KUCHING (Aug 14): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received a courtesy call from Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today.
Amran said the visit was to convey appreciation to the Premier and the Sarawak government for hosting the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (SOM-DOC)
'This meeting is one of the main engagements at the Asean-China senior officials level to seek a collective direction in ensuring peace, security and prosperity in Southeast Asia, particularly in strengthening cooperation on South China Sea issues,' he told reporters when met after the meeting.
He also clarified the discussion did not focus on matters of territorial boundaries or jurisdiction, but rather on two key points – ensuring all parties continue to respect the principles contained in the declaration, and advancing negotiations to finalise the Code of Conduct (COC) for the South China Sea.
'We have set a target to conclude the COC negotiations by July 2026. The deadline is approaching, and negotiations must be intensified so that the draft COC can be finalised as scheduled,' he said.
Also present at the courtesy call was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sarawak region director Fenny Nuli. Abang Johari Code of Conduct Ministry of Foreign Affairs south china sea

Sarawak to take in Cambodian students, eyes direct Phnom Penh-Kuching flight route

Othsman (left) talks to Abang Johari during the courtesy call at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi today. – Sarawak Public Communications Unit photo KUCHING (Aug 14): Sarawak is prepared to provide scholarships to high school and university students from Cambodia, besides considering proposals for opening a direct Phnom Penh-Kuching flight route. Cambodian Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions (Islamic Affairs) Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan said they are considering sending their students to further their education in fields like engineering, accounting and law. 'So far, no student from Cambodia has pursued further education in Sarawak because Cambodian students who received scholarships are all placed in Kuala Lumpur. 'We hope the Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) will support the intake of these students… the total number of students has yet to be determined,' he said after paying a courtesy call on the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. In August, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said a total of RM4.5 million in zakat funds had been allocated by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) to fully sponsor 100 Cambodian students at three educational institutions in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Project Coordination for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs), said the International Islamic School in Sarawak, which is expected to be completed in 2027, would take in students from Regional Islamic Dakwah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) member countries, including Cambodia. 'So, high school students from Phnom Penh will be invited to study at this international school because it will take into account the intake of students from RISEAP member countries,' he said. He added that during the meeting with Abang Johari, Othsman also urged that Phnom Penh be included as one of AirBorneo's flight destinations when the airline company begins operations. AirBorneo, previously known as MASwings, is currently owned by Sarawak as the state's first airline company. – Bernama cambodia education flights Sarawak scholarship

China, India in talks to resume border trade after 5-year pause

FILE PHOTO: A worker rolls up carpets at an export house in Noida, India, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009. For over three decades, India and China had traded locally produced goods - such as spices, carpets, wooden furniture, cattle fodder, pottery, medicinal plants, electric items, and wool - through three designated points along their 3,488-kilometre disputed Himalayan border. - Bloomberg NEW DELHI: India and China are discussing resuming border trade of locally made goods after more than five years, marking the latest step in a slow but steady effort by the Asian neighbours to ease long-standing tensions, according to officials in New Delhi familiar with the matter. Both sides have proposed restarting trade through designated points on the shared border, and the matter is currently under bilateral discussion, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are still private. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday (Aug 14) that Beijing is "willing to step up communication and coordination with India' on the matter. "Border trade between China and India has long played an important role in improving lives of the two countries' border residents,' it said in a response to a query from Bloomberg News. India's Ministry of External Affairs didn't respond to an email seeking further information. For over three decades, India and China had traded locally produced goods - such as spices, carpets, wooden furniture, cattle fodder, pottery, medicinal plants, electric items, and wool - through three designated points along their 3,488-kilometre disputed Himalayan border. The trade value is relatively small, estimated at just US$3.16 million in 2017-18, according to the most recent government data available. The trading points were shut during the Covid-19 pandemic, which coincided with a sharp decline in relations between the two nations after border clashes in the Himalayas killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops. The planned resumption marks another sign that relations between the two neighbours are gradually improving after both sides took steps last year to end border tensions. China and India are set to resume direct flight connections as soon as next month, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, while Beijing has eased curbs on some fertilizer shipments to India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to head to China for the first time in seven years in August to attend a summit of the Beijing-led regional security grouping - the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - and hold a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines. The normalising in ties between the two countries come against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between New Delhi and US President Donald Trump, who has imposed a 50 per cent tariff rate on Indian exports to the US, significantly higher than the duties imposed on regional peers. - Bloomberg

Abdul Karim calls for better security for leaders' families after attack on Rafizi's son

Abdul Karim expressed confidence the police would carry out thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (Aug 14): Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called for greater protection of national leaders and their families following the shocking assault on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son in Putrajaya yesterday. He said such incidents, though uncommon in Malaysia, must be taken seriously. 'I have also just read about what happened in Kuala Lumpur regarding Rafizi's child, who was alleged pulled by two people on a motorcycle and one of them had jabbed him with a syringe. 'Incidents like this are rare, which is why it is rather shocking, and I feel that the safety of leaders and their families should now be safeguarded as well if such things can happen,' he told reporters when met at a hotel here last night. Abdul Karim had attended the State Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea here, which was also graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin. He pointed out that only police investigations would be to determine the motive behind the attack, which took place as Rafizi's son was leaving a shopping mall with his mother. 'We do not know why this incident occurred. Possibly, there had been threats or something similar directed at Rafizi beforehand. 'But we hope that such incidents will not happen in Malaysia. They can cause feelings of fear and anxiety,' he said. Abdul Karim expressed confidence the police would carry out thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. 'I was rather shocked by what I read on social media, as such incidents are very rare. 'I hope the police will investigate, probe, and resolve this matter so that such feelings of fear can be eased,' he said. Police confirmed that Rafizi's son was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at 2pm at the mall's pick-up and drop-off area. 'The incident occurred when the victim was reportedly with his mother and their driver,' he told Bernama. Investigations are ongoing.
