkata to felicitate him, Gurbux Singh and me. I received a call from Paes a few days before the function. He asked me to bring the Olympic bronze medal when I visit Kolkata and I was more than happy to do it. Paes had lost his medal and wanted to get a replica prepared, that's why he wanted that medal. My medal was with him for around four-five months but he could not find someone who could prepare the replica. He told me that he tried finding some good replica artists in Mumbai and Kolkata but failed. He passed away today and it's unfortunate that he did not have that bronze medal, his biggest sporting success, with him in his last moments. His son Leander also won an Olympic bronze in 1996 Atlanta Games and he was a proud father. I really hoped I could have helped him get a replica prepared. I still remember Leander accompanying him to Mohun Bagan ground during matches and practice sessions. At that time, he was not sure which sport he would choose. Sometimes he will play hockey with us and on some days he will bring bow and arrows. These days parents go to any length to make sure their children succeed as athletes but it was Paes and his wife Jennifer, also a former India basketball captain, who probably started that trend. They left no stone unturned to make Leander a successful tennis player.

Khelo India Water Sports Festival mascot released
The mascot for the first ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF), which will be held at the iconic Dal Lake from August 21 to 23 featuring more than 400 athletes from all over the country, was unveiled in Srinagar on Thursday (August 14, 2025). The Himalayan Kingfisher will be the mascot for the festival which is a part of the Khelo India calendar. Before this, the inaugural Khelo India Beach Games were held in Diu in May this year. "The Himalayan the spirit of adventure, nature, and competition in the Games. With its bold orange and blue, it represents energy, tranquillity, and the beauty of Kashmir," stated a press release from the Sports Authority of India. The festival will be hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India. For Jammu and Kashmir, this will be the second Khelo India event after Gulmarg hosted the snow events of the Khelo India Winter Games in March. The KIWSF will feature rowing, canoeing and kayaking as medal events. The demonstration events will be water skiing, shikara race and dragon boat race. More than 400 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories are expected in Srinagar. J&K's Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, and the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, released the mascot and the logo. The official kits of the Games were also revealed. "Gulmarg has already become the winter games capital of the country, and now Dal Lake will become the water sports hub of the country," said Sadiq.
