Ruchi Gujjar's tribute to PM Modi at Cannes 2025 faces backlash, ‘No true Rajput would ever…'
Ruchi Gujjar, an emerging model and actor, wore traditional Kundan jewellery draped in gold as she walked the Cannes 2025 red carpet in a full wedding look. However, Minister Narendra Modi received a particular shoutout in her avatar. What caught everyone's attention was Ruchi Gujjar's elaborate necklace along with a traditional deep neckline. The lockets had PM Modi's image, which became the highlight of her bold fashion statement. Wearing a gold lehenga designed by Roopa Sharmaa, her outfit included gotta patti and mirror embroidery. She also wore a custom necklace with pictures of PM Modi surrounded by red enamel lotuses, pearls and Kundan. The remainder of the attire featured zardozi embroidery, a lehenga that would be appropriate for a Rajasthani wedding. Her dress had an all-gold, heavily decorated, mirror-worked colour scheme. The 78th annual Cannes Film Festival started on May 13 and would conclude on May 24. On Day 8 of the prestigious film festival, the former Miss Haryana made the statement. After winning the title of Miss Haryana 2023, Gujjar swiftly turned to acting and modelling. She is now charting her own path in the entertainment industry. A graduate of Maharani College in Jaipur, she abandoned the Pink City for the bright spotlights and movie sets of Mumbai. She has a growing fan following after being well-known in the music video industry and appearing in songs like "Heli Mein Chor" and "Jab Tu Meri Na Rahi". Social media users gave negative reactions to Ruchi Gujjar's Cannes 2025 look. Some of them found it inappropriate to pay a tribute to PM Modi while wearing a revealing dress. One user wrote, 'The placements of Modi badges is dangerous.' 'Feeling sad for Modi-ji. He will be devastated after watching this,' wrote another. 'You went to represent the nation or to make all of us embarrassed?' wrote one user. 'I'm from Rajasthan and this is OFFENSIVE at best. Good job in maligning the cultural fabric of my state for a red-carpet gimmick. And, the monstrous neckpiece with the PM's face on it? Grotesque,' commented another. 'Who the hell is she, and why she's invited at Cannes with such sad couture to represent India?' wrote another. 'Which state's heritage is this? She has written Rajasthan in the caption. Have you ever seen any Rajput woman wearing something like this? In their traditional attire, not even a corner of their body is visible, and here she is displaying her body. No true Rajput would ever call this cheap display their culture,' commented another user.

In Saint Laurent, Bella Hadid Teases The New Dress Code At Cannes
CANNES, FRANCE – MAY 13: Bella Hadid attends the red carpet for the opening ceremony and 'Partir Un Jour' (Leave One Day) screening at the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 13, 2025 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage) The Cannes Film Festival is officially underway, with stars finally hitting the red carpet following a last-minute brow-raising dress code change. With this year's ban on nudity, voluminous dresses and dramatic trains, an uptick in curiosity over the incoming looks can be expected. Fortunately, it seems the new rules are yet to affect the sartorial prowess we have all come to expect at the iconic festival year after year. At Cannes, fashion rules have oft been broken, and nude moments have long been toed if not embraced. It seems this year was no different, with a few rebels among the crowd at the Croisette. Though skin-baring and traffic-stopping gowns aside, there were show-stopping looks abound. A crowd favourite at the festival, Bella Hadid returned to the opening ceremony this year in a black custom Saint Laurent gown. While the model is no stranger to a nearly nude look, with her sheer dress last year grabbing headlines, this year she skirted around the concept, with a thigh high slit and low back on the silk number. Complimenting the look were strappy Saint Laurent heels and Chopard jewels. To top it all off, she showed off her new warm-blonde locks in a side part. Fellow model Heidi Klum attended the festival in a large floral Elie Saab gown with a dramatic fluttering train—despite large trains being banned this year, it seems the festival isn't enforcing this rule too heavily. The stunning floral illusion gown also featured a leg baring slit and was worn with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Halle Berry, actress and a member of the festival jury this year, appeared on the red carpet in a chic Jacquemus black and white striped number. However, it turns out the high-neck gown was not her first pick. 'I had an amazing dress by [Gaurav] Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it's too big of a train,' Berry explained to Variety . 'I'm not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule.' This statement comes not too long after Berry's own sparkling, nearly-nude look on the Met Gala red carpet this year.
