Foreign Affairs sec-gen meets Premier to discuss South China Sea Code of Conduct

KUCHING (Aug 14): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received a courtesy call from Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today.
Amran said the visit was to convey appreciation to the Premier and the Sarawak government for hosting the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (SOM-DOC)
'This meeting is one of the main engagements at the Asean-China senior officials level to seek a collective direction in ensuring peace, security and prosperity in Southeast Asia, particularly in strengthening cooperation on South China Sea issues,' he told reporters when met after the meeting.
He also clarified the discussion did not focus on matters of territorial boundaries or jurisdiction, but rather on two key points – ensuring all parties continue to respect the principles contained in the declaration, and advancing negotiations to finalise the Code of Conduct (COC) for the South China Sea.
'We have set a target to conclude the COC negotiations by July 2026. The deadline is approaching, and negotiations must be intensified so that the draft COC can be finalised as scheduled,' he said.
