spent his final years surrounded by peace and love.
More than a month after The French Connection star and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their New Mexico home alongside one of their dogs, the actor's publicist Susan Madore shared a glimpse into how he spent his final years.
During the 27 years of working for the legendary actor, Susan saw him move to Santa Fe in the '90s to lead 'an artistic life' outside of the spotlight. Indeed, he even went as far as buying a plot of land next to a garbage dump to go on peaceful bike rides without any disturbances.
'He wanted the privacy of being able to ride his bike without anyone following him or observing him,' Susan said during a March 31 hearing over the public release of investigative records into his death, per Rolling Stone, adding that Betsy had called her personally after the real estate purchase because, 'she wanted me to be aware if anyone called asking why Mr. Hackman lived at the dump.'

And beyond having a serene escape, Susan also recalled that Gene would only agree to two hours of publicity for each film he was involved in. But in moving his priorities away from the Hollywood lights, the Unforgivenstar had more time to spend with his friends and his wife of over 30 years. And some of those friends have since shared insight into the late couple's loving marriage.
"He was a gentle giant, very calm,' Kevin Bobolosky said of Gene in the March 18 documentary Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special. 'Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. So they had everything they wanted."
Following their deaths, Santa Fe Sheriff Adam Mendoza stated that Betsy's official cause of death at 65 was hantavirus—a pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents.
One week after her death, the cause of Gene's death at 95 was ruled as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer's disease being a contributing factor.
But according to the couple's friends, it was likely that Betsy, who was Gene's main caretaker, was not aware of how severe her illness was.
'I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help,' their pal Stephen Marshall said in the documentary. 'She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene.'
Indeed, it was apparent to many just how much Betsy cared for the Hoosiers actor.
'She was very protective of him,' Gene's friend Tim Allin told The New York Times last month, adding that Gene often said that without Betsy, he likely would've died 'long ago.'

Tom Cruise's Awkward Answer About Father's Day Sparks Questions About His Relationship With Daughter Suri

Tom Cruise's personal life has been shrouded in mystery, from his dating life to his bond with his kids. Everyone has questions about his relationship with his and Katie Holmes' daughter Suri Cruise, and now, more than ever, people want answers. In case you missed it, earlier this week, an E! News journalist asked Tom: 'Father's Day is just around the corner. What would an ideal Father's Day look like for you?' And his response has people talking. More from SheKnows Tom Cruise's Second Act Keeps Getting Derailed by Scientology In a truly awkward turn of events, Tom responded by saying, 'You know…' before trailing off and shaking his head while looking into the distance. He added, 'Just having fun, man. Making movies, big adventure, having a good time.' Welp, how vague. You can see the proof for yourself in the video they posted HERE! Now, YouTube users instantly commented on this awkward moment, calling out Tom for his reported estrangement. One user said, 'A simple question about Father's Day and he can't answer it. He has gotten to a point where all he can talk about is movies and his love of movies. What about being a parent, Tom? There was a time when that was important to you. Sad for this man.' 'Wow kudos for the interviewer for finding a way to approach his father controversies, usually his questions are pre screened,' another added. '…I wish more interviewers could confront this sleazy guy about the unethical things surrounding him.' While Holmes and Tom have never publicly commented on whether he is, in fact, estranged from Suri, it's widely reported on, and insiders have even spilled the beans about it. Former leading Scientologist Karen De La Carriere previously told DailyMail that while many think that there are a lot of rules that prohibit Cruise from seeing Suri, it's just one major rule that she believes to be the case. 'Katie was deemed a Suppressive Person and Suri, by extension, a Potential Trouble Source,' she said. Chances are, you've heard about Scientology referring to some outsiders as a 'Suppressive Person,' which basically means someone who does suppressive acts against the Church and is dubbed an enemy for it. A Potential Trouble Source is basically a step below a Suppressive Person, it's basically someone linked to a Suppressive Person who may indicate they'll be an enemt ot the Church as well. This was backed up when DailyMail also asked Cruise's former security detail, Brendan Tighe, about it. 'So long as Suri sides with her mom, there will be no contact with her dad,' he said. 'But what about his two kids with Nicole Kidman (another ex of his who left the Church and became a Suppressive Person)?' Well, the reason he talks to his adopted children, that he shares with ex-wife Kidman, is that they're both Scientologists (with his daughter Bella as a high-ranking one at that). For those who don't know, Tom has three children in total. He and Kidman, with whom he was married to from 1990 to 2001, adopted two children: Isabella Jane 'Bella' Cruise and Connor Antony Cruise. Then, he and his ex-wife Holmes welcomed Suri on April 18, 2006, and they were married from 2006 to of SheKnows Every Single Time Shemar Moore Proved He's the Proudest First-Time Girl Dad The Best Places to Buy Furniture for Teens Online The Most Striking Rare Boy Names in the U.S. Right Now — & the Reason You Haven't Heard Them (Yet)

New Doc Explores How Julia Sweeney's ‘SNL' Favorite Pat Became a Complex Nonbinary Icon

Julia Sweeney's popular Saturday Night Live character Pat gets their plaudits (and some criticism) as a gender non-conforming pioneer in a new clip from the upcoming documentary, We Are Pat, premiering exclusively on Rolling Stone. Sweeney played Pat throughout her run on SNL in the early Nineties and even got to star in a spin-off film, It's Pat. The inscrutability of Pat's androgyny was pushed to comedic extremes, effectively offering prominent, yet thorny representation for gender non-conforming people on television long before the term 'nonbinary' was being widely used. 'Why am I laughing at something that's meant to laugh at me? Why do I love Pat? Is Pat a nonbinary icon or a transphobic trope of yesteryear?' Haber continues. 'In exploring these questions, it was really important that the film embraced a spirit of curiosity and conversation rather than cancel culture and judgment.' The new clip opens with Karam Ann, a professor of TV studies, noting the prescience of Pat and how the relatively new discussion around nonbinary identity and the use of they/them pronouns has 'reanimated Pat from the grave.' Actor and filmmaker River Gallo, who is nonbinary, adds, 'What's interesting to me about being nonbinary, and the definition of nonbinariness, is it's saying you're not these two things. It's not really definable but only by what it isn't. It's interesting thinking of Pat in those ways.' We Are Pat will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 8. It's set to feature interviews with an array of queer and trans comedians and writers, including Molly Kearney, Esther Fallick, Abby McEnany, Pink Foxx, and Roz Hernandez. Sweeney also partook in the film, as did her SNL co-star Kevin Nealon. Haber says one of the most profound things they learned while making the film was from Sweeney, who created Pat while grappling with her 'own gendered pressure as a woman trying to make it in the Ninetes boys club of comedy and SNL.' 'Pat grew out of familial and societal expectations of femininity that were placed on Julia during that time, and Pat was something of an escape for her,' Haber says. 'In the film, she says, 'It was actually a joy to be Pat because I got to have a break from having to be a girl too.' That sense of reacting to a gender expectation placed on you felt really relatable to the comics in the film and me.' { pmcCnx({ settings: { plugins: { pmcAtlasMG: { iabPlcmt: 1, }, pmcCnx: { singleAutoPlay: 'auto' } } }, playerId: "d762a038-c1a2-4e6c-969e-b2f1c9ec6f8a", mediaId: "4665abb0-57e9-4e09-a93a-fa846cda00cb", }).render("connatix_player_4665abb0-57e9-4e09-a93a-fa846cda00cb_2"); }); Best of Rolling Stone The 50 Best 'Saturday Night Live' Characters of All Time Denzel Washington's Movies Ranked, From Worst to Best 70 Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century

USC's SoCal VoCals Are Pitch Perfect in ‘Just Sing' Documentary Trailer

For the University of Southern California's reigning a cappella group the SoCal VoCals, it isn't enough to just be pitch perfect. In the official trailer for the documentary Just Sing, directors Angelique Molina and Abraham Troen follow the group as they balance pressure and passion ahead of their final pre-graduation test at New York's International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. The documentary will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2025 on June 6. 'One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding a cappella is that it's kind of Glee-esque, but it's so much more than that,' one student said in the clip. Another added: 'I think when I realized there was a whole group of people that, like, that was their nerd, I was like, 'Those are my people.'' It brought an element of cool to these competitions, but didn't diminish what it meant to the people competing. More than 600 groups and 12,000 students compete in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, often referred to as the 'Super Bowl of song.' 'It has the potential to really transform someone's life,' one student said. 'For two years, we were immersed in the lives of our protagonists, embedded not only in the world of the SoCal VoCals but also within the broader realm of collegiate a cappella,' Molina and Troen shared in a statement via FilmFreeway. 'What might have seemed like a typical narrative of a prestigious a cappella group striving for a highly coveted trophy instead unfolded into a deeply personal exploration of young people navigating universal themes of identity, belonging, and self-expression. Through their shared passion for music, each member embarks on their own journey of self-discovery, ultimately finding and defining their own voice.' In the trailer, the SoCal VoCals can be heard running through Lady Gaga's 'The Edge of Glory' and Bob Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' Elsewhere in the film, the group performs tracks from Adele, Beyonce, Rosalía, Jon Batiste, Diana Ross, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift. Just Sing was produced by Sarah Thomson and John Battsek.
