Former director charged with improper use of company property
SEREMBAN: A former company director pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Thursday (June 5) to eight charges of improper use of company property, amounting to RM153,609 between 2019 and 2020. Chin Wei Choong, 42, made the plea after the charges were read out before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. In relation to four of the charges, he was accused as a director of Ambitious Supreme Sdn Bhd of having misused company property, involving RM8,829, RM32,710, RM60,000 and RM7,070, without the consent or ratification of the company's general meeting, thereby indirectly benefiting himself. It was for payments to several companies for work done for Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, a company with which he had an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd, from Nov 1, 2019, to Jan 10, 2020. He was also charged with four counts of committing a similar offence, involving RM10,000, RM10,000, RM15,000 and RM10,000 involving company property, to indirectly benefit him through a loan made to Tadika Universal Sdn Bhd, in which he has an interest, through Academy Adelphi Worldwide Hotels Sdn Bhd from Aug 6 to Oct 28, 2020. The offences were allegedly committed at a premises in Oakland Commerce Square here. The charges, framed under Section 218(1)(a) of the Companies Act 2016 and punishable under Section 218(2) of the same law, provide imprisonment for up to five years or a fine not exceeding RM3mil or both, if convicted. Chin was allowed bail of RM1,000 for each charge with one surety, and the court set July 31 for mention. Prosecuting officer Muhammad Akmal Azmi, from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Tan Zhi Xian represented Chin. – Bernama

1,319 army recruits to enjoy revised salary scheme

Army Chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said the recruits will receive a starting salary ranging from RM1,710 to RM1,930, depending on their academic qualifications, compared to RM1,610 during their training period. 'Previously, (under the Malaysian Remuneration System), their pay was RM1,459. This batch is the first to enjoy the new rates, where diploma holders will earn more than those with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). 'I hope this will encourage more participation from the community, especially diploma holders, to join the army,' he told reporters after the Passing Out Parade for Young Male Soldiers Series 202/2024 here. For this intake, Sarawak recorded the highest number of recruits with 243 individuals. By ethnicity, Malays formed the majority with 1,007 individuals, followed by Bumiputra from Sabah and Sarawak (364), Indians (18), Chinese (five) and Orang Asli (four). Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the army continues to carry out various efforts to boost participation from other ethnic groups, including organising exhibitions and career talks at vernacular schools and engaging Territorial Army Committee members in every state to promote participation among non-Malays. He noted that economic factors may be the main reason for the lack of interest among youth in joining the armed forces, and expressed hope that the implementation of the SSPA would help attract more of them, particularly from non-Malay backgrounds. 'We do not face many issues in Sabah. What we need is more participation from Peninsular Malaysia. I hope the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) will help encourage more youths to consider the armed forces as a career path,' he said.

Kunak Council records slightly higher revenue

KUNAK: The Kunak District Council (MDKNK) recorded a revenue of RM8,893,573 and total expenditure of RM8,748,710 last year. Kunak District Officer Majaran Osman, who is also MDKNK Chairman, said with a surplus of RM144,863, MDKNK needs to continue increasing momentum to ensure its development programmes and services are enhanced and providing more benefits to the people. Speaking at the Oath Taking Ceremony and Handover of Appointment Letters for the District Council members for the 2025-2027 term, he urged them to equip themselves with knowledge and understanding of the functions, roles and duties. 'The appointment of a District Council member is intended to assist the Local Authority (PBT) in making policies, planning and monitoring the implementation of development programmes. 'Council members are the frontline and therefore understand their roles and functions, in addition to upholding integrity, transparency and public accountability in an effort to bring about changes in the administration and management of the PBT,' said Majaran. MDKNK was established on June 1, 1994, indicating it has spanned over three decades, and demands that every action and plan in the district has a positive and viable impact. Currently, its rating area is 2.0639 square kilometres, while the total area of the Kunak district covers 27.5186 square kilometres. Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif is optimistic that those appointed as Council members can contribute ideas and energy for the development of the district in line with the 'Kunak must progress' mission. A total of 18 Council members were appointed and received their letters at the ceremony. Two of them were absent. Meanwhile, Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih urged the District Council members to be creative in their efforts to assist the (PBT in ensuring that the planning and development aspects implemented can provide effective services to the people. He said as appointed Council members, they have a significant trust and responsibility, which is to assist the PBT in planning, formulating policies and delivering the best services to the people. 'Council members need to play a more creative role in the planning and development of the PBT. Participate enthusiastically and consistently in any activities, especially in committee meetings as stipulated in the Standing Orders of the Kunak District Council. 'One of the duties of Council members is to ensure that the PBT's by-laws are used as the main basis and guide by the Council in resolving any problems faced,' he said in his speech text read by Norazlinah, who represented him. Isnin said as a link between the Government and the people through the PBT, Council members must carry out their roles and responsibilities with integrity and authority in decision-making, being trustworthy, transparent and fair in assisting the PBT in resolving issues involving the people. He also urged the Council members to put forward high-impact ideas, especially in the formulation of policies at the Kunak district level.
