HK Express to launch daily Hong Kong-Subang flights from Aug 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Cathay Pacific Group's low-cost airline subsidiary HK Express Airways will begin daily flight services from Hong Kong to Subang's Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SAAS) from Aug 1. The airline said Subang is its second Malaysian destination after Penang, where it already operates direct flights. "SAAS allows passengers to reach the Kuala Lumpur city centre in just 30 minutes after clearing customs, making it incredibly convenient for visiting iconic attractions like the Petronas Twin Towers and Bukit Bintang, while also discovering other local Malaysian gems," HK Express said in a statement. HK Express operates all-Airbus fleet comprising of A320-200, A320neo (new engine option), A321 and A321neo in an all-economy class layout. Besides Malaysia, the airline also flies to the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, China and Japan. SAAS, widely known as Subang Airport, was Kuala Lumpur's main airport before Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) opened in 1998. Jet operations resumed at the airport in August 2024 after more than two decades following the announcement of the Subang Airport Regeneration Plan (SARP) upgrades. Transport Minister Anthony Loke had previously said that the jet operations at Subang are part of an interim phase of the SARP, ahead of a new terminal development slated to begin within the next three years. He said the interim period, expected to last two to three years, will help assess operational efficiency before construction begins on a new terminal to expand Subang Airport's capacity as a city airport. "The interim preparations and operations are important to see how well our operations can run smoothly," Loke said at a press conference after a walkabout at the upgraded Subang Airport in July 2024. Other airlines operating narrow-body airplanes out of Subang Airport include Firefly, Batik Air Malaysia, Scoot and TransNusa.

New Bali route opens up for Aussies

A major Asian airline has just launched another direct route to Bali, giving Aussie travellers more options to pursue their holiday dreams in Indonesia's island paradise. Indonesia AirAsia, a budget carrier associated with the popular Malaysian brand, touched down at Adelaide Airport on Thursday to mark the new direct Adelaide-Denpasar route. The carrier will operate four flights a week from Adelaide using a 180-seat A320-200 aircraft. It will fly into Adelaide every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and depart every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, providing more than 74,000 seats per year through Adelaide. Indonesia AirAsia also uses Bali as a transit hub, which means Aussies can connect through Denpasar to more than 130 other destinations across Asia. It also opens up South Australia to more Indonesian travellers. The massive Southeast Asian nation injected $49m into the state's visitor economy in 2024, an 18 per cent lift from 2023. Indonesia's Ambassador to Australia Siswo Pramono said the new route would foster 'broader exchanges in tourism, education, economy and people-to-people relations'. Indonesia AirAsia is now running a direct Adelaide to Bali route. Escape Credit: Supplied 'This is more than just the addition of a new route, it is also a meaningful step towards strengthening connectivity between Indonesia and Australia, particularly in the southern region,' he said on Thursday. 'It also holds great significance for Indonesians living in South Australia, providing them with easier access to reconnect with their families and homeland. 'This is diplomacy in its most tangible form by bringing our nations closer not only through policy but also through shared experiences, human connections and cultural ties.' Indonesia AirAsia acting chief executive Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, meanwhile, said the new route opened up immediate access to all the splendours of Asian tourism. 'We are excited to introduce Adelaide as a new destination for the millions of guests across the AirAsia network while offering South Australians seamless access to many of their favourite destinations across Asia, including Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, and Phuket via our FlyThru service,' he said. 'Travellers can also take advantage of onward connections beyond Bali to explore other remarkable parts of Indonesia, such as Jakarta, the bustling capital, or Labuan Bajo, home to the iconic Komodo National Park.'. More and more international carriers are launching routes in Adelaide. Earlier this month, Air New Zealand announced it would starting running direct flights from Adelaide to Christchurch on the country's South Island from October. From December, US carrier United Airlines will provide direct flights between San Francisco and Adelaide three times a week until March. Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said the new routes would boost the state's economy. 'These direct international flights to Adelaide add to the record number of international airlines connecting the world to our state, all helping grow our international market, which is currently worth a record $1.3bn to our state,' she said.

Uganda Airlines launches direct flights to London

Uganda Airlines will launch direct flights from Entebbe to London Gatwick on May 18, cutting travel time to nine hours and re-establishing a long-lost route. This will be the airline's first European route as it expands beyond Africa, marking a major milestone since British Airways abandoned the route in July 2015, claiming it was not 'commercially viable'. The Ugandan national carrier hopes the flights will boost trade, with faster access to the UK benefitting Ugandan exporters of coffee, tea and fresh produce, while attracting more tourists.'This accessibility is expected to increase tourist arrivals, generate employment opportunities, and contribute to our gross domestic product,' the Transport Minister Katumba Wamala said. Mr Wamala added that they expect lower air fares on the route. 'Where there's no competition, prices soar. Uganda Airlines will moderate the market,' he said. The airline, which was revived five years ago, has focused on African routes but is now expanding globally. London will be its third long-haul destination after Dubai and Mumbai, with plans to add Beijing soon. With 77 weekly departures from Entebbe, Uganda Airlines is the airport's biggest operator. Flights to London will bring the total to 81. Its fleet consists of three Airbus aircraft – A320-200, A330-800 and A320-800 and four CRJ-900s. The airline's CEO, Jennifer Bamuturaki, says the expansion strengthens Uganda's global aviation presence and national development goals.'Because of the potential they unlock, these air bridges are essential planks in the National Development Plan and Uganda's Vision 2040 strategy. Besides shortening travel times for our passengers, this route also provides a more efficient route for exporters of fresh products to the United Kingdom.' © Copyright 2022 Nation Media Group.
