Malaysia's leadership under PM Anwar strengthens ASEAN cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's leadership under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been a unique strength in bringing ASEAN leaders together to discuss and address regional issues collaboratively. ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) Malaysia chair Tan Sri Nazir Razak said that amid a sea change of leaders across ASEAN, Anwar seems very well connected with all of them. 'He (Anwar) is like the one person who's very close to all (ASEAN country leaders), and we look to that unique ability to bring them together so that we can close on some key decisions, such as bringing down non-tariff barriers, greater empowerment to the ASEAN Secretariat and policy changes. 'It can be done, but you need leaders, and sometimes they need to spend that political capital to get things done,' he said in a press conference at the ASEAN Business Forum 2025 Curtain Raiser here today. Nazir added that he is optimistic about ASEAN now, as the region currently has a new momentum. He said the external environment has given it more of a push, hence the ASEAN chairmanship is expected to produce many positive outcomes. According to a joint statement by the organisers, ASEAN Business Forum 2025, organised by CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd in collaboration with MBSB Bhd and OCBC Group, will be held at the St Regis Hotel on May 29 in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit 2025 and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit 2025. Co-hosted with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and ASEAN-BAC Malaysia, the forum is expected to draw more than 500 attendees, comprising over 200 foreign and local corporates, policymakers and corporate captains representing the region's largest companies of over RM1 trillion in market capitalisation. 'A key highlight of the forum is the corporate engagement and business exchange session designed to drive real business collaboration between pre-screened and pre-selected matching parties from the top 25 corporations and investors across ASEAN and China. 'It will also feature more than 20 speakers and panellists for discussions and closed-door meetings between investors and policy makers, all focused on addressing challenges and catalysing opportunities for high-value deals and strategic partnerships for regional economic growth,' it said.

Philippines Expects Timor-Leste's Membership To Be Among Issues Raised At 46th ASEAN Summit

Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs (Philippines), Ma. Theressa P. Lazaro, arrives at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today to attend the 46th ASEAN Summit 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). By Amanina Mohamad Yusof and Muhammad Adil Muzaffar Mohd Fisol SEPANG, May 23 (Bernama) -- The Philippines expects that discussions on the revitalisation of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the roadmap for Timor-Leste's full membership in ASEAN, and the conflict in Myanmar will be put forth during the upcoming 46th ASEAN Summit. Its Undersecretary of Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ma Theressa P. Lazaro, said the Philippines believes the summit would bring about progress towards admitting Timor-Leste into ASEAN, albeit acknowledging that ongoing technical issues remains a challenge to be addressed. 'I think there's just some technical problems along the way, and I think this is some kind of a deliverable by Malaysia for Timor-Leste. … (which is to) discuss fully on all the technicalities,' she told Bernama upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1. Timor-Leste has sought to join ASEAN since 2011, with the association assisting the country in meeting membership requirements. At the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits in November 2022, the regional bloc agreed in principle to admit Timor-Leste as its 11th member, contingent upon fulfilling the criteria outlined in the Full Membership Roadmap. Lazaro said her country also believes this summit would amplify the regional and Malaysia's active diplomatic role in resolving the ongoing armed and political conflict in Myanmar. 'I think definitely (the situation in) Myanmar is a very important issue, considering that your prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has been doing a lot of work on this matter, .. I think your special envoy is doing an excellent job too (on Myanmar matters),' she said.

Major road closures in Klang Valley ahead of ASEAN Summit 2025

by HIDAYATH HISHAM MULTIPLE highways and roads across the Klang Valley will be closed in stages from May 23 to 28 in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit 2025 in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the closures will affect six major highways and 25 main roads, particularly those leading to Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), hotels, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Subang Airport and Istana Negara. 'Full deployment will begin from May 23 to 26, 2025 and will involve staggered road closures and diversions across six highways and 25 main roads in the Klang Valley,' he said at a press conference on road closures during ASEAN Summit 2025 at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) KL today. Traffic control will begin 30 minutes before each scheduled convoy, with roadblocks and diversions enforced between 8am and 8pm daily during the summit period. Among the affected highways are the North–South Expressway Central Link North–South Expressway Central Link (ELITE Expressway), Maju Expressway (MEX), New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), KL-Seremban Expressway, North-South Expressway and Guthrie Corridor Expressway. (Graphics source: JSPT) Major city roads such as Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Parlimen will also be impacted. Specific closure times will be scheduled around VIP movements between hotels, KLCC, KLIA, Subang Airport and Istana Negara. A full dry-run involving motorcade rehearsals, venue security and pool duties will also be conducted on May 21 and 22. Mohd Yusri said a total of 789 personnel — including 55 senior officers and 734 rank-and-file officers — will be deployed throughout the summit. The public is advised to avoid restricted routes, use alternative roads to ease congestion, plan their journeys in advance, follow instructions from on-ground personnel and prioritise public transport including the light rail transit (LRT), mass rapid transit (MRT), monorail and buses. 'Close cooperation with other agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ), local authorities (PBT), the Public Works Ministry (KKR), the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and highway concessionaires is greatly hoped for to ensure smooth traffic management during this assignment,' he added.
