Hup Seng cautious on 2H25 amid rising raw material costs

KUALA LUMPUR: Hup Seng Industries Bhd will maintain a cautious stance for the second half of 2025 amid continuing geopolitical uncertainties. The food and beverage company noted that key raw materials costs remained sensitive to supply and regulatory developments, with upward price pressures anticipated 'Nevertheless, the group will continue to focus on operational efficiency to help mitigate the impact of rising costs and will closely monitor market conditions to remain competitive and sustain stable performance,' Hup Seng said. In the second quarter ended June 30, Hup Seng's net profit fell 5.7% to RM8.5mil, or earnings per share of 1.06 sen compared with RM9.03mil, or 1.13 sen in the year-ago quarter. The lower profit was primarily due to an increase in certain raw material costs, which offset the positive impact of higher sales. Revenue, however, rose 5.7% to RM84.8mil against RM80.2mil achieved a year ago. Hup Seng said its domestic sales increased by 9%, or RM5.5mil, compared to the previous corresponding period, driven mainly by growth in East Malaysia as well as wholesale, supermarket, and hypermarket channels. However, this gain was partially offset by a 5% decline in export sales, amounting to RM900,000, primarily from Indonesia and Myanmar. In the first six months, it posted a net profit of RM19.1mil, down 16.9% from RM23mil while revenue rose to RM176.6mil against RM173.8mil a year prior. The board of directors has recommended a first interim single-tier dividend of 2 sen per ordinary share for the financial quarter ending Dec 31, 2025. The entitlement date will be announced later.

RTD probes red-light offenders caught on video near Alor Star school

ALOR STAR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is investigating a video circulating online that shows several vehicles running a red light at a three-way junction in front of a school along Jalan Sultanah. The 32-second clip depicts at least a dozen motorists ignoring the red signal, which had been activated in all lanes to allow schoolchildren to cross. Some drivers were also seen travelling against the flow of traffic to beat the light. The area, which has four schools in close proximity, is known to be heavily congested during the morning school run. Kedah RTD director Stien Van Lutam confirmed that the department was aware of the incident. "We will investigate and take action if there are any violations," he said when contacted. He also reminded motorists to obey traffic rules at all times. "Running a red light is an offence under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which requires drivers to comply with traffic signals, including red lights. The offence carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, for first-time offenders. "It is also a compoundable offence with a mandatory RM300 fine," he added.

Two charged over RM13.45mil untaxed cigarettes seized in Sepang

SEPANG: Two men have been charged after police seized 566 cases of untaxed cigarettes worth about RM13.45 million here on Aug 3. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities intercepted a bonded lorry at the Putrajaya toll of the Maju Expressway (MEX) in Cyberjaya that day. He said the operation, carried out about 2.30pm, involved policemen from Bukit Aman's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation and the Sepang police Criminal Investigation Department. He said an inspection of the lorry led to the discovery of various brands of illicit cigarettes, adding that the driver and co-driver of the vehicle, aged 35 and 38, were subsequently detained. Other items seized included the lorry, its ignition key, two mobile phones and four delivery order documents. Shazeli said checks revealed that both suspects have prior criminal and drug abuse records. "The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine of not less than 10 times the customs duty or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or imprisonment of between six months and five years, or both, upon conviction," he said. On Aug 7, both men were charged at the Sepang magistrate's court under the same section. Shazeli reminded the public not to get involved in any smuggling or sale of illicit cigarettes, adding that stern action will be taken against offenders. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the police to safeguard national revenue, public safety and security.
