Gene Hackman Case: Betsy Arakawa Had Fluid In Her Lungs Before Death
Originally appeared on E! Online More details have come to light about Betsy Arakawa's health in the time leading up to her death. After Gene Hackman and his wife of 33 years were found dead inside their Santa Fe home, authorities found that Arakawa had fluid in her lungs, according to her autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press. The report, released April 29, showed that the 65-year-old had fluid accumulated in her chest, as well as mild hardening of the vessels that supply blood to the heart and body, per the outlet. The documents confirmed that she tested negative for COVID and the flu, her carbon monoxide levels were within a normal range and she showed no signs of trauma. Arakawa's cause of death was found to be hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a respiratory illness that is transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents—the documents confirmed. Previously, officials had found evidence of dead and live rodents across eight buildings on their sprawling property, according to Department of Public Health records, per CNN. More from E! After Arakawa's death, Hackman, 95, died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor, according to a postmortem examination from the Office of the Medical Investigator obtained by NBC News. After their bodies were discovered, the couple's loved ones shared that they believe Arakawa, who was also Hackman's caretaker, likely didn't realize how sick she was. After all, only 122 cases of hantavirus were reported in New Mexico from 1993 to 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help," Stephen Marshall speculated in the Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special documentary. "She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene." Indeed, the couple's friends emphasized that Arakawa and Hackman, who wed in 1991, had a romance made for the silver screen. "He was a gentle giant, very calm," Kevin Bobolosky said of Hackman in the special. "Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. So they had everything they wanted." For a closer look at Hackman and Arakawa's deaths, keep reading. (E! and NBC News are part of the NBCUniversal family.) Gene Hackman Investigation: Dead Rodents, Nests Found on Property
Originally appeared on E! Online More has come to light about Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's residence. After the French Connection star and his wife of 33 years were found dead along with one of their dogs in their Santa Fe home in February, authorities revealed the state of their sprawling property in New Mexico Department of Public Health records obtained by CNN. The March 5 assessment—which was conducted to ensure the safety of investigators, first responders and others with access to the property—found dead and alive rodents, as well as rodent nests, in three detached garages. Officials also discovered rodent feces in three garages, two casitas and three sheds, per the outlet. While the eight buildings on the premises were accessible to the rodents, including two vehicles on the property, the documents noted that the couple's primary residence didn't show any signs of rodent activity and was deemed clean by the department. The assessment was essential as Arakawa, 65, had died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a respiratory illness that is transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents—Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed in a press conference. Following their deaths, friends of the couple speculated that Arakawa, who was also Hackman's caretaker, likely didn't know how sick she was since the illness is so rare. "I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help," Stephen Marshall said in the Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special documentary. "She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene." While Arakawa, a classically trained pianist, was Hackman's biggest supporter, the feelings were mutual, according to their loved ones. "Betsy was just a lovely and charming woman," Marshall recalled. "She had been with Gene since she was pretty young. He was very proud of her accomplishments. She had played with the Honolulu Philharmonic Orchestra." Meanwhile, their pal Kevin Bobolosky shared a glimpse into the couple's sweet dynamic at home. "He was a gentle giant, very calm," he said of Hackman. "Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. Gene Hackman's Publicist Details His Private Final Years
Originally appeared on E! Online spent his final years surrounded by peace and love. More than a month after The French Connection star and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their New Mexico home alongside one of their dogs, the actor's publicist Susan Madore shared a glimpse into how he spent his final years. During the 27 years of working for the legendary actor, Susan saw him move to Santa Fe in the '90s to lead 'an artistic life' outside of the spotlight. Indeed, he even went as far as buying a plot of land next to a garbage dump to go on peaceful bike rides without any disturbances. 'He wanted the privacy of being able to ride his bike without anyone following him or observing him,' Susan said during a March 31 hearing over the public release of investigative records into his death, per Rolling Stone, adding that Betsy had called her personally after the real estate purchase because, 'she wanted me to be aware if anyone called asking why Mr. Hackman lived at the dump.' More from E! But in moving his priorities away from the Hollywood lights, the Unforgivenstar had more time to spend with his friends and his wife of over 30 years. And some of those friends have since shared insight into the late couple's loving marriage. "He was a gentle giant, very calm,' Kevin Bobolosky said of Gene in the March 18 documentary Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special. 'Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. So they had everything they wanted." Following their deaths, Santa Fe Sheriff Adam Mendoza stated that Betsy's official cause of death at 65 was hantavirus—a pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents. One week after her death, the cause of Gene's death at 95 was ruled as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer's disease being a contributing factor. But according to the couple's friends, it was likely that Betsy, who was Gene's main caretaker, was not aware of how severe her illness was. 'I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help,' their pal Stephen Marshall said in the documentary. 'She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene.' Indeed, it was apparent to many just how much Betsy cared for the Hoosiers actor. 'She was very protective of him,' Gene's friend Tim Allin told The New York Times last month, adding that Gene often said that without Betsy, he likely would've died 'long ago.'
