Team Penske names new leadership atop IndyCar, sportscar teams after Indy 500 cheating scandal

LEXINGTON, Ohio — Team Penske has promoted a pair of veteran team members to roles atop both its IndyCar and sportscar programs in the wake of the Roger Penske firing the three most senior members atop his IndyCar program in the wake of Team Penske's second high-profile team-wide tech inspection violation in 13 months. Jonathan Diuguid, who most recently served as the managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport and who joined Team Penske in 2005, has been named the president of Penske Racing Inc., overseeing Team Penske's programs in IndyCar, IMSA and WEC. Travis Law, who joined Team Penske in 2007 and most recently served as the competition director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, has been named the competition director of Penske Racing Inc. similarly overseeing Penske's IndyCar and sportscar programs moving forward. "The opportunity to lead the Team Penske efforts across the IndyCar series, IMSA and WEC is a tremendous responsibility, and the feeling of being trusted to lead these teams is a great honor," Diuguid said. "After two decades of working for Roger Penske, I truly know and understand what the Penske name means to the world of motorsports. "The best way I know to show my appreciation to him for his trust is to ensure our success continues well into the future." As the managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, Diuguid spearheaded a program that snagged consecutive wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona (2024-25), a victory in the 2025 12 Hours of Sebring, a 2024 IMSA GTP class championship and the 2024 WEC Hypercar driver's title. Diuguid first worked on Penske's Porsche RS Spyder program, followed by seven seasons as a race engineer in IndyCar before shifting into his most recent role atop the team's sportscar programs. Last year, he also served as a stand-in Indianapolis 500 strategist for race-winner Josef Newgarden, in place of Tim Cindric, the ex-Team Penske president and Newgarden strategist who was serving a suspension after the team's push-to-pass illegalities. 'We let people down': Roger Penske on Indianapolis 500, IndyCar rules violations Law joined Team Penske in 2007 as an IndyCar tire specialist before becoming a championship-winning chief mechanic and then achieving similar success in Penske's sportscar program. "Success is what is expected at Team Penske," Law said. "Roger Penske is someone that leads by example. When we get to the racetrack, we know we have the support of someone who has achieved at the highest levels. I am ready to get to work." Concurrently with its leadership announcements, Team Penske also announced the team leaders on all three IndyCar entries for the remainder of the year Friday afternoon, with Luke Mason (Newgarden's No. 2 car) and David Faustino (Will Power's No. 12 car) serving as both the race strategist and race engineers on their respective cars. For Scott McLaughlin's No. 3 car, Ben Bretzman has been named the entry's race strategist for the remainder of the year, and Malcolm Finch will serve as the car's race engineer. More: IndyCar president Doug Boles on Team Penske's violations during Indy 500 qualifying Less than a week before the 109th Indy 500, Penske fired Cindric, his longtime righthand man who for years had served as the president of the entire Team Penske empire and who at the start of this year had scaled back, solely holding onto the role of president of the Penske IndyCar team, as well as longtime Team Penske IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and longtime Team Penske IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer. Minutes before the start of Fast 12 qualifying for the Indy 500, the cars of Newgarden and Power were found by IndyCar's tech inspection team to have illegally modified attenuators that upon further review had gone undetected for well over a year. Initially, both cars were thrown out of qualifying and slated to start 11th and 12th for the race, but the following day, IndyCar president Doug Boles decided to move both cars to the back of the grid to start 32nd and 33rd, along with the suspension of Cindric and Ruzewski a handful of other monetary and points penalties. Two days later, Team Penske announced the leaders atop all three of its cars had been let go.

Porsche Teases New 963 RSP Hypercar

Summary Porschehas officially unveiled the name of its mysterious and potentially roadgoing endurance project: the 963 RSP. Teased in a new ASMR-style video, the one-off hypercar is based on the 963 endurance racer that's already clinched back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The short film shows Porsche artisans sewing custom upholstery, sanding carbon-fiber panels and applying paint by hand, culminating in the installation of a real Porsche crest on the hood, a notable departure from the sticker badge used on the race car for weight savings. While Porsche hasn't revealed specs, the RSP is expected to mirror the race-bred twin-turbo V8 hybrid setup of its track-only sibling. According to earlyreports, the RSP name may also nod to Roger S. Penske, whose team oversees Porsche's dominant endurance program. With only one 963 RSP slated for production, its debut is likely timed for just before the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14. In the meantime, check out the teaser for yourself below.

Porsche Penske No. 7 Wins at Long Beach to Extend Season Opening Streak to Three in a Row

Nick Tandy and Felipe Nasr are officially tied for the longest opening streak to a season in IMSA's modern prototype era, as the two full-time drivers of the No. 7 Porsche 963 have won the opening three rounds of the 2025 season. Their sprint win in the 100-minute Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach joins their second consecutive 24 Hours of Daytona, followed by the 12 Hours of Sebring last month. Their Porsche teammates in the No. 6 finished in second for the second Porsche Penske 1-2 of the season. Nasr was the closing driver and, after some earlier battling with his teammate in the No. 6, was able to pull away to a 3.058-second victory at Long Beach. After winning the 24 Hours of Daytona last year, Porsche Penske went on to win the championship, but their start was still not nearly as hot as it is in 2025. The No. 7 team dominated what Tandy calls a flawless race. The British-born driver, while Facetiming his kids after the race, shared that his young son Felix credited the win to Nasr's energy management. "He said, 'Awesome job of energy management for Felipe,'" Tandy joked. "Honestly, that's what won the race. Short stop and awesome management. Flawless, again. I love it." While the drive wasn't flawless, with Tandy and Nasr admitting to making major saves to stay out of the barriers, the start of the season is. "Incredible," Nasr told NBC Sports on his teammate's save. "I had one as well right after the pit stop when we went green. I had a moment in I think [turn] 8 where I lost the rear and saved it. It was tricky out there, it's difficult to keep the car in one line, once I found my pace I just kinda stayed there." On the flip side, the first sprint race of the 2025 season for Team RLL's duo of BMW M Hybrid V8s followed the same script as the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring this year, where high expectations and pole positions ended with the No. 24 and No. 25 entires finishing behind the Porsche Penskes. The No. 24 piloted by Dries Vanthoor led the opening part of the race before the only pit stop taken by leaders, a slow pit stop during a caution, only 30 minutes in was enough to send BMW back to third. Philip Eng was the closing driver for the No. 24 and completed the podium after the lead was lost on the pit stop. The BMW team was followed by Earl Bamber and Jack Aitken in the No. 21 Action Express Racing Cadillac V-Series and then their teammates Marco Wittman and van der Linde in the No. 25 to complete the overall top five. In its 100-minute North American debut, the Aston Martin Valkyrie had its season-best finish of eighth behind the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillacs in sixth and seventh. This Yankee Never Won The World Series, But It Finished Second In Class At Le Mans

How quickly do you think a 2002 Porsche 911 GT3 R Le Mans GT2-classed race car could round the bases at Yankee Stadium? Could it do it quicker than an average MLB runner? It might be tight. Flip that hypothetical, however, and there's no way that Mickey Mantle could run around Circuit de la Sarthe in a quicker time than this 540-horsepower rear-engine sprinter, even in his prime. This factory-built racer was among the most popular machines of its era thanks to tried and true speed and reliability. A full squad of seven GT3 Rs showed up to Le Mans in 2003 and swept the top six positions at the end of the race. This one finished second in the GT2 category after 314 hard-charged laps, 17th overall from a 50-car field. A full 22 years later, you can buy this pinstriped racer during Broad Arrow's Air/Water auction on April 26 in Costa Mesa, California. I have been informed by my New York City colleagues that YES Network was Yankee Entertainment and Sports. The network showed up on the car because one of the drivers, Leo Hindery, was involved in securing the television rights for Yankees baseball and owned YES Network. Hindery was joined by Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb and the squad was rounded out by software tech sales guy Peter Baron (who would eventually go on to start Starworks Motorsport). The car was prepared for the race by Florida's Orbit Racing, and ran with YES Network branding for the full 2002 and 2003 seasons. Its highest finish was sixth overall and fourth in class at the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona. Pretty impressive, honestly. According to the seller this car has never seen significant damage, and has never been "retubbed". The original Le Mans tech inspection stickers are still applied to the chassis. It has been updated with modern safety equipment to meet historic racing standards around the world, including a modern fuel cell and modern racing harnesses. It has had a single shakedown test since the restoration was completed, so if you're looking for a turn-key race car to take vintage racing this season, this is the one you want. Well, you know, if you have the $450,000 to $500,000 that Broad Arrow has put down as the pre-auction estimate. I'm an absolute simp for the 996-generation Porsche 911, and I would absolutely be on my way to buy this car if I had that kind of money to spend on one. Alas, I do not, and therefore won't be buying at this time. You won't have to bid against me, don't worry. Want more like this?
