Tomstown Road closure: What you need to know about the detours

A section of Tomstown Road in Franklin County will close permanently May 14. According to an announcement from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the closure will occur between Route 997 and Washington Township Boulevard as part of an intersection improvement project at Route 997 and Route 2015. The project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety. When completed, Washington Township Boulevard will connect directly with Route 997. A detour will redirect traffic using Stottlemyer Road, Gehr Road and Washington Township Boulevard. The improvement project includes the construction of two new roundabouts on Route 997. One roundabout will be at the intersection of Route 2015, while the other will be located just north at the future intersection with Washington Township Boulevard. Additional work will involve roadway widening, installation of ADA curb ramps, drainage improvements, stormwater management and new lighting. Access to local businesses and residences will remain open throughout the construction period. Traffic on Route 997 will continue with single-lane flagging operations planned for brief intervals. Orchard Road and Washington Township Boulevard may also experience short detours during construction. Mitchell Knorr Contracting from Bloomsburg, PA, is managing the $6 million project. The anticipated completion date for all work is August 2027. PennDOT urging careful driving in work zones amid busy construction season

As construction season ramps up, PennDOT is advocating for drivers to be on the lookout for those orange and white traffic cones on the roads. And for you to be extra cautious while going through work zones. Nobody loves waiting in traffic when it slows down as you go through a work zone. But the consequences of not doing so are literally life and death. Spring is here and so is PennDOT construction season in NWPA Each year, there are estimated to be more than 1,400 work zone crashes throughout Pennsylvania. In 2024, 22 people were killed in those crashes, and many more were injured. And since 1970, 91 PennDOT employees have died in workzone-related incidents. If people obeyed work zone rules, that number could have been zero. 'As we all know, it just takes a split second for something to happen. Whether that's a piece of equipment backing out in front of you or a worker walking nearby on the side of the road. All it takes is one or two seconds there and that could cost somebody their life,' said Saxon Daugherty, safety officer for PennDOT District 1. Reflecting on the stellar career of legendary Erie DJ Mojo McKay 'We're just asking that they show extra caution, just like they were if they were the worker in the work zone, or their family members were in the work zone, we want them all to go home safely to their families at night,' he continued. When entering a work area, follow the posted speed limit, avoid any distractions, double your following distance, pay attention to all signs and flaggers, and be patient. Violations are taken seriously and even if you don't think police are around to catch you, many areas are photo-enforced. According to pennsylvania state police, if you're caught going just 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit in a work zone, you'll automatically lose your license for 15 days per state law. 'Just alone in the northwest corner, we've got 100 projects for our construction season in District 1. Multiply that across all of pennsylvania and that doesn't even include all of our maintenance workers that are out doing minor maintenance work across the summer. You're going to see a lot of work zones as you're out and about in the commonwealth. Just keep those things top of mind as you're traveling,' Daugherty went on to say. I-83 crash causes object to dangle over Harrisburg bridge

(WHTM) – A crash on I-83 has caused a traffic message board to dangle from the I-83 Bridge. abc27's Mallory Metzner was near the Dock Street Dam for a separate story when she heard a loud crash shortly after 5 p.m. That's when the message board, which warns drivers of traffic issues, was sent dangling from the bridge on the northbound side. According to 511PA the shoulder is closed at Exit 43: Capitol/2nd Street. First responders are on scene. This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week as construction ramps up during warm weather. 'The national campaign slogan this year is 'Respect the zone so we can all go home,'' said Luke Lazar, the Vice President of Risk and Safety at Flagger Force. 'What we asked the motorist to do are those four things that I identified: 'Pay attention, stay alert, slow down, move over, and eliminate distractions.'' This is a developing story. Bridge project on West Center Road in Conneaut Township to start next week

A $1.1 million project to replace the bridge that carries West Center Road over Paden Run in Conneaut Township, Crawford County, is scheduled to start next week. The bridge is located on West Center Road (Route 4004) just west of the intersection with Beaver Center Road (Route 4001). The project will include removal of the current steel bridge and construction of a new concrete structure. Work will also include waterproofing, minor asphalt paving near the bridge, as well as updates to the drainage and guiderail. Work is expected to begin Monday, weather permitting, and be complete in October. A detour will be required during construction and is expected to be in place for about four months. It will be posted using Beaver Center Road, Route 6 and Partch Road (Route 4006). The existing bridge was built in 1893. On average, about 230 vehicles a day use West Center Road. The bridge is rated in poor condition and is posted with an 18-ton weight restriction. The contractor is Thomas Construction Inc of Grove City. The contract cost is $1,118,080.72, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.
